The position involves a considerable amount of administrative activity tied to directing the program, developing curricula, supporting new faculty recruitment, supervising up to 24 funded doctoral students, program budgeting, and working with program stakeholders in the five core departments as well as the College of Liberal Arts and Human Sciences, the College of Architecture and Urban Studies, and the Virginia Tech Graduate School. The position offers a competitive salary and reduction in the typical Virginia Tech teaching load of two courses each semester. Required Qualifications: Earned doctorate at the time of application in history, philosophy, political science, humanities, or another interdisciplinary area of scholarship grounded in analytical, applied, comparative, critical, or normative theoretical perspectives of scholarly inquiry. Candidates must have a clearly defined specialization in one of the central areas of social, political, ethical or cultural thought associated with this Ph.D. program. They also must have a widely recognized reputation for excellence and demonstrated strength in teaching/learning, discovery, and engagement. ASPECT is an innovative problem-based, theoretically-engaged doctoral program (http://www.aspect.vt.edu/) Evidence of successful prior administrative leadership and the ability to foster academic community are essential expectations for this position. Preferred Qualifications: Preference will be given to candidates whose established research program and current teaching specialization are tied to interdisciplinary scholarship in social, political, ethical, and cultural thought, and who have extensive prior administrative experience. Candidates also should have a record that would merit a tenured appointment in one of the four core departments in the College of Liberal Arts and Human Sciences, namely, History, Philosophy, Political Science or Religion & Culture. Academic Career Development Workshop for Research Students and Early Career Academics in conjunction with Internet Research 11, Gothenburg, Sweden, 20 October 2010 http://ir11.aoir.org/ DESCRIPTION For research students and early career academics, universities offer resources that help develop their research skills – for example, critical theory development, literature reviews, research methods, data analysis, writing skills, etc. However, building a successful career in academia poses a wide range of new challenges in addition to the pure academic craft of research. The resources and resilience one needs in order to shape an academic career path often appear ambiguous, particularly in the innately transformative field of Internet research. In response to feedback from AoIR members, this full-day workshop seeks to address this concern by offering a supportive and constructive environment to discuss career development related issues that are of specific interest to research students and early career academics. The first half of the workshop is devoted to the process of transitioning into research student training and supervision. In the second half, we will look at issues of academic leadership. The workshop chairs, along with invited senior academic researchers, will share with the participants some of their off-the-record insights of their career development milestones and the related decisions that have shaped their career paths. The workshop chairs will act as facilitators and moderators who will encourage the participants to join the discussion and share their own views and experiences with the rest of the group. The goal is to establish a peer support atmosphere that bridges disciplinary, cultural, and regional differences in order to distill the common skills and capabilities that are necessary to identify and seize opportunities for shaping one’s own career trajectory in academia. The main topics of discussion for each session will be negotiated with the participants on the day. This is to make the workshop as relevant and practical to the participants as possible. Hello fellow AoIR-ers, I'm happy to announce the release of *140Kit*: a simple, free-to-use, open research platform for pulling data from Twitter, built by some awesome members of the Web Ecology Project (known previously for studies of the Iranian election on Twitter, the Twitter reactions to Michael Jackson's death, and a recent initial examination of ChatRoulette). It’s been awhile since the Web Ecology community last made a peep on the web. Some had been speculating that we had simply up and disappeared, but reports of our demise were greatly exaggerated, as they say. In any case, thanks to the completely amazing work of our affiliate researchers at Bennington, we’re glad today to announce the public launch of 140Kit, Web Ecology’s very own free-to-use toolkit for exploring and data mining Twitter. It’s the final product of the various provisional tools we’ve used to produce our previous reports on the social phenomena of Twitter, and of lead researcher Devin Gaffney’s own work on high throughput humanities. So what does it do? Notably: * It enables complete data pulls for a set of users or terms on Twitter, with searches running continuously. * The ability to download those data pulls in raw form to use for whatever you please. * The ability to stand on the shoulders of giants by mixing and matching existing data pulls to generate entirely new combinations of data and analysis. * And the ability to instantaneously generate basic visualizations around the data (term use, inequality of participation, etc). * Best of all, we are making this platform open and free to use for all interested users*. This includes opening up an API for queries of all sorts, an honest, open, and editable codebase, and plans already in the works to make the program extensible to allow developers to write their own analytics for the kit, on whatever sort of metrics in whatever programming language (stay tuned for details).
