We are looking for a person who can teach journalism skills across multiple media platforms. The candidate should have media experience, teaching experience, and a demonstrated record of research and publishing capabilities. dear peter, i have a germany-centric response to your question, i hope it is not too narrow in scope. the year i started studying computer science, university of bremen introduced a summer school called informatica feminale, which had the intention of providing an alternative computer science curricula to women in computing. the "alternative" in my opinion referred to two things: a) to a women's space in which the gender roles are for a moment shifted (all the participants, i.e., instructors, organizers, and students are women, at the time women made up 4-7% of cs students in germany) and b) to providing a background similar to that which you are searching, with a feminist twist. i looked at the program for this year and have to admit that the curricula has swayed into a training program/career planning help, but the curricula of the prior years give some insihgt into some of the aspirations of the summer school in the beginning of the 00s. for example, see the link to the colloquim: http://www.informatica-feminale.de/Sommerstudium/Sommer2001/Liste_Ringvorle… or, simply check older curricula here: http://www.informatica-feminale.de/Sommerstudium/index.html with our little group back then, i remember reading and discussing much around alan turing, his life, his construction of the turing test (can the machine fake a "man" or a "woman" in the immitation game? can the machine fake a human? replacing the question: can the machine think? see here the original article: http://www.loebner.net/Prizef/TuringArticle.html) and its significance for computer science. this also was accompanied by a historical conception of the computer as a machine, a tool and later as media. here we were relying on the work of heidi schelhowe who was inspired by carl adam petri and worked together with friedrich nake. see for example (unfortunately in german): SCHELHOWE, H., F. Hi all, I am writing because I hope to tap into your collective knowledge and networks related to privacy research. I am a doctoral candidate in psychology and have been researching the theoretical aspects of privacy, as well as other topics related to the social effects of new media. If you or anyone you know is doing work related to privacy (psychologists as well as scholars from other disciplines) I would love to hear what you're doing. Because this is such an interdisciplinary field it can sometimes be difficult to know where to look for the most current research. Non-Code-Centric Texts in Introductions To Computer Science?

Hey list, I have an open ended question for this list that is intended to be a bit selfish and (hopefully) a bit beneficial for everyone else. Recently, I read Weizenbaum's Computing Power And Human Reason, in which he makes arguments about the things that AI should & shouldn't address. (It's a bit dated.) In it, he makes a point that because he is trained as a computer scientist he considers himself a poorly educated entrant to the debate, & later suggests that an introduction to computer science should be more than an introduction to programming, but also into some of the theory behind the field. (By "theory", I mean the conceptual ideas behind computing, not discrete mathematics.) As a computer scientist whose introduction to computer science was essentially an introduction to programming along with some key algorithms in the field and a few good software engineering practices, I found his argument appealing. As such, I'd like to ask the list -both computer scientists and non- what (if any) texts would you like undergraduate computer scientists to be exposed to that are _not_ solely focused on good practices in C++/Java/<Language of Choice> programming? Baudrillard's Simulacra And Simulations? Lessig's Code v. 2? Simon's The Sciences Of The Artificial? Some linguistics text by Chomsky? Or is this whole idea dumb & everything is totally hunky-dory?
