There is growing concern that scholarly output may be swamping traditional mechanisms for both pre-publication filtering (e.g peer review) and post-publication impact filtering (e.g. the Journal Impact Factor). Increasing scholarly use of Web2.0 tools like CiteULike, Mendeley, Twitter, and blog-style article commenting presents an opportunity to create new filters. Metrics based on a diverse set of social sources could yield broader, richer, and more timely assessments of current and potential scholarly impact. Realizing this, many authors have begun to call for investigation of these “altmetrics” [2]. Despite the growing speculation and early exploratory investigation into the value of altmetrics, however, there remains little concrete research into the properties of these metrics: their validity, their potential value and flaws, and their relationship to established measures. Nor has there been any large umbrella to bring these multiple perspectives together. The altmetrics11 workshop aims to encourage both these. Submissions are invited from a variety of areas: * New metrics based on social media * Tracking science communication on the Web * Relation between traditional metrics and altmetrics * Peer-review and altmetrics * Tools for gathering, analyzing, disseminating altmetrics Important Dates: 2-page abstracts due March 31, 2011 Acceptance and abstract publication April 14, 2011 Open pre-workshop discussion April 14, 2011 – June 14, 2011Workshop at WebSci 11 June 14 – June 15, 2011 Discussion closed June 30, 2011 Invitations for post-workshop proceedings TBA Submissions: Prospective authors should submit 2-page extended abstracts (max. 1000 words, not including references). If necessary, the workshop organizers will select the most relevant, original, and significant abstracts for presentation. Experimental results will be given preference, followed by technical reports on working altmetrics tools and position papers. All selected submissions will be published online for open peer review and discussion. Authors are encouraged to participate in the discussions of their work. Based on the presentations and online discussion, selected authors may be asked to submit full papers for peer-reviewed proceedings. Hi all especially those who are from New Zealand, We recently developed a social platform - www.floodaid.com.au - during the floods in Queensland, Australia to connect those who can help with those who need help. The platform connected (and is still connecting) thousands of victims with what they needed. In light of the recent earthquake in New Zealand, we created a similar platform, hoping that it would be useful for those affected by the earthquake in Christchurch - www.quakeaid.co.nz . Academic replacements for TwapperKeeper.com?

*Note:* I've also blogged this (in case links in the post don't work) and will list all alternatives suggested to me in that blog post: http://blog.ynada.com/616 Dear all, A few days ago, the people behind Twitter archival site TwapperKeeper.com<http://twapperkeeper.com/> announced that they will be discontinuing the export feature of the service on March 20, 2011<http://twapperkeeper.wordpress.com/2011/02/22/removal-of-export-and-downloa…>. Apparently the feature is in violation of Twitter’s terms of service, at least in the form it’s currently implemented in TwapperKeeper. Unfortunately this cuts off a number of academics who are investigating communication on Twitter for scientific purposes from a convenient data source. While it’s fairly easy to get data directly via the Twitter API<http://apiwiki.twitter.com/> (which is what TwapperKeeper was doing), I know many people who want to concentrate on the data itself, rather than running their own servers to scrape Twitter on a regular basis. What’s more is that Twitter’s attitude is worrisome: many of us have tried to get an exemption from API rate limits in the past, to no avail. Twitter doesn’t give researchers privileged access to their data, and now they’re crippling TwapperKeeper on top of that. Bottom line: what will we use after March 20? Ideally, a replacement would provide the following: - the hashtag/search query functionality of TwapperKeeper, - the export functionality of TwapperKeeper, - exclusive use for academic purposes (on the grounds that this might keep Twitter from shutting it down), - stability and reliability, - long-term viability. The last point is important, because I don’t think it will be difficult to set up a server somewhere to suit the needs of a few people, but a larger-scale solution seems more sensible in the long run. Maybe JISC<http://www.jisc.ac.uk/> can do something like that, based onyourTwapperKeeper<http://code.google.com/p/yourtwapperkeeper/> (which they supported<http://twapperkeeper.wordpress.com/2010/04/16/jisc-funded-developments-to-t…>)? Or one of the big institutes (OII, Berkman)? Thanks for the information about 140kit.com, I will definitely check it out. I'm still wondering whether a more permanent solution can be found (funding drying up in May doesn't sound too promising). I have a simple BASh/cronjob-solution scripts to pull data from the API in regular intervals, perhaps I should just go with that. @Deen: you won't get whitelisted unless Twitter have changed their policy. I've been turned down twice on the grounds that there is whitelisting for applications only, not for academic research. I've used both TwapperKeeper and 140kit, and found that the latter is quite good for hashtag archiving, but not as good at keyword archiving. Further, 140kit has a max scrape time of one week, although that is manually renewable I believe. Finally, both TK and 140kit can be quite slow and even unavailable at times, and as we've just seen they may shut down at any time. All of this has made me quite wary of relying on externally managed "clouds" for data collection. That is why I intend to set up my own Twitter harvesting operation for use within my own department, as many CS researchers do, and would encourage others with the necessary means and knowledge to do the same. Much valuable data can be collected even within the default API query limits, though I'll certainly ask Twitter to put me on the whitelist. Running one's own archiving operation is fairly cheap, and since you're only archiving your own data, you aren't hamstrung by hundreds of other jobs running simultaneously. If there's any interest in learning how to set up small-scale Twitter scrapes, let me know and I'll write something up when I have the time. While conceptually very simple, the linked data model is a significant departure from our current models that are based on records and database technologies. We'll cover the underlying entity-relationship structure, "triples" and "statements," the importance of identifiers and vocabularies. In addition, we will look briefly at the functionality that this model supports and the user benefits that come with it. This webinar will describe some of the basic data and software standards, as well as demonstrate implementations such as existing registries and vocabularies. Some of the issues for discussion will be data and vocabulary maintenance, the question of data provenance, and techniques for metadata extension. We will briefly explore some current linked data activities in cultural heritage organizations. Speaker: Karen Coyle Karen Coyle is a librarian with over thirty years of experience with library technology. She now consults in a variety of areas relating to digital libraries. Karen has published dozens of articles and reports, most available on her web site, kcoyle.net. She has served on standards committees including the MARC standards group (MARBI), NISO committee AX for the OpenURL standard, and was an ALA representative to the e-book standards development that led to the ePub standard. She follows, writes, and speaks on a wide range policy areas, including intellectual property, privacy, and public access to information. Final Reminder: Call for Papers and Book Reviews - Deadline: March 15, 2011 Methodological approaches to the study of virtual environments and online social networks The Graduate Journal of Social Science (GJSS) announces a Call for Papers and Book Reviews for a special issue dealing with methodological approaches to the study of virtual environments and online social networks. The journal encourages the submission of work by MSc/ MA/MS, MPhil, PhD students and junior academics from all geographic regions. All papers are submitted to a blind peer review process. The special issue is scheduled for December 2011. Papers: The proliferation of virtual worlds such as The Sims, Second Life, World of Warcraft and of online social networks such as blogs or social networking applications (Facebook, LinkedIn, Hi5) has been met with an enthusiastic interest from researchers across disciplines. Scholars in anthropology, communication and cultural studies, economics, education, psychology and sociology have become increasingly involved in the study of such environments, bringing along not only discipline-specific questions and theories, but also various methodological approaches. This special issue aims at mapping some of the methodological approaches to the study of virtual environments, and welcomes both theoretical and empirical analyses that address them. The interest here is in what methods graduate researchers choose to use, the problems they face in trying to use them and the ways in which these methods are being adapted in relation to these virtual sites of study. Graduate students doing empirical work on virtual worlds and online social networks from all disciplines are strongly encouraged to submit papers dealing with the processes of choosing, applying and critically evaluating their methods. While we expect contributions to vary according to the particular focus of investigation, questions such as the following may be relevant: What are the advantages and disadvantages of these methods? Are such methods developed specifically for the study of virtual worlds and/or online social networks, or are they adaptations of traditional research methods in social sciences? Are there specific disciplines, theories, or academic frameworks that offer more suitable insights regarding such methods- or can using them suggest limiting the scope of this new research environment? Authors are encouraged to submit papers addressing questions such as: - How to choose a suitable method for the study of virtual worlds and/ or online social networks? - Methods for exploring the social and cultural aspects of virtual worlds and/ or online social networks. - Methods for exploring the technical aspects of virtual worlds and/ or online social networks. - Criteria for evaluating research on virtual worlds and/ or online social networks. - Simulations as research methods: problems, recommendations, evaluation. - Methods for collaborative research in virtual environments and/ or online social networks. - Ethical issues. - Immersion: do we need to be users of virtual worlds/ online social networks to study them? All papers must be submitted electronically by March 15, 2011 to <dddumitr(a)ucalgary.ca>. Articles should be between 5,000 - 8,000 words in length (including footnotes but excluding references). Short essays (2,000 - 3,000 words) and book reviews on this topic are also welcome.
