"If pictures of you naked end up on an internet site"....

Interesting story ran today on the CBC (Canadian Broadcasting Corporation) news site about naked pictures of a Canadian Judge that appeared online, that cites the learned opinion and judgment of the whole unfortunate event passed by the Dean of Law at a major Canadian University as follows: ³"If pictures of you naked end up on an internet site, it's quite difficult to say you have the credibility to be a judge," said Sébastien Grammond, dean of civil law at the University of Ottawa. Grammond said a judge ultimately represents the ideal of justice and therefore the judge's conduct and image reflect on the justice system as a whole. The judge is, in a sense, the embodiment of the justice system, something the Supreme Court has noted in a past judgment.² So Dean Grammond explicitly (a) decouples responsibility for the act of posting an image of a naked person (of a woman) on the net with the person (her husband) posting that image while simultaneously, (b) links culpability for the simple act of representation itself as it were with the person represented in that image... For the first time in, well, ever I've been asked by a journal to obtain permission from a website to reproduce a screenshot of a webpage. Not, to be clear, of an image on the page - but of the page itself. I've been offered the option of removing the image and replacing it with a URL, but from an archival standpoint that's problematic. Webpages with dynamic content change all the time, not to mention that authors sometimes change formats/platforms, modify pages, or remove content that was included in the original analysis. I don't want to miss the publishing deadline, but I need to know: "where dey do dat at?!?" (translation: since when did fair use guidelines get bent so badly in academic publishing?) The integration of low-cost pervasive and personal technology in the form of mobile devices and augmented reality into our everyday life starts to change our expectations about how to perceive the world around us. We are now able to leave traces of our emotional or intellectual experience as virtual attachments to any location. As a result we expect that any place, indoors or outdoors, reveals itself to us by confronting us with connection, context, and uncommon perspectives. Yet, any exploration is in itself an experience and so we desire that the revelation is compelling and enjoyable on an individual and group level. We expect to experience the world around us as a continuous, flexible, and networked exchange of ideas that are routed in where and who we are and how these intrinsic facets of our experience are connected to those of others. For this special issue we solicit novel papers describing approaches in digital storytelling that address the challenges posed by real world environments experienced through mobile devices. We look for work solutions for redefining our understanding of narrative structure and theory through interactivity in computer-generated story worlds that are tightly interwoven with the places we visit, the objects we touch, and the people we meet. online degree programs

http://sloanconsortium.org/members_list the members of the sloan consortium list universities and colleges with very active online degree programs. Most of these programs emphasize collaborative learning methodology. SUNY has like 50 campus and they have all been encouraged to develop online courses and a student is free to choose a course online at any of the 50 campuses. Hence different departments like philosophy are very strong on one campus and students can find a much wider range of courses in that topic then at the particular campus they are on. In a sense SUNY allows open competition among its campus Some other big online programs are at penn state and the university of illionis where you might find a school of education involved. The problem with fb-places seems to be a re-iteration of similar problems in the past (athough, I completely agree that location data is something else). for example tagged or commented photos, status updates with references, even wall-discussions are all information that through the fb design becomes information that can be controlled, managed, distributed by many profiles. We tried to generalize the problem, calling such information "relational information" since it is information related to many through the design of the system. We then used Thomas Erickson and Wendy Kellog's idea of social translucence: we asked how friends/communities could develop privacy practices based on social proxies in the design that provide some transparency as to what is happening in the network (without having to do what michael zimmer did when he checked what was visible of his profile through extra-mock profiles). unfortunately, the privacy settings of fb make users believe that they control their information individually. however, the design of fb is such that most info is entered, linked, controlled and distributed by many. this is a mismatch that one can only suspect might have been convenient for fb in the past, but hopefully not for too much longer. more information on the paper is here: The Social Web and Privacy: Practices, Reciprocity and Conflict Detection in Social Networks. http://www.cosic.esat.kuleuven.be/publications/article-1304.pdf and the wonderful article on social translucence is this one: Thomas Erickson and Wendy A.
