Call for participation: Workshop on Information Systems and Environmentally Sustainable Development http://csis.pace.edu/~dwyer/SIGGreen/default.htm Activities: Virtual Online Workshop: November 12, 2010 (Web site TBA) Pre-ICIS Workshop, Saint Louis, MO December 11, 2010 ICIS (http://icis2010.aisnet.org/) is the premier international conference for Information Systems. Theme: In the March 2010 issue of MISQ, Watson, Boudreau and Chenpresent a call to arms for information systems to address environmental sustainability. “Specifically, as IS researchers, educators, journal editors, and association leaders, we need to demonstrate how the transformative power of IS can be leveraged to create an ecologically sustainable society,” (p. 23). Inspiration for this program comes from the growing body of work published in this area by IS scholars, but particularly the Watson et al. paper is recommended reading for those intending to participate.The objective of this program of activities is to use the Watson et al. paper as a manifesto to generate directions and goals for the newly formed AIS special interest group SIGGreen (http://siggreen.wikispaces.com/) Participants in this workshop are encouraged to employ this paper as a guide for writing opinion pieces, critical overviews, calls for action, taxonomies, frameworks etc, for one or more of the various IS roles described in the paper (i.e., researcher, educator etc). We call for abstract (300-500 words) on any aspects of the Theme as indicated above. Note these should not be reports on specific research projects. Acceptance of abstracts will be determined by the chairs in consultation with an editorial panel and based on quality and relevance to the Theme and the aims of SIGGreen. UW-Milwaukee IMLS-Funding Opportunity for New PhD Students

The School of Information Studies (SOIS) at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee has recently been awarded an Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) Laura Bush 21 st Century Librarian Program grant to enhance library and information science education and to help develop library leaders. The SOIS grant program, entitled “Overcoming Barriers to Information Access (B2A): Educating the Next Generation of Library and Information Science Leaders,” addresses the need for new PhDs in SOIS’ three key areas of doctoral study: information organization , information policy and information retrieval . SOIS is currently seeking applications for six funded full-time doctoral positions under this grant program for fall 2011. Participants in the B2A program will receive three or four years of funding to cover tuition, a generous annual stipend/scholarship, research and teaching opportunities, resources to support their research and travel, and mentoring from SOIS faculty members during their studies. This may be of interest in the context of the discussion on e-Gov/Gov. 2.0 etc. It has been quite widely tweeted/blogged over the last couple of days. Mike Efforts to extend access to "data" will perhaps inevitably create a "data divide" parallel to the oft-discussed "digital divide" between those who have access to data which could have significance in their daily lives and those who don't. Associated with this will one can assume, be many of the same background conditions which have been identified as likely reasons for the digital divide-that is differences in income, education, literacy and so on. However, just as with the "digital divide", these divisions don't simply stop or be resolved with the provision of digital (or data) "access". CFP – Zombies in the Academy book anthology

Call for papers: book chapters for the interdisciplinary anthology “Zombies in the Academy: living death in higher education” Editors: Andrew Whelan, Chris Moore and Ruth Walker This book takes up the momentum provided by the recent resurgence of interest in zombie culture to explore the relevance of the zombie trope to discussions of scholarly practice itself. The zombie is an extraordinarily rich and evocative popular cultural form, and zombidity, zombification and necromancy can function as compelling elements in a conceptual repertoire for both explaining and critically ‘enlivening’ the debates around a broad variety of cultural and institutional phenomena evident in the contemporary university. We propose to canvas a range of critical accounts of the contemporary university as a living dead culture. We are therefore seeking interdisciplinary proposals for papers that investigate the political, cultural, organisational, and pedagogical state of the university, through applying the metaphor of zombiedom to both the form and content of professional academic work. We invite submissions from a range of scholars - notably in cultural and communication studies, but also popular culture, anthropology, sociology, film, game and literary studies, political science, philosophy and education - who would be prepared to submit chapters that examine the zombie trope and its relation to higher education from a variety of perspectives. The editors of “Zombies in the Academy” have an agreement for publication with Intellect Press UK for 2012. The anthology will be structured in three sections around the broad general topics of: 1. corporatisation, bureaucratisation, and zombification of higher education; 2. technology, digital media and moribund content distribution infecting the university; 3. zombie literacies and living dead pedagogies. Paper proposals that would fit into these sections would include essays that might: • investigate the current conditions of the academy under pressure from the ‘zombie processes’ variously described as ‘audit culture’ or the ‘McDonaldisation’ of higher education; • explore the uncanny value of the figure of the zombie as a component in critical pedagogical accounts (zombie concepts, undead labour in Marxist theory etc.), including in such accounts as they are applied to the university itself; • analyse the theme of zombies and the academic gaze through the narratives and mechanics of particular films, games, texts or graphic novels; • name the attenuated conditions of work in the sector with reference to its various forms of ‘zombidity’; • evaluate the perceived decomposition of academic standards; • discuss the zombie contagion model as an explanatory device for the circulation of content across multiple media platforms, including into and out of the classroom; • explore pedagogical activities that use or reflect zombie content; • critically investigate the rise of ‘zombie literacies’ - as an epidemic circulated by an unthinking student horde, and/or the undead ivory tower itself; • address the corpse like inertia and atavism of academic distinction and social closure (journal rankings, peer review, tenure etc.) in the face of the apparently ‘lifelike’ models of research production beyond the walls of the academy; • reassess the metaphor of zombiedom, considering how it can be construed not only as a negative critique, but also as a possibly desirable, advantageous or alternative adaptive strategy in academic contexts. Abstracts for proposed book chapters should be 1000 words. The Center for Digital Ethics & Policy (CDEP) in the School of Communication at Loyola University Chicago is looking for reviewers interested in contributing to our blog which will be launching in September 2010. CDEP is committed to facilitating a community-wide conversation regarding the ethical consequences of new media. To that end, we are creating a book review section for the web site, which will serve as a resource for academics, journalists, and practitioners. Reviews should be around 500-750 words, written for a general audience, and focus on the ethical implications of the reviewed text. We will provide a copy of the text and a small stipend ($50) for completed reviews. Revolution - http://socinfotech.pbworks.com/ - for WUAS credit, on Harvard's virtual island in Second Life starting this Saturday Sept. 11 from 11a - 1p PT. (This course could be a great opportunity for you, or a student of yours, to come into conversation about a paper you are writing, for example). World University is also planning to video-stream live a free UC Berkeley "Biological Anthropology" undergraduate class beginning in Jan. 2011 (probably on Tuesday and Thursday mornings PT), also for WUaS credit.
