The Big QR > City of New York Blankets Times Square With Giant QR Codes

To celebrate Internet Week 2010, the City of New York outfitted Times Square with giant QR codes earlier today. It’s called “The City at Your Fingerprints” and eleven New York agencies participated in the interactive billboard initiative. Times Square denizens could use their smartphone barcode scanning app to scan the QR codes — which were featured in an animated sequence on the Thomson Reuters building in Times Square from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. ET — and pull up information relating to specific agencies being featured. If so, this workshop is for you. For the past five years, the National Museum of Australia’s Centre for Historical Research and the Australian National University’s National Centre of Biography (incorporating the Australian Dictionary of Biography), School of History and Humanities Research Centre, have collaborated in hosting ‘Using Lives’, a week-long intensive residential workshop for postgraduates from around Australia, held in Canberra. ‘Using Lives’ for 2010 will run in the week beginning 13 September. Biography and ‘life writing’ figure increasingly in humanities and social science research. These approaches have expanded in accessibility and innovation by adapting to new technologies, exploring new materials and perspectives, and advancing new agendas. This workshop provides a forum in which postgraduate students can discuss aspects of this ‘biographical turn’ in relation to their work. Core objectives for the week are to: i) generate reflection and debate on issues of biographical enquiry; ii) develop networks to assist in research and professional development; iii) explore opportunities for the presentation of biographically-informed work The workshop consists of morning sessions, led by experts in areas related to these objectives, and afternoon sessions in which students present their research for discussion. The workshop is integrated with the Seymour Lecture in Biography at the National Library of Australia, this year to be given on 16 September by Frances Spalding. Attendance (including lunch and morning and afternoon refreshment) at the workshop is free of change for successful applicants, as is self-catering accommodation at the ANU’s Liversidge Court apartments. Successful applicants will need to fund their own travel to the Canberra. Applicants should hold a Ph.D., or expect to be awarded a doctoral degree by September 2011. Post-doctoral experience is desirable. The successful applicant will join a dynamic research-oriented faculty offering innovative undergraduate, graduate and doctoral programs. By the end of 2009 the number of Chinese netizens had reached 384 million, 618 times that of 1997 and an annual increase of 31.95 million users. In addition, the Internet had reached 28.9% of the total population, higher than the world average. At the same time, there were 3.23 million websites running in China, which was 2,152 times that of 1997. The number of IPv4 addresses approached 230 million, making China the second-largest owner in the world. Of all the netizens, 346 million used broadband and 233 million used mobile phones to access the Internet. They had moved on from dialing the access numbers to broadband and mobile phones.
