Second CFP: Workshop "Bringing MT to the User: Research on Integrating MT in the Translation Industry"
by "Венцислав Жечев (Ventsislav Zhechev)" 09 Aug '10

SECOND CALL FOR PAPERS ---------------------------------------------------------------------- "Bringing MT to the User: Research on Integrating MT in the Translation Industry" Second Joint EM+/CNGL Workshop (JEC 2010) http://web.me.com/emcnglworkshop/JEC2010 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- At the AMTA 2010 conference (http://amta2010.amtaweb.org) the EuroMatrix+ Project (http://www.euromatrixplus.eu) and the Centre for Next Generation Localisation (http://cngl.ie) are organising the Second Joint EM+/CNGL Workshop, titled "Bringing MT to the User: Research on Integrating MT in the Translation Industry". The workshop will take place in Denver, Colorado on 4 November 2010, immediately after the main AMTA 2010 conference. Premise: Recent years have seen a revolution in MT triggered by the emergence of statistical approaches to MT and improvements in translation quality. MT (rule-based, statistical and hybrid) is now available for many languages for free on the Web and is making strong inroads into the corporate localisation and translation industries. Open-source MT solutions are competing with proprietary products. Increasing numbers of translators are post-editing TM/MT output. At the same time, there has been some disconnect between academic research on MT, which (rightly so) focuses on algorithms to increase translation quality, and many of the practical issues that need to be addressed to make MT maximally useful in real translation and localisation scenarios. Objectives: This workshop will bring together MT researchers, developers, industrial users and translators to discuss issues that are most important in real world industrial settings involving MT, but currently not very popular in research circles. Workshop Chairs: Ventsislav Zhechev Philipp Koehn Josef van Genabith Call for Research Papers: For this workshop we solicit full research papers with industry or academic background to highlight the real-world issues that need to be tackled by new research and the recent academic advancements that improve translation quality, as well as novel and successful methods for the integration of Machine Translation with Translation Memories or Localisation Workflows. We will accept research paper submissions (reviewed anonymously) for oral presentation and publication. Papers should present clearly identifiable problem statements, research methodologies and measurable outcomes and evaluation. The papers should follow the submission guidelines for the research track of the main AMTA 2010 Conference (http://amta2010.amtaweb.org/cfp-mt.htm) with the maximum length being 10 pages in US Letter format, including references. Please, do not include your name in the paper text and avoid overt self-references to facilitate the blind review process. If a paper is accepted, at least one author will have to register through the AMTA 2010 website and travel to Denver to present it. Topics include but are not limited to: • MT/TM in Localisation/Translation Workflows • MT/TM Combinations • Post-Editing Support for MT • MT and Monolingual Post-Editing • MT Confidence Scores and Post-Editing Effort • Training Data for MT: Size, Domain and Quality • Data Cleanup and Preparation for MT • Meta-Data Mark-Up/Annotation and MT • Terminology and MT • Costing/Pricing MT • MT for Free/for a Fee • Rule-Based, Statistical and Hybrid MT • Computing Resources for MT • MT in the Cloud • MT and the Crowd • Smart Learning from Post-Edits • (Machine) Translation in Context Program Committee: The submitted papers will be reviewed by a mixed industry–academia committee. Industry members: Fred Hollowood (Symantec), Johann Roturier (Symantec), Dag Schmidtke (Microsoft), Dion Wiggins (Asia Online), Jaap van der Meer (TAUS), Manuel Tomás Carrasco Benítez (DGT of the EC), Daniel Grasmick (Lucy Software), Marc Dymetman (XRCE), Nicholas Stroppa (Google), Tony O’Dowd (Alchemy) Academic members: Michael Carl (IAI Saarbrücken), Eiichiro Sumita (NICT Japan), Julien Bourdaillet (University of Montreal), Mikel Forcada (Universitat d’Alacant), Philipp Koehn (EM+), Hans Uszkoreit (EM+), Josef van Genabith (CNGL), Andy Way (CNGL), Harold Somers (CNGL), Ventsislav Zhechev (EM+, CNGL) Deadlines (all 23:59 GMT -11): 29 August 2010 Full Paper Submissions Due 12 September 2010 Acceptance Notifications Sent Out 25 September 2010 Camera-Ready Papers Due Please, direct all enquiries to Dr. Ventsislav Zhechev at emcnglworkshop(a)me.com For up-to-date information, please visit http://web.me.com/emcnglworkshop/JEC2010 For information about the First Joint EM+/CNGL Workshop, please visit http://www.euromatrixplus.eu/cngl2009 Dr. Ventsislav Zhechev EuroMatrix+ Centre for Next Generation Localisation School of Computing Dublin City University http://VentsislavZhechev.eu

Paper: Influence and Passivity in Social Media

Huberman Social Computing Lab HP Labs Palo Alto, California, USA bernardo.huberman(a)hp.com ABSTRACT The ever-increasing amount of information flowing through Social Media forces the members of these networks to com- pete for attention and influence by relying on other people to spread their message. A large study of information propa- gation within Twitter reveals that the majority of users act as passive information consumers and do not forward the content to the network. Therefore, in order for individuals to become influential they must not only obtain attention and thus be popular, but also overcome user passivity. We propose an algorithm that determines the influence and pas- sivity of users based on their information forwarding activ- ity. An evaluation performed with a 2.5 million user dataset shows that our influence measure is a good predictor of URL clicks, outperforming several other measures that do not ex- plicitly take user passivity into account. We also explicitly demonstrate that high popularity does not necessarily imply high influence and vice-versa. http://www.scribd.com/doc/35401457/Influence-and-Passivity-in-Social-Media-…

Hi, William and others, I'd like to first express my appreciation for the question of missing data in qualitative and online research and for the excellent responses that make for such good reading and opportunities for thinking on this list. I also offer a few thoughts on the matter. May I first underscore the aforementioned basic tool of triangulation, using other methods of inquiry to supplement whatever ia your primary data collection technique? I don't think this can be overstated, that interviews can add to participant/observation, for example, to give different perspectives. Second, through what people say about each other, data is gained, through the secondary source, even when a person or group may not share that information directly. This information gives a more well-rounded picture than not having access to it at all. Third, we may have to trade off completeness for an in-depth look at some areas. For example, the researcher may know of a splinter group that exists behind the scenes and know from evidence that the influence on the main online community is there. However, without direct access or people talking about it in depth, the researcher may decide to mention it briefly, giving most attention to the main community, All this is predicated on working within what your IRB has approved, of course. -- cheers, andee

Missing Data in Qualitative and Online Research

I know i have expressed this in past papers but their has not been enough work in the area of comparing the distribution of types of communication units in various types of group discussions online vs. normal face to face group discussions. The first controlled experiment comparing the two using Bales coding showed very significant differences. There are a tremendous number of online discussions that it would be interesting to analyze including online courses which has never been done. i suspect just looking at what the instructor said in these discussions vs. whether they had high or low ratings by the class would be a significant result. All types of problem solving discussions are also of interest and information exchange discussions as well. Here are the full reports from roxanne's original experiments with far more detail then ever appeared in teh journal article. this is from the following njit library location http://library.njit.edu/archives/cccc-materials/index.php RR#12 Face-to-face vs. computerized conferences : a controlled experiment, Volume I: Findings<http://archives.njit.edu/vol01/cccc-materials/njit-cccc-rr-012/njit-cccc-rr…> Aug. 1980 Starr Roxanne Hiltz, Kenneth Johnson, Charles Aronovitch, Murray Turoffbegin_of_the_skype_highlighting end_of_the_skype_highlighting RR#12a Face-to-face vs. computerized conferences : a controlled experiment, Volume II: Methodological Appendices<http://archives.njit.edu/vol01/cccc-materials/njit-cccc-rr-012a/njit-cccc-r…> Aug. 1980 Starr Roxanne Hiltz, Kenneth Johnson, Charles Aronovitch, Murray Turoffbegin_of_the_skype_highlighting -- Distinguished Professor Emeritus Information Systems, NJIT homepage: http://is.njit.edu/turoff

by Voorhees, Gerald 08 Aug '10

08 Aug '10

Double CFP: Continuum Approaches to Digital Game Studies Book Series (Edited Collection on Digital Role-playing Games and Edited Collection on First Person Shooters) These two collections will be the first two titles in a larger series of edited volumes, Approaches to Digital Game Studies, published by Continuum. Each book in the series will be organized around a thematic or functional genre of game. Although digital game genres and the criteria for defining such genres are contested and dynamic categories, exploring the promises and pitfalls of genre is precisely one of the goals the series hopes to accomplish. Additionally, the series will bring the insights of a variety of scholarly disciplines to bear on the analysis of digital games in order to better understand the nature of this medium, its role in reshaping civic life and its impact on the production, circulation and contestation of global and local cultures. Potential chapter contributions will be vetted by the series Review Board and invited manuscripts will be reviewed by the series Editors and approved by the Review Board. Series Review Board: Mia Conslavo, University of Ohio James Paul Gee, Arizona State University Helen Kennedy, University of the West of England* Frans Mayra, University of Tampere Toby Miller, University of California, Riverside* Torill Elvira Mortensen, IT University Copenhagen* Lisa Nakamura, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign Gareth Schott, University of Waikato Mark JP Wolf, Concordia University Wisconsin (* indicates commitment still subject to final contract) Series Editors: Gerald Voorhees, High Point University Joshua Call, Grand View University Katie Whitlock, California State University, Chico >>> Edited Collection on Digital Role-playing Games: "Dungeons, Dragons and Digital Denizens: Digital Role-playing Games" One of the most popular and culturally significant game genres, digital role-playing games (RPGs) generate a rich tapestry of technologies, players, communities, cultures and commercial forces. This edited collection, provisionally titled, "Dungeons, Dragons and Digital Denizens: Digital Role-playing Games," is designed for a broad academic audience and will feature essays that either examine specific games or consider the genre as a whole. We invite scholars and critics to contribute to this edited collection of essays exploring the theory and criticism of digital RPGs. The collection will publish essays on digital RPGs that engage the theory and criticism of console, computer and/or massively multiplayer online role-playing games (MMORPGs). However, contributions not focused on MMORPGs are especially encouraged. Contributions from all academic disciplines and geographic regions are invited. The collection and series aim to advance theory and criticism by bringing different voices and perspectives into conversation. However, critical inquiry is preferred. Re: [Air-L] Fw: Re: Missing Data in Qualitative and Online Research
by Max Spotti 08 Aug '10

Dear all, I take it that we all know what is an interpretive ethnographic perspective. I wonder though when and whether one can say that there are missing data when engaged in fieldwork. Take the case of entering a primary school classroom, you might have access to the teacher's log, yet again the school's head may refuse you access to a school policy either because the document is outdated, or not in place. In this case the ethnographer should report what has happened, or base him/herself on what she can have access to. As for online qualitative research, then again we should ask ourselves first whether the screen is a viable fieldwork and whether the screen either hinders or helps the ethnographer to reconstruct the cultural ecology of the space that s/he is engaged with. One thing is for sure, one has to go deep and, in so doing, I mean that it is worth looking beyond the boundaries of the socio-cultural space one is trying to reconstruct. Take the case of fan cultures. A fan may well be part of a fan group on Fb, s/he might flag off a certain identity, say certain things (appropriate himself of the genre that s/he thinks he should use in order to be part of this fan group). In my view though it is also worth looking beyond that fan group and see whether the fan in question has a blog or a webpage, and maybe through this webpage of his, one can have access to his writings and to how his inhabited identity of being a fan is constructed (beyond) the fan wall on Fb. That may lead to cater for those data that one has not been able to collect and it may also cater for triangulation. I hope this helps a little. Best wishes, Max Spotti -----Original Message----- From: "Mohammad H.
