Looking for examples of aggregation communities
by Derek Hansen 25 Oct '10

25 Oct '10

Colleagues, I'm looking for some examples of communities of volunteers that help amalgamate a collection of materials rather than create them. The example we are examining is the Encyclopedia of Life, which aggregates data from many different scientific databases (and user-generated content such as Flickr images) into a coherent whole. The participants are called "curators" and their main role is to validate and approve content rather than create it. They also do a lot of work to integrate the original content into a coherent whole. What similar examples exist on the web today? What examples have existed for decades or centuries? Thanks ahead of time for any examples or thoughts. Derek Hansen Assistant Professor iSchool University of Maryland

Yes, yes, yes. It was not only one of the best IRs I have attended, it was one of my best conference experiences ever. Thanks to the organizing committee and the executive for their hard work. I look forward to next year, I am told that the exec will be performing a song and dance review and Michael might wear tails and a top hat. privacy related practices, datasets and research
by Seda Guerses 25 Oct '10

25 Oct '10

dear airudites, a friend and i want to write something about how to develop privacy related practices when collecting, processing and sharing datasets for research purposes. we are interested in what it takes to be compliant with data protection regulation (or similar regulation that applies in your state/country) or the ethics board, but more importantly we are interested in principles that could be seen as good privacy practices with respect to scientific research. these could be practices that you have developed in the past with respect to consent, anonymization (which has proven to be a weak protection mathematically, but what are ways around this problem), transparency, community etc. are there practices in your institution or community that you can point us to, or that you have thought about that you would like to share with us? also problems that you have run into would be very valuable. :) thank you, seda Disclaimer: http://www.kuleuven.be/cwis/email_disclaimer.htm

ir11 - Thank you
by Steve Jones 24 Oct '10

Thanks to all who participated in IR11. It was, as usual, another excellent AoIR conference. But even though I write "as usual" it should not be taken for granted that an enormous amount of work goes into it, and that every conference has had a different character to it, another thing that greatly distinguishes it from so many other conferences. The conference organizers, led by Ann-Sofie Axelsson and Ylva Hård af Segerstad, the program chair, Torill Mortensson, and all of the other volunteers who made it possible deserve enormous credit and thanks for their work. I also want to take a moment to thank the AoIR executive committee for its continued leadership and guidance of the association. As AoIR approaches its "teen years" (NB: I don't want to take that metaphor any further) it will likely continue to experience growing pains, and it is good to know that it will continue to be in good hands. I'll look forward to seeing many of you in Seattle, and, I hope, sooner. Steve Jones

the best way to archive web material?
by Sarah Oates 22 Oct '10

22 Oct '10

Hello and apologies if this has been asked recently or seems a bit basic! Does anyone have a recommendation for software to archive web material? I am heading a project to study political activism on the Russian internet and we need to store a range of different types of web pages across time ... I can't even get my PC to store even a small amount with full images. My research partner in Ukraine can, but she has a Mac (not an option available at my university right now). I have a small budget to buy some software, although freeware suggestions always appreciated. I want to have the archive complete so that we can work with it, share it with other researchers, go back to it as necessary, etc., so I really want to have full graphics etc. Optimally, it would be something that could do automatic crawls and downloads as well, although as we are tending to focus on relatively short periods of intense interest around particularly issues/events, we don't need a long-term crawl system. Suggestions from this clever and useful list most welcome, although currently this list is making me sad that I am not in Sweden to meet people at exciting venues and hear what I am sure is some great work (: Sincerely Sarah Sarah Oates Professor of Political Communication School of Social and Political Sciences Adam Smith Building University of Glasgow Glasgow G12 8RT Email: sarah.oates(a)glasgow.ac.uk Website: www.media-politics.com <http://www.media-politics.com/> Telephone: (0)141 330 5124 The University of Glasgow, charity number SC004401
