This conference, the first of its kind in the UK, will focus on the growing field of Latin American cyberculture, including literary blogs, digital storytelling, digital poetry, hypertext novels, hypermedia fiction, net.art, and online performance art, amongst others, and aims to explore analytical and theoretical approaches to these new media works. Combining presentations by practitioners and scholars alike, the conference aims to provide an important counterpart to the Anglophone-dominated arena of cybercultural studies, and will include workshops on hypermedia narrative and digital poetry, as well as the opportunity to reflect on research-led teaching in digital media. All, I was hoping to get some advice for the best way (cheapest) to maintain mobile phone access while in Europe for AoIR. I have an old Razr (waiting for Verizon to get the iPhone since my ATT reception sucks at my house). I seem to recall you can get a different sim card or upgrade your service for while, but was thinking of picking up a disposable mobile or maybe buying minutes with an access card. Having contributed to the dialogue about the ever increasing potential or online video through five international events since 2007, the publication of the Video Vortex Reader and the current production of a second one, the Institute of Network Cultures will host Video Vortex #6 on March 11-12, 2011. Now that professional advertising campaigns seek that ‘raw’ amateur look, and the amateur experimentation tries to produce high quality produced work, what should professional education in this field be aimed at? - Art and Activism What are the political and artistic strategies of online video? Are there powerful platforms available for videos in the realm of art and activism? How do artists and activists deal with and reflect on the nature of online video, with its guerrilla, amateur, viral, remix and lo-fi characteristics? How is online video being used as a (grassroots) political tool, and conversely the ways in which authoritative powers understand and use video against activist actions? What are the new ways of launching political content effectively when everything aims to be viral? And where is the radical and artistic answer to TED Talks? - Big Players and the Politics of Appropriation Who are the big players in the world of online video? How are corporations and governments using online video? What kind of guerrilla marketing strategies are companies adopting, appropriating amateur aesthetics and making use of the possibilities of online video for its easily viral nature? How are cinema and television companies dealing with the large-scale use of online and mobile video? And how to respond to the rise of 'national webs' and the new enclosures of the cable/telecom packages and TV set-top boxes? - Platforms, Standards and the Trouble with Translation This theme seeks to draw forth experts who will offer strong interventions regarding various platforms and channels proliferating on the internet that contribute to the ecology and culture of online video. These include, but are not limited to: Skype, streaming video technologies, Foursquare, Seesmic, Qik video, Netflix, immediate news channels online etc. The theme focuses on the problem of the translations across platforms that arise to due to conflicts in standards. The geo-cultural, and often the national, limits to open sharing of online content are also significant. How do users and producers get around the limits of these borders? How do they work under the radar or tunnel through the firewall in the face of censorship and content control? Human Resource Management (HRM) plays an equal, if not more important, role in building and sharing the right set of employee competencies that help organizations to successfully compete. In many organizations, Human Resource (HR) executives and KM experts have found that developing an IT infrastructure that allows the free exchange of employee experience and expertise has increased the company's competitiveness. Many companies are now aware that timely capturing their employees collective knowledge is the only way to preserve their investments in human capital. As a result, some of them have invested to develop a corporate culture of sharing knowledge and experience, capable of convincing employees to share their expertise. However, how to enable synergy between KM and HRM to foster open innovation is still a relatively new issue. Traditionally, innovation has been seen as the responsibility of a R&D team or of a business unit. Recent experience has shown that innovation is largely dependent on creative individuals working in an environment that spans multiple organizations and includes, beyond regular employees, consultants and suppliers. Knowledge-supported HR can play a key role in attracting and keeping the most innovative people and partners, creating a culture that supports innovation. This workshop objective is twofold. The first goal is to provide a forum to discuss theoretical models and practical evidence on the effectiveness of knowledge-supported HRM. The second goal is to investigate the connection between the implementation of knowledge-supported HR and the degree of open and employee-driven innovation achieved by organizations. Daniel (Prof Miller) - I found this a very interesting concept. 'multimedia' is so yesterday. I had a slight twitch with polymedia - and apologies if other Australians have already responded - As you may be aware, Australians are fond of the odd abbreviation, and we often use the word 'pollie' to mean politicians. Polymedia smacked to me of what we have been delivered, via multiple platforms on the latest Australian election! Which went into a hung parliament and was even more excruciating than usual ;-) I am actually fond of the word, 'omnimedia' - if only Martha Stewart hadn't claimed it first! For me, it means not only omnipresent, but also omnipotent, which rbings another element into the picture. The omnipotence of what people hear on the media was part of my recent paper about the sudden bee deaths. Even though there is no evidence per Einstein scholars, people persist in attributing to Einstein the quote about about "I know not what WWIII will be fought with, but WWIV will be fought with sticks and stones." Online learning environments

Hello everyone: I've been reading this list for awhile, and this is my first time posting. I'm looking to find information on online learning environments, whether they be connected to universities or standalone, not-for-profit or otherwise. Hoping to collect information on the key players in this space - thought this could be a good resource to turn to. Recently found ConceptArt.org, and am interested in similar community-focused sites combining a mix of tutorials, videos, collaborative tools, job boards, etc. Any insight would be incredibly appreciated. recording and transcribing

After testing, we strongly preferred Olympus DM voice recorders to iPhone even with the external mike. Olympus comes with apps that make it more optimal, such as not recording silences (assuming you're an ethnomethodologist). You can buy a quite cheap Olympus or spend a bit more money. IF you have the money, do it for clarity, apps. If it is your diss or major project, this is NOT where I would save money. I got talked out of using external mikes this time, and feel it was a mistake. Mike would have helped clarity. Clarity is really important for speed of transcription -- the real killer -- and for keeping whoever is transcribing (including yourself) happy. For transcribing, you can buy footpedals or you can install freeware which provides short cut keys. (Please don't ask me for brand names because a collaborator installed all this.)
