Re: [Air-L] Looking at job postings: Any advice?
by Tuszynski, Stephanie 30 Sep '10

Christine - There are a number of websites where jobs are posted. The biggest are the Chronicle of Higher Education jobs page http://chronicle.com/section/Jobs/61/ And Higher Ed Jobs http://www.higheredjobs.com/ There are a number of others, and many listservs like this one are used to post job listings as well. >From my own experience being in your shoes, schools are willing to consider someone who is ABD if they are confident of finishing the degree on time and if the candidate seems enthusiastic. I also would suspect teaching experience as a graduate student is hugely important, but my experience at Bethany is unique in that teaching is really the only thing that matters here. I do remember that being able to present teaching evaluations when I was still ABD was a big help. I would apply for any job that you feel you can do - any communication job where you feel you know the classes the department would likely as you to teach (which you can usually guess by looking at the institution's course catalog and also the published schedules if you can find them - look at what's offered regularly. Newbies often teach the lower level courses the standing faculty are tired of dealing with. ;) Jobs also come in waves. This point in the year usually the jobs are mostly tenure-track, the planned hiring for next year. In March/April will come another wave, including more visiting and instructor positions that will probably be more within your reach as ABD, where the institution needs a warm body to fill a space for the fall. Always stress your teaching in your letters, research the institution and the faculty thoroughly before you even write the letter, and be enthusiastic. Hope that helps Dr. Stephanie Tuszynski Assistant Professor of Communication Bethany College Message: 10 Date: Thu, 30 Sep 2010 18:54:45 +1300 From: Christine Daviault <davch159(a)student.otago.ac.nz> To: air-l(a)listserv.aoir.org Subject: [Air-L] Looking at job postings: Any advice? So let me ask you all the following question: What would be your advice for a PhD candidate starting to look at job postings for next year? How can I find a position that fits or should I jump at any opportunity? How can I distinguish myself? What are universities looking for in general? Replies to Turkle's How Computers change the way we think
by Daniel Jung 30 Sep '10

30 Sep '10

Hi Just a very quick question: Is there a direct scholarly reply to Sherry Turkle: "How Computers change the way we think" (Chronicle of Higher Education: The Chronicle Review 2004)? I find a number of student papers online which mention the article, some blogposts, but no 1:1 reply or academic debate directly following the article. Does anyone know anything? Thanks very much - Daniel Jung

Schedule for IR11
by Mathias Klang 30 Sep '10

30 Sep '10

Hi, Apologies for cross-posting Just a short mail to let you all know that the full (but preliminary) conference program is now available online. At present the schedule consists of a shorter overview (3 pages) and a full program (25 pages). There are links from the conference site but the direct links to the documents are http://techrisk.se/wp-content/uploads/aoir/Full_overview.pdf for the overview and http://techrisk.se/wp-content/uploads/aoir/Fullprogram.pdf for the full schedule. The documents are at present under my own domain (techrisk.se) since this was the quickest and most reliable way to go but copies will be deposited on the AOIR conference site asap. For those among you who tweet I want to remind you that the conference account is @ir_11, the hashtag is #ir11 (my own account is @klang67). Please let me know if there is anything odd about the documents or if there is anything you need to know about Göteborg, the conference or other stuff. Though my particular project has a strong intersection with internet and media studies issues, I chose to explore it via the discipline of Anthropology. While it can be difficult going at times, especially as aspects of the project don't sit comfortably within the traditionally drawn boundaries of the discipline, the advantages far outweigh the challenges. In terms of outcomes, I frankly don't expect that I'll work within an Anthropology department. But having the disciplinary training leaves that possibility open (as well as working in a number of other humanities/social sciences and digital humanities areas). The critical thing, should you choose to go down this path, is to do the due diligence. Be sure to thoroughly discuss your project with multiple faculty members at every department you apply to and get their opinions about how well it integrates with the current program (including the classes currently offered) and what you'll be expected to produce to graduate. - Matt ----------------------------- Matthew Bernius PhD Student | Cultural Anthropology | Cornell University | http://www.arts.cornell.edu/anthro/ Researcher At Large | Open Publishing Lab @ the Rochester Institute of Technology | http://opl.cias.rit.edu | @ritopl mBernius(a)gMail.com | http://www.waking-dream.com | @mattBernius

Tom Buchanan asks about aggression scales. I put together a short bib a couple of years ago, most of it about aggression and gaming and/or verbal aggression. Many of the references contain or refer to measurement instruments. At the very least, it should get you started. See below. I am specifically interested in something that will allow one to measure aggressive / angry affect. I'm aware of work that's been done using measures of anxiety, depression, general positive and negative mood - but nothing specifically related to aggression. I have considered using Bond-Lader type visual analogue scales, but I'd prefer something that can be administered in a Likert-type format in an online questionnaire. Thanks in advance for any clues... Digital Anthropology

I should also add that we are in the second year of a Digital Anthropology MSc at the Department of Anthropology at University College London. As it happens this is turning out as almost too successful since we are tying to keep the numbers below 20 and today as the first day of term it looks like we are ending up with rather more than that. We are a very research active department with around 130 PhD students including several with topics in this field. For more information see - http://www.ucl.ac.uk/anthropology/digital-anthropology/index.htm Daniel Miller
