Non-Code-Centric Texts in Introductions To Computer Science?
by Seda Guerses 28 Sep '10

dear peter, i have a germany-centric response to your question, i hope it is not too narrow in scope. the year i started studying computer science, university of bremen introduced a summer school called informatica feminale, which had the intention of providing an alternative computer science curricula to women in computing. the "alternative" in my opinion referred to two things: a) to a women's space in which the gender roles are for a moment shifted (all the participants, i.e., instructors, organizers, and students are women, at the time women made up 4-7% of cs students in germany) and b) to providing a background similar to that which you are searching, with a feminist twist. i looked at the program for this year and have to admit that the curricula has swayed into a training program/career planning help, but the curricula of the prior years give some insihgt into some of the aspirations of the summer school in the beginning of the 00s. for example, see the link to the colloquim: http://www.informatica-feminale.de/Sommerstudium/Sommer2001/Liste_Ringvorle… or, simply check older curricula here: http://www.informatica-feminale.de/Sommerstudium/index.html with our little group back then, i remember reading and discussing much around alan turing, his life, his construction of the turing test (can the machine fake a "man" or a "woman" in the immitation game? can the machine fake a human? replacing the question: can the machine think? see here the original article: http://www.loebner.net/Prizef/TuringArticle.html) and its significance for computer science. this also was accompanied by a historical conception of the computer as a machine, a tool and later as media. here we were relying on the work of heidi schelhowe who was inspired by carl adam petri and worked together with friedrich nake. see for example (unfortunately in german): SCHELHOWE, H., F. NAKE (1994). "Der Computer als instrumentales Medium". In: F. Nake (Hrsg.): Zeichen und Gebrauchswert. Beiträge zur Maschinisierung von Kopfarbeit. Universität Bremen, FB Mathematik/ Informatik, Bericht Nr. 6/94 (1994). 15-28 in germany, the "alternative" curriculum is covered by a sub- department within computer science traditionally called "informatik und gesellschaft". the old school informatik und gesellschaft professors have come up with great topics, again i propose looking at the works of friedrich nake, wolfgang coy, heidi schelhowe, britta schinzel, bernd lutterbeck, and many more. i hope that you also find some of their texts in english. here is one i found by wolfgang coy on "defining a discipline": http://waste.informatik.hu-berlin.de/coy/Coy_Defining_Discipline.html it will be a pitty if the critical initiative of these professors get lost now that they are slowly retiring. :) i certainly miss their presence in belgium, where the computer science tradition has no equivalebt sub-discipline. s. Researchers in the privacy field
by Emily Christofides 28 Sep '10

28 Sep '10

Hi all, I am writing because I hope to tap into your collective knowledge and networks related to privacy research. I am a doctoral candidate in psychology and have been researching the theoretical aspects of privacy, as well as other topics related to the social effects of new media. If you or anyone you know is doing work related to privacy (psychologists as well as scholars from other disciplines) I would love to hear what you're doing. Because this is such an interdisciplinary field it can sometimes be difficult to know where to look for the most current research. Many thanks, Emily __________________________________ Emily Christofides PhD Candidate, Applied Social Psychology University of Guelph

Perhaps I'm missing something (it happens to me frequently) but when I go to the Registration tab on the IR 11.0 website the page says, "Registration...is now open and can be accessed here." But there is no link! Just where is the "here" to which this page refers??? -- Mark D. Non-Code-Centric Texts in Introductions To Computer Science?
by Pete[r] Landwehr 28 Sep '10

Hey list, I have an open ended question for this list that is intended to be a bit selfish and (hopefully) a bit beneficial for everyone else. Recently, I read Weizenbaum's Computing Power And Human Reason, in which he makes arguments about the things that AI should & shouldn't address. (It's a bit dated.) In it, he makes a point that because he is trained as a computer scientist he considers himself a poorly educated entrant to the debate, & later suggests that an introduction to computer science should be more than an introduction to programming, but also into some of the theory behind the field. (By "theory", I mean the conceptual ideas behind computing, not discrete mathematics.) As a computer scientist whose introduction to computer science was essentially an introduction to programming along with some key algorithms in the field and a few good software engineering practices, I found his argument appealing. As such, I'd like to ask the list -both computer scientists and non- what (if any) texts would you like undergraduate computer scientists to be exposed to that are _not_ solely focused on good practices in C++/Java/<Language of Choice> programming? Baudrillard's Simulacra And Simulations? Lessig's Code v. 2? Simon's The Sciences Of The Artificial? Some linguistics text by Chomsky? Or is this whole idea dumb & everything is totally hunky-dory? Best, pml

Hi Pete, I'm trying to do something like this on a broader or more general scale, aimed at faculty-staff development across the university, with a Networked New Media Faculty-Staff Development Seminar. Principal information here: http://gardnercampbell.wetpaint.com/page/Baylor_NMFS_F10. The portal aggregating network-wide content (primarily blogs) is here: http://www.netvibes.com/gardnercampbell#NMFS_F10. Our text is primarily "The New Media Reader" (MIT 2003). Had I world enough and time, I'd add many more essays from the NMR, Howard Rheingold's "Tools for Thought," and perhaps Bardini's "Bootstrapping" to the mix. Canada 2009 Statistics E-commerce: Shopping on the Internet /Commerce électronique : magasinage sur Internet
by Peter Timusk 27 Sep '10

27 Sep '10

My coworkers released this data today. See the bottom of these web pages for the survey managers e-mail address for ordering customs tables from the survey. In English http://www.statcan.gc.ca/daily-quotidien/100927/dq100927a-eng.htm E-commerce: Shopping on the Internet 2009 (Previous release <http://www.statcan.gc.ca/daily-quotidien/081117/dq081117a-eng.htm> ) Canadians used the Internet in 2009 to place orders for goods and services valued at $15.1 billion, up from $12.8 billion in 2007. The increase resulted from more online shoppers and a higher volume of orders. Peter Timusk at571(a)ncf.ca ptimusk(a)sympatico.ca web: www.crystalcomputing.net blogs www.cyborgcitizen.org
