POLITICS, PRACTICES AND POWER http://www.ipa-2011.cardiff.ac.uk/ I soliciting papers for the panel: Panel 20: Globalizing Technology and Innovation Policies: Interpretative and Critical Approaches Chair: Jeremy Hunsinger, Center for Digital Discourse and Culture, Virginia Tech, send proposals to: jhuns(a)vt.edu This panel addresses technology and innovation policies as politico-ethico-juridico- technical systems comprised of arrangements of things and peoples. Through it, we are particularly interested in the transitions these systems undergo as they migrate from local and national applications to transnational and global systems. These systems undergo significant translations, modifications, and reorganizations as they come to match the sensemaking practices of global and transnational interests and their policymaking regimes. Examples of such transitions and translations ongoing now are: questions of information technology, intellectual property, genetically modified organisms, internet governance, STEM education funding, Mode 2 centered research funding and many, many others. Given the plurality of possibilities for this panel, it is important to maintain two themes in your submissions: 1. center on technology, innovation, or research policy, 2. the trend from local to global in the application of these policies. 1. I agree with Jeremy: direct quotes are easily searchable. 2. For citing ideas, when a 550 page book is a bit too broad ;-) then why not put at the end of the reference the first phrase of the apra. that you are referencing. Dear all, I have started to download some academic books onto a Kindle account. It is ok for reading and for noting different thoughts as I read. However, since there is no page numbering, how do you cite the location of material in the books when you include it in your own work? What are the requirements for in-line cites and for the bibliography? Are the line numbers unique for Kindle and there is another set for the Apple iBooks, etc? What is a modern scholar to do? Christians Ethics Research Award. To be considered for the Christians Award, submissions should interpret or address important theoretical issues in the areas of ethics, mass communication theory, and the relationship between media and technology and culture; interpret and apply concepts employed in Christians' work in new and insightful ways. CFP: TRANSNATIONAL HCI: Humans, Computers and Interactions in Transnational Context A workshop at CHI 2011 May 8, 2011, Vancouver BC, Canada Recent studies in Human-Computer Interaction have turned to examining computing in non-Western contexts, increasingly recognizing that technologies and activities of their participants are not bounded by single geographies, cultures, or borders. In our interactions with everyday technologies, we are increasingly tied to people and machines in other countries, cultures and networks. Such activities require us to consider technologies not just in national, but also in a transnational context. That is, humans, computers and interactions not limited to single countries or cultures, but forming communities across spaces, managing boundary-crossings, and forming hybrid practices. This workshop will bring together researchers and designers across academia and industry to address the effects, implications, and design opportunities for individuals and communities who engage in transnational technological practices. We seek participants to explore the role of information and communication technologies (ICTs) in transnational settings for our workshop, TRANSNATIONAL HCI, at CHI 2011. We aim to assemble an interdisciplinary group of practitioners to expand current work on ICTs in global processes, to develop a language and toolset for the study of technologies in transnational spaces, and to address the role of ICTs for local-global user interaction, collaboration across boundaries and negotiations of power relations. Examples of possible paper topics include, but are not limited to: * The use of pervasive technologies such as multiplayer gaming across borders * Studies of social networking among Diaspora communities * Use of ICTs in censorship state zones * The role of ICTs in reconfiguring “the local” * Technology in the context of international migration and politics * Cross-cultural collaboration Submissions that develop theoretical approaches, report on empirical work or on technology design are welcome, and need not be limited to "developing world" sites. Full papers may later be solicited for a potential special issue.
