ISOC Statement on Egypt’s Internet shutdown
by Richard Forno 01 Feb '11

01 Feb '11

The Internet Society on Egypt’s Internet shutdown We are following the current events in Egypt with concern as it appears that all incoming and outgoing Internet traffic has been disrupted. The Internet Society believes that the Internet is a global medium that fundamentally supports opportunity, empowerment, knowledge, growth, and freedom and that these values should never be taken away from individuals. The Internet Society considers this recent action by the Egyptian government to block Internet traffic to be an inappropriate response to a political crisis. It is a very serious decision for a government to block all Internet access in its country, and a serious intrusion into its citizens’ basic rights to communicate. If the blockage continues, it will have a very detrimental impact on Egypt’s economy and society. Ultimately, the Egyptian people and nation are the ones that will suffer, while the rest of the world will be worse off with the loss of Egyptian voices on the net. However we are most concerned about the safety and security of the Egyptian people. Alongside the rest of the world, we share the hope for a positive and lasting solution to the problems that have risen to the surface there. In the longer term, we are sure that the world will learn a lesson from this very unfortunate example, and come to understand that cutting off a nation’s access to the Internet only serves to fuel dissent and does not address the underlying causes of dissatisfaction. http://isoc.org/wp/newsletter/?p=3091

Fwd: [IJoC] Open Call for Papers on Tunisian and Egyptian Revolutions
by Marianne van den Boomen 01 Feb '11

01 Feb '11

-------- Original Message -------- Subject: [IJoC] Open Call for Papers on Tunisian and Egyptian Revolutions Date: 1 Feb 2011 10:14:10 -0800 From: Arlene Luck <aluck(a)law.usc.edu> To: aluck(a)law.usc.edu OPEN CALL FOR ARTICLES ON: âTunisian and Egyptian Revolutions and the Role of Communication Technologiesâ An International Journal of Communication (IJoC) Special Features Section on the recent Tunisian and Egyptian revolutions in North Africa to be published in 2011. Submission Deadline: March 15, 2011 Guest Editors: Johanne Kuebler and Ilhem Allagui The International Journal of Communication is accepting papers for its Features Section about the Tunisian and the Egyptian protests and their sequels in the Arab region. Despite numerous efforts by Arab leaders to limit Internet access and to censor all mediaâespecially new mediaâthe spread of satellite TV and the Internet have transformed the media landscape in the Arab and Muslim worlds. Revolutionary protests by Tunisians led to the ousting of President Zine El Abidine Ben Ali, who maintained strict media censorship after 23 years in power. Similarly, just weeks after the Tunisian uprising, demonstrations and riots have left the rule of the Hosni Mubarak government in a quandary. The oppression of free speech and democratic political participation have galvanized both Tunisians and Egyptians into unprecedented acts of revolt, demonstrating perseverance toward the goal of real political change. Some observers attribute the success of the Tunisian revolution to the use of new media and social networking sites. While the penetration rate of Facebook in Tunisia is barely 19% (according to Socialbakers, the Facebook statistical portal), YouTube and DailyMotion were banned until January 13, 2011 despite Ben Aliâs desperate attempts to calm the population by promising unblocked access to Internet Web sites. Ben Ali eventually fled Tunisia on January 14. As of this writing, the outcome of the Egyptian uprisings remains to be seen, and the potential for similar uprisings throughout the Arab world is very much in evidence. This Features Section of the IJoC invites discussions about these events occurring in the North African region in relation to communication technologies. By addressing these events, we aim to have a better understanding of the role of communication technologies as instruments for social change. The submissions, empirical or theoretical, can be short observations, analyses or opinions of 1,500â5,000 words. Papers should follow the APA style (5th Ed.). Submissions will be peer reviewed. Please send submissions to: Ilhem Allagui at iallagui(a)aus.edu by March 15. We look forward to your articles for this Special Features Section. Sincerely, Manuel Castells and Larry Gross IJoC Editors ________________________________________________________________________ International Journal of Communication USC Annenberg Press http://ijoc.org/

It's particularly ironic in light of Google's actions with regard to China's policies about controlling information. Apparently when the repressive government seems to maybe be losing, or it might get them some good press, Google is going to side with the little guys instead? viral reality?
by John Postill 01 Feb '11

01 Feb '11

On the subject of Egypt's and other country's protests, I'm currently doing anthropological research into social media and activism in Barcelona. I'm wondering whether we're entering an era in which political reality is framed by re-sent SMS messages, retweets, YouTube videos, viral campaigns, and so on – an age of 'viral reality'. Even those who rightly reject the hyperbole surrounding these events would appear to be shaped in their perceptions by rapidly moving, ephemeral digital contents that are widely 'shared' (i.e. spread). Dear Colleagues There's quite a nicely developed literature on the motivations behind contributing to Wikipedia and peer-produced software (e.g. Linux), but I wonder if there are notable studies on the motivations for updating statuses in Facebook and Twitter. References would be welcome. Thanks in advance Nicholas _______________ Dr. Nicholas John sociothink.com nicholasjohn.tel

Re: [Air-L] ISOC Statement on Egypt?s Internet shutdown
by Seda Guerses 01 Feb '11

i believe that part of the problem is how the sm's relationship to the uprising in egypt is framed within the greater discourse of what is currently happening in north africa . Here is an excerpt from another blogger: A Guide: How Not To Say Stupid Stuff About Egypt " “The Twitter Revolution”. No, this is the Revolution of the Egyptian people. Egyptians resisted for decades. They were tortured, jailed and repressed by the Mubarak and Sadat regimes. Twitter and Facebook are tools. They did not stand in front of the water canons, or go to jail for all these years to get the credit. There were demonstrations all summer long and for a several years through out Egypt but they are rarely covered, because we are worried about what Sarah Palin said, or some moronic Imam saying something stupid. Does it sound a bit arrogant to take credit for a people’s struggle?" in the context of the rest of the points mentioned (http://sarthanapalos.wordpress.com/2011/01/31/a-guide-how-not-to-say-stupid…) , i hope that some of the main elements of the dominant discourse on egypt and how it is insulting to many involved becomes apparent. i by the way love the coincidence that this thread is parallel to the one on "subaltern counter publics". :) s.

Reminder: Games and Innovation Seminar, May 5-6, Tampere, Finland
by Olli Sotamaa 01 Feb '11

01 Feb '11

Hi all, the deadline for submissions (February 7th) is approaching for the Games and Innovation Seminar. We are also proud to announce our two invited commentators for the working papers: Ted F. Tschang and Mirva Peltoniemi. See their info at seminar webpage: http://gamesandinnovationseminar.wordpress.com/ Best, Olli -- Olli Sotamaa // Postdoctoral Researcher School of Information Sciences // University of Tampere olli.sotamaa(a)uta.fi // Skype: olli.sotamaa // +358 50 420 1472 *** Call for Papers: Games and Innovation Research Seminar May 5th-6th, 2011, University of Tampere, FINLAND The games industry carries the image of innovation and creativity, but still we know relatively little about the innovation processes that take place within the industry. To date, games and innovation have been studied in several disparate fields, including cultural studies, design research and industrial economics and management. Perhaps due to such a fragmented nature of academic work on the subject, the bulk of the influential work on games and innovation is found in practically oriented guidebooks authored by experienced games industry experts. The present seminar aims at bringing together scholars of games and innovation from diverse fields and stimulating dialogue between them. Moreover, the goal of the seminar is to encourage the further development of rigorous academic research on the topic while keeping the work accessible to game professionals. The seminar is welcoming submissions on the praxis of game development, the characteristics of innovation in game context, supply and demand for innovation in games, creativity and games, and the relationship of game innovation and legal practices. It has been argued that the growing level of concentration of the games industry has rendered innovation virtually non-existent in game development. The submissions are encouraged to comment on this claim. What is innovation in games? How does it manifest? Can you measure it? How has it changed since digital games were first introduced? Is creativity in games domain-specific? What is the status of innovation praxis within games industry? Possible topics include, but are not limited to: * Game production processes, design processes and design tools * Game industry dynamics and game development * Roles of different individuals and different types of firms in game innovation * Classifications of innovation in games * Historical and local perspectives on games and innovation * Emerging trends in game innovation * Game ideation and creativity * Vision communication * Prototyping and testing practices * Player driven and data driven game innovation * Open innovation, co-innovation, participatory design * Indie development * Game competitions, game jams * The role of legislation in innovation, intellectual property and patents * Interaction of hardware and software innovation We also encourage researchers of non-digital games to submit on related topics. The seminar is the seventh in the annual series of game studies working paper seminars organised by Game Research Lab at University of Tampere. Due to the work-in-progress emphasis, we strongly encourage submitting late breaking results, working papers and/or submissions from graduate students. Early considerations from projects currently in progress are most welcome, as the purpose of the seminar is to have peer-to-peer discussions and thereby provide support in refining and improving research work in this area. Tentative plans have been made on a book publication of selected papers. The papers to be presented will be chosen based on extended abstract review. Full papers are distributed prior the event to all participants, in order to facilitate discussion. The two-day event consists of themed sessions that aim to introduce current research projects and discuss ongoing work in studies of games industry, innovation and design processes. The seminar will be chaired by Professor Frans Mäyrä (Department of Information Studies and Interactive Media, University of Tampere). Invited paper commentators include Dr. Mirva Peltoniemi from Aalto University School of Science and Technology and Associate Professor Ted F. Tschang from Singapore Management University, Lee Kong Chian School of Business. The seminar will be held in Tampere, Finland and will be free of charge; the number of participants will be restricted. Important Dates * Abstract Deadline: February 7, 2011 * Notification of Acceptance: February 21, 2011 * Full Paper deadline: April 7, 2011 * Seminar dates: May 5-6, 2011 Submission Guidelines The extended abstract submissions should be between 500-1000 words (excluding references). Abstracts should be sent to <gamesandinnovationseminar {at} gmail.com> as plain text only (no attachments). Guidelines for submitting a full seminar paper will be provided with the notification of acceptance. Our aim is that everyone participating has been able to read materials submitted to the seminar. Therefore, the maximum length for a full paper is set to 6000 words (excluding references). Note also that the presentations held at the seminar should encourage discussion, instead of only repeating the information presented in the papers. Tentatively, every paper will be presented for 10 minutes and discussed for 20 minutes. I have used the subaltern public sphere theory in a paper published in 2006. Zhang, W. (2006). Constructing and disseminating subaltern public discourses in China <http://www.javnost-thepublic.org/media/datoteke/13-2-zhang.pdf>. *Javnost-The Public, 13*(2), 41-64. Click the link and you can download the paper. I am also revising a book chapter titled "virtual community as subaltern public spheres". Let me know if you are interested in getting a copy. A book called "counterpublic and the state" includes several studies on online counterpublics.
