CFP: BWe (Basic Writing Electronic Journal) Special Issue on Multimodal Composing
by Lynn Reid 27 Aug '10

27 Aug '10

Hi everyone, Below, please find a CFP for the upcoming Special Issue of BWe. Please circulate widely! Contact Guest Editor Barbara Gleason off-list at bgleason(a)ccny.cuny.edu with any questions. ** ** ** ** ** ** *Multimodal Composing:* *Opportunities and Challenges in Basic Writing Contexts* * * *Basic Writing Electronic (BWe) Journal * *Guest Editor: Barbara Gleason* Traditional print essays (8-15 pages) and webtexts & other multimodal/digital compositions are welcome. *Submission Deadline:* October 15, 2010 *Send inquiries* to bgleason(a)ccny.cuny.edu<https://mail.google.com/mail/html/compose/static_files/bgleason@ccny.cuny.e…> *Submit manuscripts* to bwespecialissue(a)gmail.com<https://mail.google.com/mail/html/compose/static_files/bwespecialissue@gmai…> For the upcoming issue of *BWe*, we seek essays on multimodal writing in college and pre-college composition and rhetoric classes. As Cynthia Selfe argues in the June 2009 issue of *College Composition and Communication*, our profession's continuing tendency to focus primarily on print literacy limits our understanding of rhetoric, discourages students from "identify[ing] their own communication needs" and needlessly limits individuals who have developed expressive identities in a digital age ("The Movement of Air, The Breath of Meaning: Aurality and Multimodal Composing" in *CCC*, June 2009, 618). By widening the possibilities for composing in their classrooms, instructors may establish more compelling and inclusive learning environments for students of diverse races and cultures, language backgrounds, ages, and communication interests. Teachers also may create classes that can better serve the needs of students who have learning differences, e.g., in the areas of vision, hearing, or attention. Along with the potential advantages of incorporating multiple modes of composing into their curricula, instructors may well experience challenges that can obstruct curricular change or dampen enthusiasm of both instructors and students. Integrating new technologies into classes sometimes creates unwanted hurdles. Instructors may experience new technologies as more burdensome than beneficial, especially when faculty are not rewarded for integrating new communication technologies into their curricula. In addition, educational institutions are increasingly demanding that digital texts and multimodal composing options be integrated into their curricula--sometimes before they have acquired the funds or the staff to support these efforts. We already know that we are experiencing a major transformation in communications that is permeating both our daily lives and our institutional realities. Most of us are struggling to develop our own expertise in multimodal composing while simultaneously teaching others to compose in digital environments. We encourage prospective authors to consider both opportunities and challenges associated with teaching/learning multimodal composing. We hope to receive submissions that focus on one (or more than one) of these roles/perspectives: writer, student, teacher, tutor, program administrator. We also welcome reviews of books & web sites that enhance instructors' knowledge of teaching with new technologies OR that facilitate adult learners' expertise in multimodal composing. Finally, since basic writing instruction is moving into new venues (e.g., as test-preparation courses in for-profit companies or in adult education programs), we welcome submissions that explore uses of multimodal composing in a variety of institutional environments. All submissions must be submitted electronically. Both multimodal texts and traditional print essays are welcome. Print essays should be saved in Word or in Rich Text Format before being emailed as attachments. *Citation Style:* Submissions should be formatted in MLA style. *Manuscript Submission* *Deadline:* October 15, 2010 *Email inquiries to Barbara Gleason* at bgleason(a)ccny.cuny.edu<https://mail.google.com/mail/html/compose/static_files/bgleason@ccny.cuny.e…> . *Submit manuscripts* to bwespecialissue(a)gmail.com<https://mail.google.com/mail/html/compose/static_files/bwespecialissue@gmai…> .

MedieKultur: Call for papers: Challenging Genre – Genre Challenges
by Ditte Laursen 26 Aug '10

26 Aug '10

MedieKultur. Journal of media and communication research Challenging Genre – Genre Challenges - new media, new boundaries, new formations Special theme. Editors: Anne Jerslev (guest), Mette Mortensen, Line Nybro Petersen Submission deadline: February 1, 2011 Publication date: Fall, 2011 Today’s intensified blurring of boundaries between media, and between media and their audiences is challenging our traditional understanding of genre. New genres surface at the same rapid pace as old ones are contested or simply deemed out of date. Even though terms such as genre hybridity and cross genres have pointed to generic instabilities and experiments for a couple of decades now, the altered modes of media production and distribution raise a number of topical questions: How might we understand genre today? In which ways might genre be a productive term for conceptualising and comprehending the new digital media landscape? And not least, do we need to change our notions of traditional genre expressions, for example in film and television? While the scholarly literature on genre is substantial in film studies, television studies and literary studies, the concept of genre remains largely underdeveloped theoretically as well as methodologically in our present era of digital transformation. Genre has traditionally been defined as a horizon of expectations and a contractual relationship between audiences and media formats. However, this definition hardly seems adequate in relation to contemporary media characterised, on the one hand, by new genres constantly emerging and evolving, and, on the other hand, by persistent renegotiations of the relationship between author, audience and media product. This special issue of MedieKultur consequently sets out to rethink genre across a wide range of media offerings, including, but not limited to, online social media, television entertainment and news, film and film culture and video games. We thus invite contributions on: · Media convergence and genre · Genre, interaction, participatory practices and aesthetics · Genre and digitalisation · Genre and media production · Genre and audiences · Conceptualising genre – now and then http://www.mediekultur.dk Please note: Although we organize some of our articles into special issues, we encourage your contributions and will happily find a place for articles of high quality regardless of topic. -- Ditte Laursen Forsker i medier, ph.d. / Media researcher, Ph.D. STATSBIBLIOTEKET / STATE AND UNIVERSITY LIBRARY Universitetsparken Dk - 8000 Århus C Tlf. / Phone +45 89462060 CVR / SE / VAT No. DK 10100682 - EAN 5798000791084 http://statsbiblioteket.dk http://www.dittelaursen.dk

Abstract Deadline Extended to 9/7: Global-Local Tensions in New Media
by Ben Aslinger 25 Aug '10

25 Aug '10

Call for Abstracts: Global-Local Tensions in New Media This anthology seeks to add to scholarship on the cultural geography of new media networks and products and the tensions between the “global” and the “local” by examining a range of new media case studies. This project considers new media practices, texts, services, software, policies, infrastructures, and design discourses that enrich existing relationships between creative industries and cultures of production, reception, and engagement. We seek papers with prose and diction appropriate for the undergraduate classroom but that are also sophisticated enough to be read by beginning graduate students. While we are open to case studies that illuminate new commercial and sociocultural practices and debates in any national context, we are particularly interested in papers that examine intersections of the global and the local outside of Western Europe and the industrializing nations of the Asia-Pacific region. Despite this project’s basis in the English language, we are interested in incorporating authorial voices and topics from a variety of national, regional, and subnational perspectives. We seek papers that address one or more of the following subject areas: analog and digital media forms in the global market the role of new media in constructing “media capitals” the role of new media platforms in addressing diasporic audiences challenges of defining the local in the face of complex intersections with the global debates surrounding media globalization in specific local contexts the construction of dominant models of web design and definitions of “quality” web aesthetics vernacular design aesthetics that resist hegemonic these models cultural policy and new media industries global/local visions of the future of computing and digital communication localized internet and mobile cultures, practices, industries, and technologies interrogations of the global, local, cosmopolitan, hybrid, or glocal in regard to new media development strategies and new media infrastructures multi-scalar digital divides global/local perspectives on gaming cultures or game development experiences of place through new media new media networks and nodes economies of import and export Please send a 250-word abstract with a preliminary bibliography by September 7th to either Ben Aslinger (Bentley University, Waltham, MA, USA,baslinger(a)bentley.edu) or Germaine Halegoua (University of Wisconsin-Madison, USA, grhalegoua(a)gmail.com) Our plan is for all 5000-word commissioned papers to be due by March 31, 2011.

Call for Chapter Proposals: Human Rights and Information Communication Technologies: Trends and Consequences of Use
by John.Lannon 25 Aug '10

25 Aug '10

CALL FOR CHAPTER PROPOSALS Proposal Submission Deadline: August 27th, 2010 Human Rights and Information Communication Technologies: Trends and Consequences of Use A book edited by John Lannon (University of Limerick, Ireland), Edward F. Halpin (Leeds Metropolitan University, UK) and Steven Hick (Ottawa University, Canada) To be published by IGI Global Website: http://tinyurl.com/33hy2zw INTRODUCTION Intergovernmental agencies, governments and non-governmental organizations are now using Information and Communications Technologies (ICTs) to collect, organize and disseminate information on peoples' rights, the promotion of human rights, and the protection of individuals and communities at risk. These efforts have moved beyond the traditional human rights regime, as more attention is being paid to rights based approaches to development, and to the interconnectedness of environmental protection, climate change and the wellbeing of humanity. As a result, ICT policies and practices are having an even more far-reaching effect on the enjoyment of human rights by all. Since 2001 ICTs have transformed the capacity of organisations, movements and oppressed communities to highlight human rights abuse, and to advocate for causes and victims of oppression. They make it easier to share and to access information; they facilitate human rights data aggregation and analysis; they offer innovative tactical approaches to campaigning; and they precipitate real-world campaigning and lobbying activities. They enable global participation, and give local actors and previously invisible groups international visibility. At the same time the features that make ICTs an effective tool for the promotion and protection of human rights also make them useful in the exploitation of people and the violation of human rights. They contribute directly and indirectly to the abuse of children, for example; they facilitate the distribution of material that is hostile to racial and religious groups; they threaten the security and the privacy of individuals; and they contribute to the operation of international trafficking and other criminal activities. OBJECTIVE OF THE BOOK Human Rights and Information Communication Technologies: Trends and Consequences of Use will provide a comprehensive examination of the use and application of information and communication technologies in the world of human rights. This will contribute significantly to understandings of the impact of ICTss on the promotion and protection of human rights in societies around the world. TARGET AUDIENCE This book will provide a valuable tool and insight for academics from a range of fields, including information management, information systems, communications, information technology, international relations, human rights, politics, law, and sociology. It will also be useful to international non-governmental organisations, non-governmental organisations, and governments, for policy and practice. RECOMMENDED TOPICS include, but are not limited to, the following: - the impact of ICT policies on human rights; - the role of information in the promotion and protection of human rights; - the opportunities and pitfalls of ICTs for human rights campaigning; - ICTs and human rights education; - Human rights activism in the information age; - communication rights, privacy and free speech; - human rights and the Internet; - ICTs and gender-based rights - Information systems deployment in human rights - Mobile technologies and their application to human rights - Human rights organizations and the application/deployment of ICT - Information security - Information poverty, exclusion, and social, economic and cultural implications SUBMISSION PROCEDURE Researchers and practitioners are invited to submit on or before August 27th, 2010, a 2-3 page chapter proposal clearly explaining the mission and concerns of his or her proposed chapter. Authors of accepted proposals will be notified by October 8th 2010 about the status of their proposals and sent chapter guidelines. Full chapters are expected to be submitted by December 17th, 2010. All submitted chapters will be reviewed on a double-blind review basis. Contributors may also be requested to serve as reviewers for this project. PUBLISHER This book is scheduled to be published by IGI Global (formerly Idea Group Inc.), publisher of the "Information Science Reference" (formerly Idea Group Reference), "Medical Information Science Reference," "Business Science Reference," and "Engineering Science Reference" imprints.
