Academic Career Development Workshop at AoIR IR 11 Gothenburg 20 Oct 2010
by Marcus Foth 29 Aug '10

Academic Career Development Workshop for Research Students and Early Career Academics in conjunction with Internet Research 11, Gothenburg, Sweden, 20 October 2010 http://ir11.aoir.org/program/pre-conference-workshops/ DESCRIPTION For research students and early career academics, universities offer resources that help develop their research skills – for example, critical theory development, literature reviews, research methods, data analysis, writing skills, etc. However, building a successful career in academia poses a wide range of new challenges in addition to the pure academic craft of research. The resources and resilience one needs in order to shape an academic career path often appear ambiguous, particularly in the innately transformative field of Internet research. In response to feedback from AoIR members, this full-day workshop seeks to address this concern by offering a supportive and constructive environment to discuss career development related issues that are of specific interest to research students and early career academics. The first half of the workshop is devoted to the process of transitioning into research student training and supervision. In the second half, we will look at issues of academic leadership. The workshop chairs, along with invited senior academic researchers, will share with the participants some of their off-the-record insights of their career development milestones and the related decisions that have shaped their career paths. The workshop chairs will act as facilitators and moderators who will encourage the participants to join the discussion and share their own views and experiences with the rest of the group. The goal is to establish a peer support atmosphere that bridges disciplinary, cultural, and regional differences in order to distill the common skills and capabilities that are necessary to identify and seize opportunities for shaping one’s own career trajectory in academia. The main topics of discussion for each session will be negotiated with the participants on the day. This is to make the workshop as relevant and practical to the participants as possible. FEES & LOGISTICS · Date: Wednesday, October 20, 2010 · Time: 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. · Location: Chalmers student union building, room TBA. · Fee: 330 SEK · Lunch and coffee included. · Draft schedule on the facebook event page at http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=110293655687140 SUBMISSION & PARTICIPATION The number of participants in this workshop is limited to 25. If you are interested in attending, please send an email by 1 Sep 2010 to both workshop organisers with a single PDF file that contains: · Your name, · Affiliation, · 200 word biography, · 200 word statement expressing your career aspirations, and what you hope to get out of your participation in this workshop. Eds. 2010. Special issue on “Capitalist crisis, communication & culture“. tripleC (cognition, communication, co-operation): Open Access Journal for a Global Sustainable Information Society 8 (2): 193-309. “Capitalism […] is approaching an apocalyptic zero-point” (Slavoj Žižek). What is the role of communication in the general situation of capitalist crisis? The global economic downturn is an indicator of a new worldwide capitalist crisis. The main focus of most public debates as well as of economic and policy analyses is the role of finance capital and the housing market in creating the crisis, less attention is given to the role of communication technologies, the media, and culture in the world economic crisis. The task of this special issue of tripleC is to present analyses of the role of ICTs, the media, and culture in the current crisis of capitalism. The seven papers focus on the causes, development, and effects of the crisis. Each paper relates one or more of these dimensions to ICTs, the media, or culture. I thought that this might be of wider interest. http://gurstein.wordpress.com/2010/08/28/towards-an-urban-community-informat ics-movement/ Processes of both embodied and electronically enabled mutual support, collaborative norm setting, reciprocity, trust building and so on will need to be put to the service of activities associated with creating sustainable environments in cities. There is thus a very considerable scope, even a requirement for concerted efforts towards the development of an urban community informatics movement. Fwd: [IAMCR] cfp - Science Journalism in a Digital Age
by jeremy hunsinger 27 Aug '10

27 Aug '10

> > Call for Papers: ‘Science Journalism in a Digital Age’ > > Special Issue of Journalism: Theory, Practice and Criticism > > Guest Editor: Stuart Allan, Bournemouth University, UK > > In taking science journalism as its focus, this special issue of Journalism will seek to contribute to current debates about the ways in which this important genre of reporting is being transformed by the changes ushered in by digital media. > > Today it is readily apparent that precisely what counts as ‘science news’ is undergoing dramatic redefinition as the convergence of ‘old’ and ‘new’ media continues apace. The challenges facing the science journalist have always been formidable, of course, but the internet and associated digital technologies are bringing to bear new pressures and constraints – as well as creating fresh opportunities for innovation – deserving of our close attention. While the very future of science journalism is being called into question by some, others point to alternative approaches to science reporting that are flourishing online. > > In exploring these concerns, this special issue’s agenda is informed by a sense of urgency. At a time when many news organizations are under intense financial pressure to trim or reduce expenditure on specialist, investigative reporting, it is all too often the case that science news is regarded as expendable. In the eyes of some, it is a luxury increasingly difficult to justify when other types of news will be more popular with audiences (and thus advertisers). CNN’s decision to cut its entire science, technology and environment news staff, for example, provoked widespread alarm when it was announced in 2008. Few commentators failed to note the irony that science issues – such as climate change, stem cell research, evolution and bio-terrorism – were proving sufficiently controversial to attract intense news coverage at the time. > > Accordingly, a guiding theme of the special issue is that current assessments of the news media’s public responsibilities in a democracy can be enriched by inquiries into the changing nature of science journalism. Possible topics to be examined may include: > > • The political economy of science journalism > • Journalists’ uses of digital technologies in science reporting > • Rethinking the news values of science coverage > • Scientists as news sources and the politics of expertise > • The framing of controversy in science stories > • The impact of blogging on science news > • Audience perceptions of science news on the web > • Science journalism and social networking > > Prospective authors should submit an abstract of approximately 250 words by email to Stuart Allan (sallan(a)bournemouth.ac.uk) A selection of authors will be invited to submit a full paper according to the journal’s Notes for Contributors. Acceptance of the abstract does not guarantee publication, given that all papers will be subjected to peer review. > > Timeline > > Deadline for abstracts: 1 October, 2010; deadline for submission of articles: 31 December, 2010.
