CFP for Special Training Issue of the Journal of Rhetoric, Professional Communication and Globalization
by Pam Brewer 06 Oct '10

06 Oct '10

Dear Colleagues-- Please forgive cross-postings. We cordially remind you to consider submitting proposals for researched papers or best practices pieces in a special issue of JPCG entitled "Navigating the Global Training Terrain: New Literacies, Competencies, and Practices." This issue, to be published in fall 2011, will focus on training in global contexts from the perspective of both those who train and those who learn. We seek submissions from a variety of perspectives including business, science, humanitarian practice, health, social advocacy, education, and government. Proposals can be up to 500 words and should be submitted on or before October 10, 2010. We have included specific dates in the publishing cycle in the CFP copied below. Please feel free to share this CFP with others who may be interested. We hope that this special issue will represent academic and practitioner perspectives as well as multiple disciplines. If you have any questions, please email me at brewerpe(a)appstate.edu <mailto:brewerpe@appstate.edu>. Best! Pam -- Pamela Estes Brewer Assistant Professor Director, Writing and Editing Internships Department of English Appalachian State University Manager, STC Academic Special Interest Group phone 828-262-2351 fax 828-262-2133 email brewerpe(a)appstate.edu <mailto:brewerpe@appstate.edu> *Call for Papers: Special Issue* *Navigating the Global Training Terrain: New Literacies, Competencies, and Practices *(to be published in September/the Fall of 2011) The twenty-first century has been characterized by rapid transformation—technological, social, cultural, environmental, economic, and scientific. In this changing milieu, organizations and individuals must continually acquire new knowledge and abilities or be left behind. Influential entities such as the United Nations strongly advocate the pursuit of lifelong learning for individuals, while leading companies, government agencies, and non-governmental organizations seek to become what scholars such as Peter Senge have called “learning organizations” that can transform themselves through the learning of their members at all levels. Training, or the structured development of skills, competencies, and up-to-date knowledge, is an increasingly important element in these pursuits. The shape of training may vary—formal or informal, face-to-face or technologically mediated, short-term or long-term—but the end purpose is always the same: to facilitate learning by individuals or groups, usually with the larger purpose of enhancing organizational quality. Training is vital to the success of globally connected organizations and individuals, but success requires the trainers’ effective bridging of linguistic, cultural, and social distances. Only teams and individuals with facility in navigating diverse languages, cultures, technologies, educational practices, and rhetorical traditions will be able to successfully provide training to global audiences. Professional communicators, whose discipline claims expertise in several areas relevant to training—including oral, written, and visual rhetoric, usability, information architecture, electronic collaboration, intercultural communication, and collaboration with translators—are well positioned to contribute to global training efforts or take on the role of trainers themselves. Yet, despite these advantages, the pool of research on training in global audiences is limited, especially within the field of professional communication. This special issue of the /Journal of Rhetoric, Professional Communication, and Globalization/ seeks to address this need by providing a space for scholarly research and best practices on the topic of global, organizational training. The issue, entitled *Navigating the Global Training Terrain: New Literacies, Competencies, and Practices *will focus on training in global contexts from the perspective of both those who train and those who learn, including current research and best practices. The special issue will also cast an eye toward organizational training as it is evolving towards the future. The editors of the special issue welcome submissions from a variety of perspectives including business, science, humanitarian practice, health, social advocacy, education, and government. Possible topics pertaining to the theory, teaching, and practice of training in global contexts include the following, among others: · Intercultural considerations in the design and delivery of training · Training and the social web · Cultural intelligence for trainers and training audiences · Language use and translation in training contexts · Meta-communication and training · Communities of practice · Legal issues in global training · Economic aspects of global training · Assessment of global training · Training from a distance Proposals (up to 500 words) for research papers, short best practices pieces*, and tutorials are due by October 10^th , 2010. Review criteria can be found on the Journal’s website at *www.rpcg.org*. Proposals should be sent as an email attachment to one of the guest editors of the special issue: Pam Brewer, Appalachian State University: *brewerpe(a)appstate.edu* Jim Melton, Central Michigan University: *james.melton(a)cmich.edu* Joo-Seng Tan, Nanyang Technological University: *ajstan(a)ntu.edu.sg* * We strongly encourage practitioners to submit best practices pieces on any of the topics identified in this CFP or on related topics. Best practices describe the training strategies, approaches, or methods that work in a particular situation or environment. What has worked and why? What has not worked so well, and what could work better? Authors may use the following optional framework for best practices pieces: title, description, methods used, results, technologies used, and lessons learned. While the proposal and review process is the same for research papers, tutorials, and best practices pieces, final manuscripts for best practices should be shorter: approximately 1000 to 3000 words in length. *Production Schedule *The schedule for the special issue is as follows: 10 October 2010 -- 500-word proposals due 15 October 2010 – Guest editors return proposal decisions to submitters 10 January 2011 – Draft manuscripts of accepted proposals due 1 July 2011 -- Final manuscripts due September 2011 -- Publication date of special issue *About the Journal *The /Journal of Rhetoric, Professional Communication and Globalization/ publishes articles on the theory, practice, and teaching of technical and professional communication in critical global and intercultural contexts such as business, manufacturing, environment, information technology, and others. As a global initiative, the Journal welcomes manuscripts with diverse approaches and contexts of research, but manuscripts are to be submitted in English and grounded in relevant theory and appropriate research methods. The Journal is peer reviewed with an editorial board consisting of experienced researchers and practitioners from over 20 countries. ** The Journal is free or “open access,” using PKP open source software and housed at East Carolina University. The first edition is planned for September 2010, and it will be published thereafter on a quarterly basis. For more information, see *www.rpcg.org.*

CFP: Learning Analytics Conference: submissions by Nov 1, 2010
by Caroline Haythornthwaite 05 Oct '10

05 Oct '10

Please forward as appropriate. /Caroline ------------------ Call for Papers 1st International Conference Learning Analytics & Knowledge February 27-March 1, 2011, Banff, Alberta, Canada https://tekri.athabascau.ca/analytics/ Sponsored by Athabasca University (Canada) and University of Queensland (Australia) In partnership with EDUCAUSE Publication of accepted conference papers in Springer's LNCS volume (pending approval) A special issue in a leading international journal planned. Facebook group: http://www.facebook.com/#!/group.php?gid=143068632401312 LinkedIn group: http://www.linkedin.com/groups? about=&gid=3392364&trk=anet_ug_grppro LinkedIn event: http://events.linkedin.com/1st-International-Conference- Learning/pub/420070 TEL Europe :http://www.teleurope.eu/pg/groups/46191/1st-international-conference- on-learning-analytics-and-knowledge/ Scope The growth of data surpasses the ability of organizations to make sense of it. This concern is particularly pronounced in relation to knowledge, teaching, and learning. Learning institutions and corporations make little use of the data learners "throw off" in the process of accessing learning materials, interacting with educators and peers, and creating new content. In an age where educational institutions are under growing pressure to reduce costs and increase efficiency, analytics promises to be an important lens through which to view and plan for change at course and institutions levels. Corporations face pressure for increased competitiveness and productivity, a challenge that requires important contributions in organizational capacity building from work place and informal learning. Learning analytics can play a role in highlighting the development of employees through their learning activities. In enterprise settings, information flow and social interactions can yield novel insights into organizational effectiveness and capacity to address new challenges or adapt rapidly when unanticipated event arise. Thirdly, as we witness the expansion of learning and knowledge work beyond formal institutional boundaries, myriad platforms in the cloud hosting the activity of individuals will be providing/exchanging analytics. Advances in knowledge modeling and representation, the semantic web, data mining, analytics, and open data form a foundation for new models of knowledge development and analysis. The technical complexity of this nascent field is paralleled by a transition within the full spectrum of learning (education, work place learning, informal learning) to social, networked learning. These technical, pedagogical, and social domains must be brought into dialogue with each other to ensure that interventions and organizational systems serve the needs of all stakeholders. Learning Analytics 2011 will focus on integrating the technical and the social/pedagogical dimensions of learning analytics. Topics Learning analytics is the measurement, collection, analysis and reporting of data about learners and their contexts, for purposes of understanding and optimising learning and the environments in which it occurs. Conference organizers are seeking submissions that cover various topics related to learning analytics including (but not limited to): Technical * Software development and use in analytics * The role of knowledge representation and ontologies in learning analytics * The semantic web and linked data: meaning in connections * Data mining in learning analytics * Artificial intelligence in learning analytics * Internet of things (sensors) and learning applications * "Big Data" applications and opportunities in learning and education * Latent semantic analysis/natural language processing * Attention metadata * Architecture of learning environments and implications to learning analytics * Software needed to advance learning analytics as a field Application * Visualization: data, learner networks, conceptual knowledge * Predictive applications of data * Interventions based on analytics * Social and technical systems to manage information abundance * Personalization and adaptivity in the learning process * Corporate and higher education case studies of learning analytics * Learning analytics for intelligent tutoring systems * Open data: data access for learners * Harmonizing individual learning with organizational learning * Importing insights for existing analytics * Use of learning analytics in centralized (learning management systems) and decentralized (personal learning environments) settings Conceptual & Pedagogical * The relationship between learning analytics and existing theories and approaches (such as pedagogical models and learning sciences) * Social network analysis * Cognitive modelling * Harnessing the power of context and location aware systems * Informal learning: integrating learning and knowledge systems * Privacy & ethics in learning analytics * The influence of analytics on designing for learning * The influence of analytics on delivery and support of learning Paper Categories The following types of original papers are solicited: * Research papers: These should report a substantial research contribution to learning analytics or the application of analytics. Full paper submissions should not exceed 20 pages. * Vision or conceptual papers: These may describe interesting, visionary, or thought-provoking concepts that are not yet fully developed or evaluated, make an initial contribution to challenging research issues in learning analytics. These papers should not exceed 10 pages. * Mini-tutorial papers: Learning analytics is a young field of research with contributions from technical, social, and pedagogical domains. As such, there is a need for illustrations, examples, and cross-discipline discussion to unite these domains. Mini-tutorials are solicited that provide discussion points for mapping common ideas between related and complementary research topics of learning analytics. A mini-tutorial submission should be between 15 and 20 pages. * Tool demonstration papers: Learning analytics focuses on new technologies and tools. As a result, we seek papers that present software tools related to the field of learning analytics. These papers will accompany a tool demonstration to be given at the conference. These papers must not exceed 10 pages. The selection criteria include the originality of the tool, its innovative aspects, the relevance of the tool to learning analytics, and the maturity of the tool. *Digital/Media, Race, Affect and Labor* *Location: Bowling Green State University, Bowling Green, Ohio, USA* *Dates of the meetings: April 14,15 and 16, 2011* *Deadline for submission: December 10th 2010* We are soliciting paper proposals for a three day conference on Digital/Media, Race, Affect and Labor, to be hosted by the American Culture Studies Program at Bowling Green State University. Dr. Anna Everett, Professor of Film, Television and New Media Studies, and former Chair of the Department of Film and Media Studies at the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB) has agreed to be our keynote speaker. We hope this topic will elicit productive discussions and collaborations that bring together the layered and crisscrossing themes associated with media, digital worlds, labor, affect, globalization, and race. We invite abstracts that look at mediated environments (broadly defined) in a contemporary or historical context. Prospective participants are encouraged to engage with specific conceptual relationships that connect with the theme of this conference and explore them in any available online or offline setting. Thus in the case of digital media and affect related research, one might ask such questions as: How does desire for the Other play out in global/local and online/offline intersections? How does affect work in on-line networks and digital assemblages? What are the affective regimes of on-line sociality? What kind of perceptions, sensations, affective movements and public feelings emerge in our highly mediated and digitized environments? In the case of Race and media, one might examine representations of raced bodies, shifting conceptualizations of race across space, place and time, race in cyberspace, racialized labor and so on. Historical mappings of race, caste, class and gender as well as historical contextualization of media forms reveal complex and nuanced understandings of how digital economies are shaped in relation to globalization are encouraged. In investigating Affect and Labor in relation to globalization and digitally mediated worlds, one might ask what sorts of socio-economic formations emerge online and offline? How do we make sense of so-called voluntary networks of non-profit activities and social entrepreneurship online? How do notions of neoliberal governmentality shape emerging labor forces? What are the global and local implications of how we labor and work and play in digitally mediated environments? Please submit abstracts of approximately 400 words to * raceandaffect(a)gmail.com *no later than December 10th, 2010*. *Please be sure to include your name, paper title, institutional affiliation (if applicable), email address, A-V equipment requests, and special needs, if any. Fwd: AAUP Member NL: Survey on Contingent Faculty

forward as appropriate -jh apologies the urls below were fail:( so i googled and found: http://www.academicworkforce.org/ and the survey is at: http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/VNNNRVS > > > We all know that more and more faculty members are hired off the tenure track, in contingent appointments of various kinds. But no good data exist on these appointments. That’s why the American Association of University Professors and other organizations in the Coalition on the Academic Workforce are conducting a survey.(http://lyris.eresources.com:81/t/5289222/4913970/1967/0/ You can help by filling out the survey if you are eligible or by forwarding this e-mail as widely as possible to faculty on your campus and beyond. > > The Coalition on the Academic Workforce invites all members of the contingent academic workforce in U.S. colleges and universities to participate in this survey.(http://lyris.eresources.com:81/t/5289222/4913970/1967/0/ It inquires about course assignments, salaries, benefits, and general working conditions as members of the contingent academic workforce experience them at the institutional level. We invite participation from all instructional and research staff members employed off the tenure track, including faculty members employed either full- or part-time, graduate students remunerated as teaching assistants or employed in other roles, and researchers and post-doctoral fellows. > > Most of the data on the working conditions of the contingent academic workforce—particularly data about salaries, benefits, and course assignments—exist in large data sets that have been aggregated and averaged at the national level. Consequently, the similarities and differences that contingent academic workers experience across different institutions and institutional sectors, geographic regions, and disciplines become obscured. This survey aims to examine salaries, benefits, course assignments, and general working conditions as contingent academic workers experience them at the institutional level. The survey will collect institution- and course-specific information to create a more textured and realistic picture of contingent academic workers’ working lives and working conditions. > > We hope that sufficient numbers of respondents will complete this survey to permit developing a rich dataset that will help CAW and its member organizations advocate on behalf of professional compensation and working conditions for the contingent academic workforce. To that end, we deeply appreciate the time and effort given by all who fill out this survey. > > Individuals who wish to be entered in a drawing for one of several $50 book gift cards may include contact information at the end of the questionnaire, but this information will not be used to connect survey data with specific persons. > > We hope you will fill out the questionnaire (http://lyris.eresources.com:81/t/5289222/4913970/1967/0/ today, but if you cannot, please do so by November 30, 2010.
