scope conditions
by Barry Wellman 14 Mar '11

14 Mar '11

I've encountered 1 or 2 items on this -- and some in the past -- that request course reading, but don't give scope conditions. What university? What discipline? What course? What's the ability and experience level of the students? What is their quantitative or qualitative analysis background? It's hard to suggest readings -- books or articles -- without such basic information. In at least one case, I couldn't even tell the counry from which the requester was writing. CFP: KEY 2011, Cardiff University, May 23-24
by Lise Fontaine 14 Mar '11

14 Mar '11

Please find below a reminder of the call for papers for the KEY 2011 conference. We hope you will think of joining us in Cardiff in May. best wishes Lise Fontaine and Michelle Aldridge KEY 2011: Keystroke Language (and Text) Production: perspectives from cognitive and functional linguistics 23-24 May 2011 Cardiff University, Cardiff, Wales The use of keystroke logging as a methodology in language research is not a new field of study since the first Computer Keystroke Logging conference was held at Umeå University in Sweden in 2002. However to date this area of research has primarily focussed on written composition and translation studies. The KEY 2011 workshop and conference intends to broaden this perspective by extending the contributions keystroke logging can make to language production generally, including spontaneous language such as chat messaging. Its theme is to explore functional and cognitive perspectives on the use of keystroke logging in language research where the focus of interest is on the dynamic process of production rather than on the static product of language production. Keynote Speakers Professor Kristyan Spelman Miller (University of Winchester) Dr Mick O’Donnell (Universidad Autónoma de Madrid and Wagsoft Software) Call for papers Papers are invited on the general theme of the conference, dealing with the use of keystroke logging in linguistic and language-related research. Presentations will be 20 minutes with 10 minutes discussion time. Papers which present work in progress or that focus on software development and methodology are also welcome. Although we will consider all contributions that relate to the main theme in general, we especially encourage papers that explore: · Evidence of cognitive processing in electronic language production · Corpora and the study of electronically produced language · Language or text as dynamic process (rather than static product) · Human-Computer Interaction as related to language and keyboard competence · Linguistic competence (including translation competence) · Descriptive work that enhances our understanding of electronically produced language · Functional accounts of language production (including manual and cognitive errors) · Methodological and/or ethical issues in the use of keystroke logging software Abstracts An abstract of approximately 400 words should be submitted electronically at the following webpage: http://linguistlist.org/confcustom/KEY2011. Please state, where appropriate, research questions, approach, method, data and (expected) results. Abstracts will be refereed anonymously by members of the programme committee. The deadline for submissions is 16 March 2011. Notification will be sent to authors by 4 April 2011. URL security and sharing links RE: Internet history textbook

Thanks I am exploring this book and related books now on Amazon. Just a note about net security and sharing links on Amazon and other web sites. You only needed this much of your URL http://www.amazon.com/Who-Controls-Internet-Illusions-Borderless/dp/01953406 47/ not this http://www.amazon.com/Who-Controls-Internet-Illusions-Borderless/dp/01953406 47/ref=tmm_pap_title_0 To add the extra part afterwards can sometimes be a security risk if there are codes when you are logged into Amazon that could allow others access to your account because of the coded information. It may never happen with Amazon for all I know I just also know that some of these extra codes are tracking information used by the web site to watch you web surfing path on their web site. ======================================================================== Academic MindTrek 2011: Call for Papers, Posters, Tutorials, Demos, and Workshops 28th-30th September, 2011 Tampere, Finland http://www.mindtrek.org, http://www.mindtrek.org/2011/academic In cooperation with ACM, ACM SIGMM and ACM SIGCHI publications will be published in the ACM digital library and a selected set of high-level contributions will published as book chapters or in journals ======================================================================== Academic MindTrek 2011 Call for Papers, Demonstrations, Tutorials and Workshops We are pleased to invite you to the Academic MindTrek conference from 28th - 30th September 2011, which brings together a cross-disciplinary crowd of people to investigate current and emerging topics of media in the ubiquitous arena. Among the media to be discussed, will be business, social, technical and content-related topics. September 6th is the main Academic day, featuring the following themes: Social Media ?Get social!? Social media and Web 2.0 technologies are applied in ever diverse practices both in private and public communities. Totally new business models are emerging, traditional communication and expression modalities are challenged, and new practices are constructed in the collaborative, interactive media space. Ambient and Ubiquitous Media ?The medium is the message!? ? This conference track focuses on the definition of ambient and ubiquitous media with a cross-disciplinary viewpoint: ambient media between technology, art, and content. The focus of this track is on applications, theory, art-works, mixed reality concepts, the Web 3.0, and user experiences that make ubiquitous and ambient media tick. Digital Games The culture and business of digital games is becoming increasingly varied. The current trends range from novel interface innovations and digital distribution channels to social game dynamics and player-generated content. The games track is open for theoretical works, empirical case studies and constructive projects. Open Source The last decade has seen a significant increase in open source initiatives such as open source software, open standards, open content, open media, or even open source hardware. On the one hand, the open movement has created new kinds of opportunities such as new business models and development approaches. On the other hand, it has introduced new kinds of technical and non-technical challenges. Media Business, Media Production and Media Management Media business and media management face the challenges of the emergence of new forms of digital media. This theme focuses on business studies, policies, practices, and organizational structure of media firms. It discusses competition, patterns of media usage, advertising models, and how traditional media can cope with the challenges coming from digital media focusing on media business and media management issues. In addition, special academic sessions (e.g. tutorials, demonstrations, workshops, and multidisciplinary sessions) will be held parallel to the MindTrek business conference. Academic speakers and authors are warmly welcome to attend the business conference tracks as part of the academic conference fee during these days as well. The MindTrek Association hosts MindTrek as a yearly conference, where the Academic MindTrek conference has been a part of this unique set of events comprising competitions, world famous keynote speakers, plenary sessions, media festivals, and workshops since 1997. Re: [Air-L] CMS for cross-dept/university project?
by Alexandra Samuel 13 Mar '11

13 Mar '11

hi Chris, Jumping into the conversation on the CMS front. I've built about thirty online communities and blogs, some in Drupal and some in Wordpress, and echo what has been said about Wordpress being a bit easier for folks to use (that said, the latest Drupal release is really focused on usability). Much depends on what your campus has the most of; if there's an IT team that has experience with one or the other, I'd make that the decisive factor. But before you jump into platform choice (a subject I can geek on about for hours) let me suggest a few meta-level steps & considerations: 1. Get really clear on your requirements before you choose a platform. In other words, make a list of the kind of content you need on your site, the functionality you need, and the different kind of users who will use the site (and what they need to have permission to contribute, edit or view). You inspired me to finally (!) post the quick-and-dirty requirements for our website in progress (see http://bit.ly/hZmlqG ); I wrote them in a very Drupally way but you could just make a list of the different content types and functions needed and then get some advice on which platform is best suited. 2. Think not just about what kinds of participation/contribution you'd like, but what you'll realistically achieve. I note that you want "social media tools" but I find a lot of organizations over-invest in social capacity that turns out to be unsustainable at their size (for more on this, and strategies that DO work for smaller organizations, see this post: http://bit.ly/why90101) What I've found sustainable for us is to have a 10-hr/wk student who keeps our Twitter account active, and who can review the blog posts that our various faculty and associates have written on their various blogs & then get them onto our site (initially via cut-and-paste but ultimately via an aggregation that queues those posts for review & approval). Since you're running a writing program you can look at hiring students to do more writing-intensive work (e.g blogging ) but I'd have very low expectations for faculty contribution, unless those faculty members are already writing blogs that you can republish or creating other kinds of content (course assignments, papers, etc) that an enterprising student assistant could round up and post to the blog.General rule of thumb is it takes 2x as much effort to get someone else to contribute as to write something yourself. 3. Collaborating with other universities is totally smart and in a sane universe would make sense; that said over 6 years in building online communities for NGOs we never saw a single aspirational peer-to-peer collaboration actually come to pass. What seems to work better is for one organization (i.e. you) to take the lead, build what you need, and then make it available for others to use. You can do this by downloading your entire site configuration and handing it to someone else to use as the basis for creating their own site (as a tarball) or conceivably (in the case of Drupal) creating a single multi-site installation that allows all the different organizations to run their site off the same installation (saves on maintenance and development costs but limits your ability to diverge from one another in your site structure, though not in your sites' design.) The big advantage of Drupal for what you're talking about is its use of taxonomy. If you were building a Drupal site you could set up some overarching categories (which you can use in addition to free tags) and use those to categorize events, speakers, teaching resources and other types of content (e.g. status updates, blog posts). Drupal automatically generates a page for every category or tag on the site, so for example you could end up with a page on "scientific writing" that would include events, speakers, teaching resources, blog posts etc all related to that topic, and automatically have comparable pages for professional writing, online communications, nonprofit communications etc. With a very modest amount of custom theming work (ie. the creation of custom templates) in Views, you could make those tag/category pages divide up those different kinds of content into different sections of the page and it can all look quite nice. Wordpress is going to be at least a bit easier for folks to contribute to (esp for bloggers) but a bit less flexible (though it's amazing how much you can do in Wordpress now). It's a bit easier to mess around with and tweak, which can be a pro or a con: if you've got one, semi-geeky person who gets into it, they can continue building out the site by adding widgets, plugins, customizing the theme, etc. All that is possible in Drupal too but a little trickier; it takes a higher level of skill and nerve to hack on a Drupal site. (I say this as a woman who regularly tortures her Wordpress blog but is a lot more cautious when working on my Drupal sites). BTW note that both Wordpress and Drupal can support aggregation-driven strategies as noted above in #2. In principle we'd be happy to share our Drupal install for simcentre.ca once it's done but I'd need to check with our long-suffering developers to see if that is ok with them. OK I'll stop now but happy to answer more questions if it's helpful. Best of luck!
