Starting this fall a class at Duke University in Durham, NC will begin experimenting with the use of Apple iPads in student field research. The Duke Global Health Institute will distribute the tablet devices in a master's course that introduces students to methodological techniques used in global health research. [snip] "Our primary goal is to equip our students with a toolset that allows them to make the most of their time in the field," said Associate Professor of Sociology Jen'nan Read, who will be teaching the class. "As calculation, graphing, and presentation-creation functions of the iPad are put to use in the field, [snip]." The Institute expects the iPads to increase research efficiency in the field by allowing students in low-resource settings to capture more data using one device than the traditional methods of data collection. "Traditionally, the more sophisticated learning, the kind that requires synthesis and evaluation, occurs after the students have left the field, after they have completed data entry, and only after they have begun to organize, interpret, compare and contrast, and summarize their data by retiring to a location with a laptop or desktop computer, ...," said educational technologies consultant Marc Sperber, who is the main consultant for this project. "With an iPad a student may collect, organize and display data while in the field, allowing them to immediately engage in analyzing and interpreting that data when and where it has greatest meaning." The iPads will be equipped with 3G and WiFi Internet access, as well as a variety of research and survey applications that can record and import multimedia interviews and photos, and collect, chart, evaluate, and present data. Although Sperber hasn't selected the specific applications he expects to load onto the iPads, he said they would be in the categories of research, reference, communication, and navigation. The white paper, released by the State Council Information Office, introduced facts of the development and use of the Internet in China, and elaborated on the country's basic policies on the Internet. The Chinese government actively advocates and supports the development and application of the Internet across the country, it said, stressing the government's basic Internet policy: active use, scientific development, law-based administration and ensured security. By the end of 2009 the number of netizens in China had reached 384 million, 618 times that of 1997 with an annual increase of 31.95 million users. The Internet had reached 28.9 percent of the total population by the end of 2009, higher than the world average. Its accessibility will be raised to 45 percent of the population in the coming five years, it said. There were 3.23 million websites running in China last year, which was 2,152 times that of 1997. Of all the netizens, 346 million used broadband and 233 million used mobile phones to access the Internet. They had moved on from dialing the access numbers to broadband and mobile phones. Ambient media are embedded throughout the natural environment of the consumer in his home, in his car, in restaurants, and on his mobile device. Predominant example services are smart wallpapers in homes, location based services, RFID based entertainment services for children, or intelligent homes. The distribution of the medium throughout the natural environment implies a paradigm change of how to think about content. Until recently, content was identified as single entities to information a video stream, audio stream, TV broadcast. However, in the age of ambient media, the notion of content extends from the single entity thinking towards a plethora of sensor networks, smart devices, personalized services, and media embedded in the natural environment of the user. The user actively participates and co-designs media experience with his location based input. Initiatives as the smart Web considering location based tagging for web-pages underline this development. This multidisciplinary workshop aims to answer to the challenges how to select, compose, and generate ambient content; how to present ambient content?; how to re-use ambient content and learning experiences?; what is the characteristics of ambient media, its content, and technology?; and what are ambient media in terms of story-telling and art? And finally, how do ambient media create business and value? How can ambient media be integrated into business processes and strategies? Semantics plays a crucial role in the generation of ambient media content. It can be seen as the glue between the raw data and the ambient media. Therefore we are interested to see innovative ideas how data can be (semi-)automatically be interpreted and translated into media presentations. The workshop aims at a series, and at the creation of a think-tank of creative thinkers coming from technology, art, human-computer interaction, and social sciences, that are interested in glimpsing the future of semantic ambient intelligent empowered media technology. Workshop Challenges How can ambient media be applied in business processes? How do ambient media create value and business? Business opportunities and strategic issues of ambient media? What is content and how can it be presented in the age of ubiquitous and pervasive? How to select, compose and generate ambient content? How to manage and re-use ambient content in specific application scenarios (e.g. e-learning)? What is interactivity between the single consumers and consumer groups in the ambient context? How can collaborative or audience participatory content be supported? Which methods for experience design, prototyping, and business models exist?
