[snip] At base the iPad is an anything box that replaces a seemingly endless plethora of other things you already own: It's a TV, a radio, an MP3 player, a compass, a flashlight, a level, a deck of cards, a calculator, a photo album, an alarm clock, a Bible, the Talmud (yes, the Talmud has been ported to the iPad)... the list goes on and on. The crucial question for academics is: What in our current arsenal will the iPad replace? After using the device, the answer surprised me: the iPad makes a lousy computer replacement, but it does a great job of replacing paper. Hi all, If you were looking for someone who's qualified to look at a new media package (website, email list, Facebook fan page, etc) and peer review it in terms of how it meets the goals it set out to meet, who might you ask? I'm looking for articles in this area to see if I can find people writing about it, but I'm not finding them. Thanks in advance, Tery Griffin

Just to second Jeffrey's observation--there seems to be some bottleneck on the reservations accessible through the site (via MCI). Unfortunately, the deep discounters Priceline and Hotwire, which have served me well at earlier IR meetings, don't have any arrangements with hotels in Gothenburg. However, there are hotel rooms available, and with a little hunting, at rates lower than those offered on the site. I ended up finding a deal using airline miles, but also found, e.g., economy rooms at the Gothia Towers in the $113 range, via Kayak.com and hotels.info. And as Peter notes, there are a range of other less expensive options in town. Colleagues/ Speaking Of Remix >> On July 5, the NYTimes published on article titled "To Stop Cheats, Colleges Learn Their Trickery", which was noted in a post to one of our ISU internal e-lists. In part, the article discusses turnitin, the widely-used plagiarism detection system. As I response to comments on the story by list members, I informed the list of a recent presentation I gave at the 3rd International Plagiarism Conference held just over two years ago. BTW: Comments on my blog post are Most Welcome (As Always) ! enJOY ! /Gerry A few years ago I gave a keynote at the 3rd International Plagiarism Conference / 23 - 25 June 2008 / City Campus East, Northumbria University / Newcastle-upon-tyne, UK / "Disruptive Scholarship: An Idea Whose Time Has Come: (Re)Use / (Re)Mix / (Re)New" Abstract Hadrian's Wall is a stone and turf fortification built by the Roman Empire across the width of modern-day England. ... [It was] 117 kilometres long, ... [I]ts width and height [were] dependent on the construction materials [that] ... were available nearby. ... [T]he wall in the east follow[ed] the outcrop of a hard, resistant igneous diabase rock escarpment ... Local limestone was used in the construction, except for ... section[s] in the west ... where turf was used instead ... . The Broad Wall was initially built with a clay-bonded rubble core and mortared dressed rubble facing stones, but this seems to have made it vulnerable to collapse, and repair with a mortared core was sometimes necessary.... [I]n time ... [Hadrian's] Wall was abandoned and fell into ruin. Over the centuries and even into the twentieth century a large proportion of the stone was reused in other local buildings. Throughout history, humans have (re)used local resources to create not only buildings and fortifications, but monuments, roads, and a wide variety of other structures. Indeed, from his point of view, “the health, progress, and wealth creation of a culture is fundamentally tied to this participatory remix process” [snip] In the recently-released Horizon Report 2008 - a joint publication of the New Media Consortium (NMC) and the EDUCAUSE Learning Initiative (ELI), six emerging information technologies and practices that are expected to significantly impact educational organizations are profiled: Grassroots Video, Collaborative Webs, Mobile Broadband, Data Mashups, Collaborative Intelligence, and Social Operating Systems. In this presentation, we will review the Read/Write Traditions of the Arts, Humanities, and Sciences; analyze key Past / Present / Future Participatory Technologies; and explore the potential of Web 2.0 for creating/fostering Disruptive Learning / Scholarship / Teaching in the 21st century. In this "Age of Peer Production," armies of amateur participants demand the freedom to rip, remix, and share their own digital culture. Aided by the newest iteration of file sharing networks, digital media users now have the option to retreat underground, by using secure, private, and anonymous file sharing networks, to share freely and breathe new life into digital media. These underground networks, collectively termed "the Darknet[,] will grow in scope, resilience, and effectiveness in direct proportion to [increasing] digital restrictions the public finds untenable." The Darknet has been called the public's great equalizing force in the digital millennium, because it will serve as "a counterbalancing force and bulwark to defend digital liberties" against forces lobbying for stronger copyrights and increased technological controls. [2] This article proposes a digital use exception to existing copyright law to provide adequate compensation to authors while promoting technological innovation, and the creation and dissemination of new works. Although seemingly counterintuitive, content producers, publishers, and distributors wishing to profit from their creations must relinquish their control over digital media in order to survive the Darknet era. Absent a government-granted monopoly, free market forces will provide adequate incentives to producers to create quality works, and an efficient dissemination infrastructure will evolve. [3] Part I examines the prospect that, due to the Darknet, it is virtually impossible to control digital copying. Peer production is increasing and darknets are becoming more prevalent. Liability rules, stringent copyrights, and technological protection measures stifle innovation, smother creation, and force consumers further underground into darknets. The Darknet poses a particular threat because it is impossible to track or proscribe user behavior. Further, the presence of the Darknet will render technological protection measures unenforceable, or at least impracticable, as a solution for digital copyright management. Part II introduces a digital use exception for copyright to deter development of the Darknet. The proposed copyright shelter is the solution most closely aligned with the goals of copyright, and a monopoly is no longer necessary or practical to accomplish those goals in the digital realm. Part III explores methods by which content creators, publishers, and distributors can profit under this new rule. Absent copyrights for digital works, service providers will capitalize on alternative business methods and data mining.
