Call for contribution and participation ICTs & Migration Conference (University of Deusto, Bilbao, Spain), Nov. 10-12, 2010 The International Conference on Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) and Migration will be held on November 10-12, 2010 in Bilbao, Spain. It is hosted by the University of Deusto, Bilbao. The widespread use of distance- and time-shrinking telecommunication technologies, such as electronic mail, mobile/cell phones, and the World Wide Web, by diaspora groups, constitutes a new dimension in the study of migrant and diasporic identities and cultures within the context of transnationalism and globalization. This has attracted the attention of scholars from a variety of disciplines, such as anthropology, political science, philosophy, sociology, mass media, and computer-based communication. The goal of the International Conference on ICTs and Migration is to provide fresh insights into a wide range of dispersed populations and their interactions with information and communication technologies. It will also explore the richness of the intricate realities of digital migrant communities and diasporas as a true global phenomenon. This interdisciplinary conference will facilitate a scientific forum of excellence where international leading experts on the fields of migration, diaspora, and ICTs would be able to share their knowledge and present their work to the academic community and society at large. Besides the scheduled programme, the conference will provide time for ad-hoc discussion groups and networking. The conference is free and open to everyone, whether you are a PhD candidate, a young researcher or a senior researcher. Due to our limited budget, we cannot provide any financial support to cover participants’ travel arrangements and accommodation expenses. To this end, we call for papers and presentations from any discipline and methodology (or conjunctions of different disciplines and methodologies) that address the conference main themes: ICTs, new media, international migration, and diasporas. Please send an abstract (for papers submit abstract of approximately 250 words and for presentations submit abstract of approximately 150 words) before the end of the deadline on 15 September 2010 to Pedro Oiarzabal at pedro.oiarzabal(a)deusto.es (earlier submissions are welcome). You will receive a notification of the acceptance of your paper or presentation by September 30, 2010. We will assign your paper or presentation to an appropriate session. Home to 27 departments, schools and colleges, the Faculty is leading Montreal’s Concordia University to the forefront of research and graduate education in Quebec and Canada. The Faculty is recognized for innovative research in the sciences, humanities, and social sciences. The Department of Communication Studies invites applications for a Tier II Canada Research Chair (CRC) in Feminist Media Studies. The ideal candidate will mobilize established strengths in our Department and the University, and be well positioned to actively participate in local, national and international feminist research networks. Tier II CRCs are awarded for five years and are renewable once. These positions offer an attractive salary, an annual research stipend, reduced teaching loads, and the opportunity to apply for start-up infrastructure through the Canada Foundation for Innovation (CFI) Leaders Opportunity Fund (LOF). The successful candidate for the CRC position in Feminist Media Studies will, in the first instance, be offered an unconditional tenure-track appointment at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor, as appropriate. Lib Congress releases new 'fair use' rules

This should prove interesting in the coming weeks and months. -rick Library of Congress makes jailbreaking legal for fair use updated 12:25 pm EDT, Mon July 26, 2010 US says jailbreaks, hacks OK when purpose is legal http://www.electronista.com/articles/10/07/26/us.says.jailbreaks.hacks.ok.w… The Library of Congress today ruled that breaking copy protection is legal on many devices, including phones, for the sake of fair use. The decision specifically allows smartphone owners to jailbreak and root their phones to run legal third-party apps. It similarly greenlights unlocking the phone for use on another network that allows the practice. Other exemptions also have significant impact on media. The move would let schools and others to break the CSS encryption on DVDs to use short clips for documentaries and other not-for-profit efforts. Video game owners can crack copy protection to study or fix security holes when it doesn't create an exploit by itself. Security dongles, such as USB sticks, that aren't made anymore or easily repaired can also be cracked. Pressure exerted on Amazon to remove text-to-speech from the Kindle has also been thwarted, as the exemptions would let owners break DRM barring the feature or any other conversion to an accessible format. The decision could almost immediately have an effect on Apple, Microsoft and any other smartphone OS designer whose platform prevents the installation of outside apps. While it would not force them to automatically allow software from beyond the App Store or Windows Phone Marketplace, it would prevent them from taking legal action against jailbreakers or app developers that aren't violating any laws. It could additionally prevent AT&T from taking legal action to stop customers from rooting Android phones to bypass its artificial ban on non-Market titles. None of the involved companies has yet to comment on or contest the Library of Congress decision.

Hi all, I was traveling this weekend, so I just saw Darren Purcell's email with the Arlo & Janis comic about social relations and technology. It reminded me that I wanted to post a link to this blog post and comic from Penny Arcade, a webcomic that is pretty big in the gaming world. Both of these are about the (relatively) recent news about Blizzard announcing that someone's real identity would be used to identify them in their online forums -- though they have walked back some of that after a pretty big backlash. The blog post (here) is pretty interesting, and has some good links included within: http://www.penny-arcade.com/2010/7/9/ The comic is pretty funny, but it is profane, so be warned if that's not your thing or if it's not safe for work viewing: http://www.penny-arcade.com/comic/2010/7/9/ On a related note, the Penny Arcade guys often have some interesting things to say about online gaming and technology in general. Most of their comics are pretty sophomoric (as they'd no doubt be the first to admit), but they also pretty smart and are tapped in to the gamer community. It's good recreational reading if you are interested in seeing how the 20-30something gamer demographic feels about the tech world. 'Affordances' is indeed an interesting and powerful concept, used more and more from an interdisciplinary perspective. Besides the excellent references made to the seminal works, you could also check out the following overview texts on the notion: * Greeno, James G. Call for Chapter Proposals Managing Open Innovation Technologies Deadline: 15 September 2010 We invite submissions for an edited book, planned to be published with Springer, on the role of ICT, Web 2.0 technologies and their relation to Open Innovation. As aspects of open innovation are redrawing boundaries for innovation and collaboration, we encourage researchers and reflective practitioners from all disciplines and fields that focus on aspects of technology and innovation in their research or service to consider submitting proposals for case studies (3000-5000 words) or research articles (7000-10,000 words). Chapters are to address aspects of creating new business opportunities by engaging end-users in co-creative activities by means of supporting technology. While contributions should rest on scientific methods and rigor, the style of writing should be practically oriented and suitable for both researchers and advanced practitioners interested in learning about and adopting open innovation. The purpose of the book is to advance and disseminate practically relevant research on systematic practical open innovation, and make research results available to practitioners. The intended target audience is the international academic community and industry (the software and ICT sector as provider of technology and other sectors as adopters), including government, NPOs and NGOs. Open innovation involves all aspects of creating new business opportunities by engaging end-users in co-creative activities. Web 2.0 technologies has caused electronic collaboration to evolve, hence paving the way for companies to invite customers and employees to be involved in the refinement of their offerings. Ideally open innovation will create win-win situations where users get services that are more oriented to their needs and organizations will offer services that are more desired by the market. Suggested topics include, but are not limited to, the following: * Collaboration systems and open innovation * Social software and open innovation * Open source software lessons for open innovation * ICT and inter-/intra-organizational innovation * Management of IT for open innovation * The role of open standards in relation to open innovation technology * Users as innovators in a digital environment * ICT and consumer innovation networks * Lessons from open innovation in practice * Tools for open innovation * Frameworks for deploying open innovation * Technology and applications for open innovation * Design, application and evaluation of ICT for open innovation * Implementation, integration and maintenance of ICT for open innovation * Successful exemplars, such as commercial open source projects and open innovation clusters * Theoretical foundations, methodological issues, practical approaches and underlying trends of open innovation You are cordially invited to submit on or before September 15, 2010, a 2-3 page proposal explaining the purpose, objectives, and focus of the proposed chapter. Proposals should include a 2-4 sentences overview of the general topic area, an outline of major topics/major sections covered by the chapter, as well as contact information and a brief bio for each author. Authors will be notified by October 1, 2010 about the status of their proposals. Authors of accepted proposals will be invited to participate in a developmental workshop in Uppsala, Sweden, on November 5, 2010. Drafts of chapters (approx. 6,000 words) are due by January 15, 2011. Patrons of subscribing libraries can now listen to hundreds of thousands of classical, jazz, world music, and other recordings from smart phones and other mobile devices.
