Studying online community

Hello everyone, I'm just getting started on my PhD studies, unfunded as yet, regarding new social technologies and online communities and would really appreciate any hints, tips and advice members of this list may have on good information sources, relevant publications, events and so on. Broadly speaking, I'm interested in how communities extend from the online to the offline and vice versa, how participation in online communities becomes part of every-day life, how the lines between offline and online communication and relationship building are blurred as access to online social tools becomes ubiquitous. More specifically, I am looking at how new social technologies affect local communities and what developers should take into consideration while creating new tools with a view of fostering online community. I hope to come up with results that offer an insight into how the concept of community is changing for members of a hyper-connected society, and the implications of that change for local communities. My research approach is ethnographic. It would be great to hear from others with similar interests, and also perhaps to discover fellow "sufferers" at similar stages of their academic careers, for a bit of mutual support and encouragement. :) Of course, any advice would be hugely appreciated! Hil all, I'm wondering whether there's enough interest to put together an informal new media studies grad school fair for prospective students at the AOIR conference? The timing in early fall is perfect for applicants, and I imagine there are a few attendees who might welcome the chance to talk with folks from various programs. If there is a need for this, I would be happy to try to put something together for AOIR in Seattle (I won't be in Sweden). Hi Theo, Before I flog my own program, I would suggest looking for existing research on the areas that interest you and then seeing where the authors are located. Always make sure there are at least 3 people at any program you apply to that you could work with since faculty come and go without warning. Get that paper for AoIR submitted for publication asap, you want that submission on your vita when you apply. Finally, apply to multiple programs (I applied to 7) to ensure you have choices and have a basis for negotiation on funding and other perks. Now the plug: Pound for pound one the best programs in the US - Communication Studies at the University of Washington. Lots of heavy hitters in new media both in Comm and at the I School. AoIR will be there next year. Good funding with lots of TA slots (big program) and they are a "tool box" program that allows space for a wide variety of research interests and theoretical and epistemological approaches. Good teacher training which will give you an edge when you come out - can't stress that enough They also have good relationships with the local tech sector. Seattle has an NFL team with a rabid and tech savvy fan base and is a large metro area with a small town feel. Good town/gown relationship, pretty, great mass transit, great food. Has there been any sociological work done on how precocious teens participating in online discussion affects them later in life?

I made the observation to a friend today that there is a cohort of precocious people, between the ages of about 13 to 30, who have had this unifying experience of being online at an early age and interacting with people significantly older than they were as peers. My hypothesis is that this shared experience bound these people together in a way similar to how moving around a lot as a child created the phenomena of the Third Culture Kid (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thi... ). As someone who has gone though that experience, I felt like it's profoundly affected my development, in both positive and negative ways. I also feel like I'm able to identify other people who share this background because it affected them in many of the same ways. I want to learn more about this phenomena and I'm wondering what resources are out there right now that investigate this? Cheers Hang

AoIR Peeps, Hello all. This is one of the stranger requests that will come down the pipe, but Dr. Cornish said it was OK to ask, so here I go. I will be graduating from Northern Illinois in the Spring of 2011, so I have to start looking at doctoral programs now. My research interests are in new media and technology and its integration with social networking and fandom with a journalism and sports media tint. (I'm really a quad) My thesis, on NFL Players and Twitter, has been accepted for AoIR 11.0 and I am pretty stoked to see many of you there. AoIR 10 in Milwaukee really opened my eyes to the field, and my research interests are brimming. I know I'm not going to find an exact fit, but can anyone give me some advice? AoIR doesn't have a program database, and NATCOM is so vast, I'm getting lost in it. I've found some programs with AEJMC, but I'd really appreciate some guidance. This Literature Review was produced for Harvard Berkman Center’s Youth and Media Policy Working Group Initiative, co-directed by John Palfrey, Urs Gasser, and myself and funded by the MacArthur Foundation. This Literature Review builds on the 2008 LitReview that Andrew Schrock and I crafted for the Internet Safety Technical Task Force. This document is not finalized, but we want to make our draft available broadly so that scholars working in this area can inform us of anything that we might be missing. Risky Behaviors and Online Safety: A 2010 Literature Review It’s been almost two years since the Internet Safety Technical Task Force completed its work. As a co-director of that project, I coordinated the Research Advisory Board to make certain that we included all of the different research that addressed online safety. When we shared our report, we were heavily criticized as being naive and clueless (or worse). Much of the criticism was directed at me and the researchers. We were regularly told that social network sites would radically change the picture of online safety and that we simply didn’t have new enough data to understand how different things would be in a few years. Those critiques continue. As researchers who were actively collecting data and in the field, many of us are frustrated because what we see doesn’t match what the politicians believe. It’s been two years since we put out that first Lit Review and I’m glad to be able to share an updated one with all sorts of new data. Not surprisingly (to us at least), not much has changed. What you’ll find is that researchers have gone deeper, getting a better picture of some of the dynamics and implications. You’ll also find that the overarching picture has not changed much. Many of the core messages that we shared in the ISTTF report continue to hold. In this updated Lit Review, we interrogate the core issues raised in the ISTTF report and introduce new literature that complements, conflicts, or clarifies what was previously said. We bring in international data to provide a powerful comparison, most notably from the reports that came out in the EU and Australia. And we highlight areas where new research is currently underway and where more research is necessary. This Literature Review does not include information on sexting, which can be found in Sexting: Youth Practices and Legal Implications. It also does not include some of the material on self-harm because we are working on a separate review of that material (to be released soon). As I said, this is a draft version that we’re putting out for public commentary and critique. We will continue to modify this in the upcoming months. Hello everyone! I am preparing my research experiment on web site usability and I have to do a pre-test to select people for it: I need to define if they are beginners, intermediate or advanced internet users (in general). You know, something similar to English-level tests: if a person can do A, he/she is a beginner, if A and B - intermediate, and if A, B and C - then we have an advanced level of English. I was wondering if there exists the same test to find out what kind of Internet user you are? Because if not, there should be one, I think! You asked about testing a user's internet expertise level. I just came across a test that John Horrigan used for an FCC study on Internet use. The report gives results for how many people said they understood 'very well' the following terms refresh or reload - 61% operating system - 44% Internet browser cookie - 42% JPEG file - 41% spyware or malware - 40% widget - 16% This seems like a nice simple way to find out about internet knowledge and there are his numbers to compare it to. /Caroline Broadband Adoption and Use in America, OBI Working Paper Series no. 1, By John B.
