Special JeDEM Issue on eParticipation
by Alfred Hermida 23 Sep '10

23 Sep '10

Hi all I thought this might be of interest. (Full disclosure, I have a paper on the BBC's attempts to set up an online civic commons in this issue) The Special Issue on eParticipation of JeDEM - the Journal of eDemocracy and Open Goverment - has just been published. This issue summarises existing evidence and introduces some authoritative viewpoints on a theme that is gaining relevance and furthering discussion among theorists and practitioners alike. It can be found here: http://www.jedem.org/issue/view/3 JeDEM aims to bridge innovative, insightful and stimulating research, testing and findings with practice and the work conducted by governments, NPOs, NGOs and professionals. The journal is a peer-reviewed, open-access journal, with papers available under a Creative Commons license. by Jennifer Whitson 23 Sep '10

Hi All, I was wondering if anyone knew the origins of the phrase "social graph". Despite Wikipedia's claims, I doubt that Mark Zuckerberg coined the term in May 2007. Just a hunch. Thanks, Jennifer R. Whitson PhD Candidate Department of Sociology and Anthropology Carleton University

Google scholar comes up with 14 uses of the term "social media" before 1920 and this one look as fairly relevant to current usage. It is fairly general in terms of oral and written traditions where we have just added the digital form of those communication forms. [BOOK] The function of socialization in social evolution google.com [HTML]EW Burgess - 1916 - books.google.com ... socialization. Word of mouth and oral tradition, the written manuscript and the printed book, the church and the school constitute the social media in which the achievement of one generation becomes the social heritage of the next. ... Hi Davide; A couple more good markers of the appearance of terms related to social media might be the following: Using collaborative filtering to weave an information tapestry (1992) http://en.scientificcommons.org/42270400 Social Information Filtering: Algorithms for Automating "Word of Mouth'' (1995) http://www.sigchi.org/chi95/proceedings/papers/us_bdy.htm Regards, Neal Thomas PhD Candidate, Art History & Communication Studies McGill University
