Eddan, I know the case of Cisco System and Hughes network building a IP based videoconferencing system in Ethiopia allowing the Prime Minister and other cadres in the government to connect with local nodes of the administration and instruct supposedly independent locally elected representatives on how they should run their constituencies. Probably not exactly what you are looking for, but still an example of "surveillance and control" which is internal to the state apparatus. You can find an article I wrote on this system here http://www.igi-global.com/bookstore/Article.aspx?TitleId=37556 And if you need any further information, I'll be happy to help ( iginio(a)gmail.com) Iginio ------------------------------ >> >> Message: 5 >> Date: Thu, 14 Oct 2010 11:27:02 -0700 >> From: Eddan Katz <eddank(a)aya.yale.edu> >> To: air-l(a)listserv.aoir.org >> Cc: eddan(a)eff.org >> Subject: [Air-L] Customized Technology for Repressive Regimes >> Message-ID: >> <AANLkTi=-wGamLVaWgdtSNZ-=d7i0sJHuMRCzq8z27E10(a)mail.gmail.com> >> Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1 >> >> Does anyone know of research and/or evidence regarding the customized sale >> of surveillance and/or censorship technology to repressive regimes? >> >> I've been working on the corporate responsibility issues regarding the >> Nokia >> monitoring centers in Iran (Holding Nokia Responsible for Surveilling >> Dissidents in Iran: >> http://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2010/10/saharkhiz-v-nokia) >> and am looking for further examples (such as in >> http://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2010/01/selling-china-surveillance) I'm >> looking for particular examples of information and communication >> technologies especially. >> >> Any guidance would be much appreciated. >> >> Thanks, >> Eddan >> >> >> Eddan Katz >> Electronic Frontier Foundation, International Affairs Director >> 454 Shotwell St. San Francisco, CA 94110-1914 >> office: +1(415) 436-9333, x.133; mobile: +1(415) 728-5800; skype: >> eddankatz >> >> >> ------------------------------ >> >> _______________________________________________ >> The Air-L(a)listserv.aoir.org mailing list >> is provided by the Association of Internet Researchers http://aoir.org >> Subscribe, change options or unsubscribe at: >> http://listserv.aoir.org/listinfo.cgi/air-l-aoir.org >> >> Join the Association of Internet Researchers: >> http://www.aoir.org/ >> >> End of Air-L Digest, Vol 75, Issue 15 >> ************************************* >> > >

Dear fellow AoIR Members, - Have you thought about using social media to disseminate and promote your research? - Do you incorporate social media/networking sites in your research-related activities? - Have social media and networking sites in anyway changed the way you approach your research/work? If you answer 'yes' to any of these questions, we would like to invite you to participate in a short confidential online survey (~20-25 minutes) being conducted by the Social Media Lab at Dalhousie University in Canada. Asian new media resources (inquiry)
by iskandar zulkarnain 15 Oct '10

15 Oct '10

Dear fellow AOIR, I'm formulating a syllabus for a summer course on Asian New Media. My particular interest is actually New Media in Southeast Asia, but for this class I'm widening the regional scope into East, South, and Southeast Asian New Media. So far I have collected materials from Routledge's edited collection *Asia.com: Asia encounters the Internet*, David Hill and Krishna Sen's *The internet in Indonesia's New Democracy*, Ravi Sundaram's *Pirate Modernity*, Amit S. Rai's *Untimely Bollywood*, and couple articles published by Berkman Center such as Mridul Chowdhury's article on Burma's Saffron Revolution and Mary Joyce's article on citizen journalism in South Korea. I feel that there so many other possible materials out there. So I thought that maybe people on this listserve could give me some suggestion about other texts that I should consider using. I include the course description of my summer course to give a clearer sense about what kind of class it is. Thanks in advance, izul This course explores “new media” in East, South, and Southeast Asia, where technological development and diffusion have evolved differently than in the “West.” How do new media influence or reflect notions of citizenship and personal liberty? How do their proliferations restructure and/or challenge social, cultural and political spaces? Case studies of media institutions, contemporary forms of public culture, and popular (e.g. Facebook), alternative (e.g. Videochronic), and artistic (e.g. A/S/L) media practices will illuminate the roles that new media play in transforming nations, cultures, and ethnic, race, class, and gender identities under the rubric of globalization. -- Iskandar Zulkarnain HASTAC Scholars 2010 Website: https://www.hastac.org/users/zhoel13<http://www.hastac.org/scholars> Co-Editors Invisible Culture An Electronic Journal for Visual Culture University of Rochester Website: http://www.rochester.edu/in_visible_culture/ Ph.D. Student Visual and Cultural Studies 424 Morey Hall University of Rochester Rochester, NY 14627

[techrhet] Deadline Extended: BWe Special Issue on Multimodal Composing
by Lynn Reid 15 Oct '10

15 Oct '10

Apologies for cross-posting. Please circulate widely! The deadline for submissions has been extended to November 15th. Technical guidelines for multimodal submissions are also included. Multimodal Composing: Council on Basic Writing *Opportunities and Challenges * *in Basic Writing Contexts* * * *BWe* Guest Editor: Barbara Gleason, City College-CUNY Assistant Editors: Wynne Ferdinand & Lynn Reid *Extended Deadline for Submissions:* November 15, 2010 *Technical Guidelines for Submissions* *appended.* 2011 *BWe* Special Issue: Call for Submissions For the upcoming issue of *BWe*, we seek essays on multimodal writing in college and pre-college composition and rhetoric classes. As Cynthia Selfe argues in the June 2009 issue of *College Composition and Communication*, our profession's continuing tendency to focus primarily on print literacy limits our understanding of rhetoric, discourages students from "identify[ing] their own communication needs" and needlessly limits individuals who have developed expressive identities in a digital age ("The Movement of Air, The Breath of Meaning: Aurality and Multimodal Composing" in *CCC*, June 2009, 618). By widening the possibilities for composing in their classrooms, instructors may establish more compelling and inclusive learning environments for students of diverse races and cultures, language backgrounds, ages, and communication interests. Teachers also may create classes that can better serve the needs of students learning differences, e.g., in the areas of vision, hearing, or attention. Along with the potential advantages of incorporating multiple modes of composing into their curricula, instructors may well experience challenges that can obstruct curricular change or dampen enthusiasm of both instructors and students. Integrating new technologies into classes sometimes creates unwanted hurdles. Access to technology and digital literacies can sometimes encumber students. Instructors may experience new technologies as more burdensome than beneficial, especially when faculty are not rewarded for integrating new communication technologies into their curricula. In addition, educational institutions are increasingly demanding that digital texts and multimodal composing options be integrated into their curricula--sometimes before they have acquired the funds or the staff to support these efforts. We already know that we are experiencing a major transformation in communications that is permeating both our daily lives and our institutional realities. Most of us are struggling to develop our own expertise in multimodal composing while simultaneously teaching others to compose in digital environments. We encourage prospective authors to consider both opportunities and challenges associated with teaching/learning multimodal composing. We hope to receive submissions that focus on one (or more than one) of these roles/ perspectives: writer, student, teacher, tutor, program administrator. We also welcome reviews of books & web sites that enhance instructors' knowledge of teaching with new technologies OR that facilitate adult learners' expertise in multimodal composing. Finally, since basic writing instruction is moving into new venues (e.g., as test-preparation courses in for-profit companies or in adult education programs), we welcome submissions that explore uses of multimodal composing in a variety of institutional environments. *Technical Guidelines for Submissions: * * * 1. All submissions must be sent electronically to bwespecialissue(a)gmail.com 2. Use MLA style. 3. Acceptable submission formats include: MS Word or other word processing formats, web texts, and texts that include embedded multimedia elements. Images may be in .jpg, .gif, or .png format. Videos must be submitted as files, not as links to external sites. 4. Links to external sites may appear as in-text references or in a works cited list only. Web-based examples used to illustrate key ideas or arguments should be included in the text as embedded images, screen captures, video files, etc. Multimedia content hosted at an external site should be submitted as a file that can be hosted on the *BWe* server. 5. Submissions should be original work. Submissions containing work published or created by other authors must include their consent and/or follow fair use guidelines. 7. Submissions should be accessible in current versions of different browsers (e.g., Safari, Firefox, Internet Explorer, Google Chrome). 8. To ensure accessibility, a script or summary must accompany all multimedia submissions and/or video and audio content embedded in a manuscript. *Manuscript Submission Deadline*: November 15, 2010 *Email inquiries to Barbara Gleason *at bgleason(a)ccny.cuny.edu. *Submit manuscripts *to bwespecialissue(a)gmail.com ----------------------------------------------- Report list problems to listmom(a)interversity.org Archive User: techrhet / pw: blogeater

Does anyone know of research and/or evidence regarding the customized sale of surveillance and/or censorship technology to repressive regimes? I've been working on the corporate responsibility issues regarding the Nokia monitoring centers in Iran (Holding Nokia Responsible for Surveilling Dissidents in Iran: http://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2010/10/saharkhiz-v-nokia) and am looking for further examples (such as in http://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2010/01/selling-china-surveillance) I'm looking for particular examples of information and communication technologies especially.
