Ethical issues in the use of Facebook as a health intervention
by Osman Ahmed 26 Jan '11

26 Jan '11

Dear AIoR's, I am a PhD candidate at the University of Otago, Dunedin where I am looking at the use of Social Networking Sites as a means of facilitating recovery from sports concussion. Our preliminary work (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/20367328) showed that concussion groups on Facebook were being using as a support facility for those who had suffered a concussion. As a follow up to this, we conducted Focus Group studies with local individuals who had been recently concussed, and the feedback we got suggested that individuals who had sustained a concussion would be keen to receive support online from their peers and have interaction with a Doctor through a Facebook concussion group. We are in the process of planning a trial of a Facebook group for individuals with a sports concussion(moderated/facilitated by a Doctor and Sport Physiotherapist) in the near future and we are trying to identify all of the potential ethical issues. Obviously the Facebook group would be "secret" (visible only to the Doctor and the users in the group), and everyone in the group would be made aware of the option of adjusting the privacy settings of their Facebook account prior to entering the group. The Facebook profile used by the Doctor would be one created exclusively for the purposes of the study i.e. contain no personal/social information related to the Doctor. The Facebook group would not replace the user's GP as a point of reference, and the users would be instructed to cease participation in the group if they felt it exacerbated their symptoms. I would be very interested in hearing from anyone who has any history or experience in using Social Networking Sites for either health promotion or as a health intervention, as this field is in its infancy. If any of you have any suggestions or ethical issues you can forsee in such a trial then it would be great to hear from you too! Best wishes and thanks for your time, Osman Ahmed PhD Candidate School of Physiotherapy University of Otago Dunedin New Zealand

Integration of Inter-Rater realability for Qualitative Data using Cohen's Kappa and Pearson Correllation in Dedoose online.
by Jason Taylor 26 Jan '11

26 Jan '11

Over at http://www.Dedoose.com we have finished deploying the new training center, a massive step forward in validating qualitative and mixed methods research. The Dedoose Training Center is all about great research and our efforts to include features that support the development and practice of systematic and rigorous qualitative and mixed methods research. After a lot of hard work by our Dedoose team, we're thrilled to finally see the Training Center online. The Training Center is, as one user put it, 'a god-send' for both research individuals and teams who want to insure reliability and validity in their qualitative code system application and quantitative code weighting activity. We began by drawing upon our pioneering implementations in EthnoNotes, and then expanded the Training Center to increase the efficiency of creating tests, reviewing test results, and implemented more rigorous and sophisticated statistics and other test feedback. We are confident that users will find the system a pleasure to use and will appreciate how the Center helps researchers build and maintain scientifically valid and rigorous best practices. Just another step on the road the make Dedoose the best qualitative and mixed-methods research app around. Stay up with the latest on our blog: http://www.dedoose.com/blog/. In other news we changed our pricing model to a simple $11/month per user for most users, and also extended the free trial period to an entire month. That means you can try Dedoose today with no commitment, no credit card. Please help us improve Dedoose and Qualitative and Mixed Methods research by giving us feedback, ideas, and your support! Thanks, ~ Jason Taylor of Dedoose

The International Conference on Weblogs and Social Media is a unique forum that brings together researchers from the disciplines in computer science, linguistics, communication, and the social sciences. The broad goal of ICWSM is to increase understanding of social media in all its incarnations. Submissions describing research that blends social science and technology are especially encouraged. Though this conference is relatively new, it has become one of the premier venues for social scientists and technologists to gather and discuss cutting-edge research in Social Media. This is largely due to a typical acceptance rate of 20% for full-length research papers and support from Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AAAI). For ICWSM 2011, in addition to the usual program of contributed technical talks, tutorials and invited presentations, the main conference will include a selection of keynote talks and invited talks from prominent social scientists and technologists. This year, for the first time, we will be expanding our workshop program and are planning an additional workshop day in addition to the usual tutorial and main conference. We also have an exciting roster of four workshops. Please check the website for details.
