A few observations: I think the form factor, and wow factor, of the iPad is central to the choice made to put them in the field. I have a netbook, a laptop, and a million other devices, and the _pad_ nature of the iPad would be an intriguing tool for use for the reasons elucidated by boyd: for its unobtrusiveness, in some cases (e.g., flat against a table surface; cradled in arm like a legal pad; when screen viewing is paramount, as opposed to keyboarding or data entry). Further, Duke has a long history of both a relationship with Apple as well as a desire to be on the fore of implementing new technology in academia; about this I can speak firsthand, due to my association with Duke and with such projects in a previous life. Perhaps most importantly, they frequently have the means to do it when not all others can. Is there a cool factor in jumping onto iPod, iMovie, iPad, and iWhatever's next at Duke and elsewhere for use in research? Undeniably, yes. But who ever said that the tools researchers use, aside from being utilitarian, can't also have a bonus of being fun for them to handle and use, too? Why iPad? Why not? --Sarah --- S a r a h T. The conference will explore and share work carried out in libraries around the world to deliver services and resources to users ‘on the move’, via a growing plethora of mobile and hand-held devices. The m-Libraries conference brings together researchers, educators, technical developers, managers and library professionals to exchange experience and expertise and to generate ideas for future developments. The third International m-libraries Conference is hosted by the University of Southern Queensland in collaboration with The Open University, Athabasca University, Thompson Rivers University and Emerald Group Publishing. We are seeking papers on the following themes: 1. Emerging mobile technologies (including platforms, devices and software) 2. Delivering new mobile services to users 3. New mobile applications (technical) 4. Mobile users (e.g. studies of requirements and/or behaviour) 5. Development of content for mobiles (including OERs, commercially published, user-generated etc.) 6. Privacy and mobiles 7. Copyright issues for mobile delivery Please submit your abstracts (up to 300 words) ... by November 1st. These will be subject to peer review and authors will be notified by 14 January 2011. We expect that papers may include research reports, demonstrations of technical developments, practical case studies or reviews. Posters are also invited. Colleagues/ IMHO > A Must-Read article !!! /Gerry Abstract The purpose of this paper is to provide an overview of the current state of worldwide mobile usage; mobile technologies; libraries' use of mobile technologies including a review of library mobile catalog options, both vendor-supplied and in-house created; perspectives from current library leaders and innovators on the importance of incorporating the libraries' resources into the mobile environment; and future directions for mobile library services. Conclusion In the near future, mobile versions of a library's web site will be as common and as expected as the library's current desktop site is today. Developing your library's mobile web site should start by crafting a successful proposal that effectively communicates the importance of mobile web accessibility to administrators, faculty, and staff within your library. "Ubiquitous handheld access is more prominent thanks to digital lifestyle devices such as smart phones and iPods, yet libraries still focus on digital content for typical desktop PCs" (McDonald and Thomas, 2006, p. 5). Gathering the data that backs up the growing assumption that mobile phones are omnipresent in your community or on your campus will help build a more convincing argument. Exploring examples of mobile library sites will provide timely ideas and inspiration for your library mobile site. In addition, understanding your particular user base and how they make use of mobile devices, whether they are primarily members of Generation Y or members of another demographic, will help design a site that is heavily trafficked by your users. There will be many opportunities for offering library services in a mobile environment in the near future. Making a strong argument for which of these services works best for your library will keep your library relevant and meaningful in a time ofconstant technological change. Good evening! I think the reason that Demolition Man shows the abundance of public phones on poles and the concomittant absence of mobile phones is that it is a panopticon society where the location of individuals can be fully tracked so that picking up nearby phone is enough to connect others. I also agree cell-phone can be obsolete if we see 'calling function' only. People here use cell-phone for watching TV (DMB;Digital Mobile Broadcasting), Internet banking, stock trading, GPS navigation in a car (or when they ride a bike) and as a credit card (with help of SIM card function), MP3 player and so on. It is becoming a mobile computer (indeed, it is with CPU and memory and network module) with more or less calling function priority. Colleagues/ Speaking Of Large Cell Phones >>> /Gerry Earlier this month, CNN had story about the “Inventor of cell phone: We knew someday everybody would have one”, Martin Cooper. Last spring, our Electrical and Computer Engineering department sponsored a Centennial Distinguished Alumni Seminar that was given by a colleague of Cooper, Donald Linder, a retired Corporate Vice President, Motorola, and ISU graduate. “Donald Linder graduated from Iowa State University with an electrical engineering degree in 1965, and began a 36-year career with Motorola. In 1972, Motorola executives asked Linder and his team to create the world’s first portable phone. Linder was the primary designer leading a team of a dozen engineers. Roughly three months after the project’s initiation, the team celebrated their success: the creation of the world’s first portable phone, the DynaTAC Portable.” I attended the seminar and was fortunate to hear IMHO A Most Magical presentation about the development of The Cell Phone >>>and hold (a prototype [?] of) the DynaTAC <<<. It was quite an experience to handle “The Brick” > Although heavy by today’s standards, it was indeed revolutionary for its day [Yes > I *do* remember the 70s/‘80s [:-)]. iPad as Research Tool

Thanks danah for showing us 1 way the iPad could be useful in research, rather than just entertainment or being kewl: "mine is bigger than your's." ***I still maintain that the iOS is an inadequate engine, and as for battery life, most peeps in all but poorest countries have electricity in their homes.*** Of course, we're kinda obsolescent, but when NetLab did the COnnected Lives interview, our piloting found that laptops were a distraction -- both intimadating and fascinating -- and we went to a modified paper-pen-stickynote data collection technique. Read about it in our Field Methods paper (also on my website). Bernie Hogan, Juan-Antonio Carrasco and Barry Wellman. 2007. "Visualizing Personal Networks: Working with Participant-Aided Sociograms." Field Methods 19 (2), May: 116-144. Maybe it would be useful if CITASA, AOIR, CSCW had a session or 2 on data gathering gadgets. I've seen lots on data analysis -- the Sunbelt Social Network conference was filled with dazzling ones -- but little on the pesky problem of getting the stuff in. After all the hype, I can't figger out why someone (even at Duke) would use an iPad rather than a netbook for their research. Sounds like kewl won over functionality. If I'm taking notes, I'd rather have a real keyboard.
