---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Call for Position Papers SAME 2011 ? 4th International Workshop on Semantic Ambient Media Experience (NAMU Series) 29th June-2nd July 2011 in conjunction with the 5th International Conference on Communities and Technologies, Brisbane, Australia http://www.ambientmediaassociation.org/node/60, http://ct2011.urbaninformatics.net/ Creating the business value-creation, vision, media theories and technology for ambient media --> extended deadline for position papers: 17th April 2011 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Call for Papers The medium is the message! And the message was transmitted via a single distinguishable media such as television, the Web, the radio, or books. In the age of ubiquitous and pervasive computation, where the information goes through a distributed interlinked network of devices, the question ?what is content in the age of ambient media?? becomes more and more of importance. Ambient media are embedded throughout the natural environment of the consumer ? in his home, in his car, in restaurants, and on his mobile device. Predominant example services are smart wallpapers in homes, location based services, RFID based entertainment services for children, or intelligent homes. The distribution of the medium throughout the natural environment implies a paradigm change of how to think about content. Until recently, content was identified as single entities to information ? a video stream, audio stream, TV broadcast. However, in the age of ambient media, the notion of content extends from the single entity thinking towards a plethora of sensor networks, smart devices, personalized services, media embedded in the natural environment of the user and even the World Wide Web. The user actively participates and co-designs media experience with his location and context based input. Initiatives as the smart Web considering location based tagging for web-pages underline this development. This multidisciplinary workshop aims at a series, and at the creation of a think-tank of creative thinkers coming from technology, art, human-computer interaction, and social sciences, that are interested in glimpsing the future of semantic ambient intelligent empowered media technology. Thus, the workshop aims to answer to the challenges how to select, compose, and generate ambient content; how to interpret content for the ambient presentation; how to re-use ambient content and learning experiences; what are the characteristics of ambient media, its content, and technology; and what are ambient media in terms of story-telling and art. And finally, how do ambient media create business and value? How can ambient media be integrated into business processes and strategies? In addition, Semantics plays a crucial role in the generation of ambient media content. It can be seen as the glue between the raw data and the ambient media. Therefore we are interested to see innovative ideas how data can be (semi-)automatically be interpreted and translated into media presentations. Workshop Challenges ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ? What is ?content? and how can it be presented in the age of ?ubiquitous? and ?pervasive?? ? How to select, compose and generate ambient content? ? How to interpret content for an ambient presentation? ? How to manage and re-use ambient content in specific application scenarios (e.g. e-learning)? ? What is interactivity between the single consumers and consumer groups in the ambient context? ? How can collaborative or audience participatory content be supported? ? How can sensor data be interpreted and intelligently mined? ? How can existing media such as TV, home entertainment, cinema extended by ambient media? ? How can ambient media be applied in business processes? ? How do ambient media create value and business? ? Business opportunities and strategic issues of ambient media? ? Which methods for experience design, prototyping, and business models exist? ? What means Quality of Experience (QoE) in the context of ambient media? Using Social Media class
by Holly Kruse 28 Mar '11

28 Mar '11

Another curricular question... I'm proposing a 2-hour, winter intersession undergraduate course on Using Social Media. This will in some way be an expanded version of a course I'll be teaching the following semester on digital communication (a revision of a seminar I've taught before), and it will have an applied element. I need to come up with a tentative syllabus by the end of the week. Any suggestions, syllabi, or other resources would be most appreciated! Facebook and people in their thirties
by Attwood, Fiona 28 Mar '11

28 Mar '11

Can anyone suggest any studies that have been done of the way that people in their thirties engage with Facebook, and specifically how this has impacted on the way they think about and manage their personal relationships? I am particularly interested in the ways in which people’s views of intimacy, community and communication might have shifted since their use of Facebook and how they compare their pre-Facebook and post-Facebook experiences. Workshop call: Online Patient Experience, HCI 2011
by Phoenix Mo 28 Mar '11

28 Mar '11

Apologies if cross-posted ==================================================================== We invite submissions for the 1st Workshop on Online Patient Experience (PEx) and its role in e-health. The Internet has an important role in the provision of reliable, relevant and timely health information for the public and patients. Traditionally, authoritative health information has been based on facts and figures, not the experiences of patients. However the rise of patient-generated content on the Internet, in the form of online patient experiences (PEx) has changed the landscape of health decision-making. Online PEx can have both positive and negative influences - PEx can enhance social support, and facilitate adjustment to an illness but can also raise anxiety levels and in an unmoderated format can deliver very powerful but misleading messages. PEx is important for researchers and e-health designers alike and in this workshop we seek to bring the new PEx community together to share new approaches and findings. The workshop is being run as part of the 25th BCS conference on Human-Computer Interaction (HCI 2011) which is being held in July at Northumbria University, Newcastle upon Tyne with the theme "health, wealth and happiness" - see www.hci2011.co.uk Position papers of 2-4 pages should be sent to Dr. Phoenix Mo (phoenix.mo(a)northumbria.ac.uk) by the 1st May 2011. Full workshop details available here: https://sites.google.com/site/opex2011/

List of Grad Programs and Research Centers
by Sravan Bhamidipati 26 Mar '11

26 Mar '11

Hello everybody. I am Sravan from India, and am new to the group. I am looking for Ph.D. programs in Internet Studies. The existing AoIR Wiki lists for Graduate Programs<http://wiki.aoir.org/index.php?title=Graduate_Programs>and Research Centers <http://wiki.aoir.org/index.php?title=Research_Centers> seem incomplete, given the large variety of people seen in the email archives. It will be very helpful for students if you could reply to this thread with a name and/or URL of your department, if it offers a graduate program and/or conducts research in this field. I will subsequently update the Wiki pages. Thank you all in advance. -- Sravan Bhamidipati Software Performance Engineer Symantec Corporation
