Call for Papers 5th International Conference on Communities & Technologies – C&T 2011 29 June – 2 July 2011, Queensland University of Technology, Brisbane, Australia http://ct2011.urbaninformatics.net/ The biennial Communities and Technologies (C&T) conference is the premier international forum for stimulating scholarly debate and disseminating research on the complex connections between communities – both physical and virtual – and information and communication technologies. Founded in 2008, The Centre for Internet & Society (CIS - http://www.cis-india.org/) is a Bangalore-based independent, non-profit, research organisation which is involved in research on the emerging field of the Internet and its relationship to the society. CIS brings together scholars, academics, students, programmers and scientists to engage in a large variety of Internet issues like governance, privacy and freedom of expression, etc. CIS works in the areas of histories of the Internet, digital natives, and a reader on the Wikipedia, enhancing higher education for the downtrodden, and accessibility for the disabled, openness, telecom and Internet governance. CIS runs different academic and research programmes and is receptive to new ideas and collaborations, projects and campaigns from the public. CIS, in collaboration with Hivos' Knowledge Programme (http://www.hivos.net/) launched a project, Digital Natives with a Cause? (http://www.cis-india.org/research/dn/dnrep) in 2008. As younger generations growing up in emerging information societies learn to engage with their geo-political and socio-cultural environments, a form of technology-mediated identity, popularly dubbed as the Digital Native, has been the discussion of a growing public and intellectual debate. These digital natives are transforming the ways in which they understand themselves as well as the world around them while engaging with Internet and digital technologies. Young users of technology are moving towards a reconfiguration of the world, where questions of identity, political participation, social transformation, cultural production, education, and livelihood are being restructured. The Digital Natives Research Programme focuses on producing new knowledge frameworks, vocabularies and lexicons to understand, investigate and support these new citizens or netizens rather who shall be the agents of change in the future. We believe that the world we live in is changing rapidly and the rise of Internet technologies has a lot to do with it. email statistic?

Hello everyone, I am deep in the turmoil of writing my dissertation results and am wondering if anyone knows of an article/paper that suggests the average length of an email? I have attempted to find this statistic (or even a paper detailing the number of characters in a corpus and how many emails existed within the corpus so I could calculate it myself) but have failed miserably. I realize there are several factors that dictate how short or long an email may be, but in the interest of simplifying analyses for comparison, I would love to find an average. Call for Papers: 'pig' Edited by Donna Lee Brian and Adele Wessell In George Orwell's Animal Farm, the pigs changed the law to read 'Some animals are more equal than others'. From Charlotte's Web to Babe, there are a plethora of contemporary cultural references as well as expressions of their intelligence and worth that would seem to support the pigs' cause. Pigs also give a voice to many aspects of popular culture and feature in fairytales, cartoons, comics, movies and novels. However, simultaneously, the term 'pig; is also synonymous with negative attributes - greed, dirtiness, disarray, brutality and chauvinism. 'Pigs' are also used to name those out of favour police officers, the obese, capitalists and male chauvinists, but also to give expression to the most unlikely events - as in, 'pigs might fly'. As food, pigs are both for feasts and forbidden, their meat the site of both desire and disgust. Their faces on platters and their feet in pots, they are smoked, roasted, organic, free-ranged, acorn-fed and farmed in the worst of industrial food producing factories. Snuck into dishes during the Inquisition to expose false conversos, pigs are unclean and inedible, rich and fatty/fattening, yet at the same time at the heart of tip-to-tail eating and some of the most expensive and desired of foodie products: heritage and Spanish hams, for instance. They are the other white meat. This issue of M/C Journal will be organised around responses to these multiple meanings of 'pig'. As editors, we approach this topic from our own joint areas of research interest of food studies and writing, but we are equally interested in the symbolic importance of 'pig' in all current and past culture and media. That is, for example, in pigs as pets and wild pigs, their place in medical innovation - significant research, for instance, is investigating using pigs' hearts for human transplants, since the size and mechanism of an average-sized pig heart is very close to one of ours - in religion, and in the history of pigs in folklore and myth. I found information on mobile phone diffusion/mobile phone subscriptions, but the data are aggregated (not by age ranges). Do you have an idea of where I could get such data?
