All, Thanks for a great response for references on Self-Representation - I think I crushed by colleague with information! I have compiled the references I received and put them on a page for an online course (Internet Communications) this coming term. They are roughly in APA. If you notice any typos or other issues (I just slammed this out) please feel free to contact me. http://comm181.pbworks.com/Self-Representation%20Online%20Sources -TED -- Ted M. CFP: Digital Memories (panel) March 2011
by Aimée Morrison 19 Aug '10

19 Aug '10

Digital Memories 3rd Global Conference Monday 14th March – Wednesday 16th March 2011 Prague, Czech Republic I am proposing a panel for this conference to fit one of the general conference themes, “Digital Personal and Community Memory”: “More ways to remember, fewer ways to forget: externalising memory in social media” We are share significant amounts of personal information through social media. As time passes, it becomes clear that we are not simply publicising the activities of our daily lives for the immediate gratifcation of our networks of social contacts—we are also creating detailed, significant, and durable archives of the activities, images, and ideas of our daily lives, a kind of real-time autobiography that persists and accumulates. The repercussions of these practices are not entirely clear and this panel asks, from a variety of perspectives, “What happens when today’s status updates become tomorrow’s public, digital memoir?” Topics might include: conflicts between personal and work life, searchability, how to ‘live down’ a prior Internet life, how memory is restructured by this kind of archiving, community-formation, and more. I invite any interested researchers to send me 300 word abstracts for possible inclusion on this three-paper panel, via email addressed to ahm(a)uwaterloo.ca. (My own paper will address the reconfiguration of memory prompted by personal diary-style blogs of long duration (>3 years) and the peculiar frisson writers can feel, being surprised by content drawn from their own archives, leading to exclamations like ‘I totally forgot that, but now I totally remember.’) Full details about the conference itself can be found at the website: http://bit.ly/r48ej Aimée Morrison Assistant Professor Dept. of English Language and Literature University of Waterloo Waterloo, ON, CANADA

Academic Career Development Workshop at AoIR IR 11 Gothenburg 20 Oct 2010
by Marcus Foth 19 Aug '10

19 Aug '10

Academic Career Development Workshop for Research Students and Early Career Academics in conjunction with Internet Research 11, Gothenburg, Sweden, 20 October 2010 http://ir11.aoir.org/program/pre-conference-workshops/ DESCRIPTION For research students and early career academics, universities offer resources that help develop their research skills – for example, critical theory development, literature reviews, research methods, data analysis, writing skills, etc. However, building a successful career in academia poses a wide range of new challenges in addition to the pure academic craft of research. The resources and resilience one needs in order to shape an academic career path often appear ambiguous, particularly in the innately transformative field of Internet research. In response to feedback from AoIR members, this full-day workshop seeks to address this concern by offering a supportive and constructive environment to discuss career development related issues that are of specific interest to research students and early career academics. The first half of the workshop is devoted to the process of transitioning into research student training and supervision. In the second half, we will look at issues of academic leadership. The workshop chairs, along with invited senior academic researchers, will share with the participants some of their off-the-record insights of their career development milestones and the related decisions that have shaped their career paths. The workshop chairs will act as facilitators and moderators who will encourage the participants to join the discussion and share their own views and experiences with the rest of the group. The goal is to establish a peer support atmosphere that bridges disciplinary, cultural, and regional differences in order to distill the common skills and capabilities that are necessary to identify and seize opportunities for shaping one’s own career trajectory in academia. The main topics of discussion for each session will be negotiated with the participants on the day. This is to make the workshop as relevant and practical to the participants as possible. FEES & LOGISTICS · Date: Wednesday, October 20, 2010 · Time: 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. · Location: Chalmers student union building, room TBA. · Fee: 330 SEK · Lunch and coffee included. · Draft schedule on the facebook event page at http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=110293655687140 SUBMISSION & PARTICIPATION The number of participants in this workshop is limited to 25. If you are interested in attending, please send an email by 1 Sep 2010 to both workshop organisers with a single PDF file that contains: · Your name, · Affiliation, · 200 word biography, · 200 word statement expressing your career aspirations, and what you hope to get out of your participation in this workshop. CFP: 3rd International Workshop on Social Data on the Web (SDoW2010)
by Uldis Bojars 19 Aug '10

19 Aug '10

Please forward to colleagues who may be interested. Submission deadline: August 27, 2010 http://sdow.semanticweb.org/2010/ =============================================================== 3rd International Workshop on Social Data on the Web (SDoW2010) November 8, 2010 co-located with ISWC 2010 Shanghai (China) Paper submission: August 27, 2010 http://sdow.semanticweb.org/2010/ =============================================================== The 3rd international workshop Social Data on the Web (SDoW2010), co-located with the 9th International Semantic Web Conference (ISWC2010). aims to bring together researchers, developers and practitioners involved in semantically-enhancing social media websites, as well as academics researching more formal aspect of these interactions between the Semantic Web and Social Web. Important dates --------------- * Submission deadline: Aug 27, 2010 * Notification of acceptance: Sep 17, 2010 * Camera-ready paper submission Oct 19, 2010 * Camera-ready proceedings: Oct 15, 2010 * Workshop: Nov 08, 2010 Description ----------- It is now widely agreed that the Semantic Web and the Social Web can benefit from each other. On the one hand, the speed at which data is being created on the Social Web is growing at exponential rate, as it offers users a variety of applications for rapidly publishing and disseminating information to a community of interest: blogs, wikis, microblogging, status notification, etc. On the other hand, the Semantic Web plays a crucial role in the management of all this networked knowledge, providing new ways to share and co-operate on the Web using formal semantics. However, while both can be efficiently combined to take into account the social aspect and the semantics of this data, there are still a variety of important issues and research questions that must be considered regarding data that arises from social interactions, such as scalability, reasoning, privacy, context-awarness, security, etc. Following the success of SDoW2008 and SDoW2009, this workshop aims to discuss techniques, methods and applications that are appearing and that are required to manage the data from the Social Web using semantic technologies, taking into account social relations, information overload, aggregations and summaries, trust and privacy, and other related research topics. Topics of interest ------------------ Topics of interest include, but are not limited to: * Applications and tools using Social Semantic Web technologies * Creating RDF-based knowledge using social media services * Data Portability and Social Network Portability * Emerging semantic platforms for the Social Web * Enriching Social Web with semantic data - RDFa, microformats and other approaches * Linked Data on the Social Web - providing linked data from social media sites * Mining and analysis of Social Data * Ontologies for the Social Web - developing, using and extending lightweight ontologies/vocabularies for social media sites * Querying and mining social semantic data * Policies, authentication, security, and trust within collaborative scenarios * Producing Semantic Web data from social software applications * Reasoning for Social Web applications * Semantic blogging, wikis and social networks * Semantically-Interlinked Online Communities (SIOC) * Social and semantic bookmarking, tagging and annotation * Using Semantic Web technologies for Social Data integration Submissions ----------- The following types of contributions are welcomed: * Full technical papers, up to 12 pages. * Short technical papers and position papers, up to 6 pages. * Posters and Demos, 2-3 pages with a description of the application, ideally accompanied with a link to an online demo. Workshop Chairs --------------- * Alexandre Passant, DERI, NUI Galway, Ireland * John Breslin, DERI, NUI Galway, Ireland * Sergio Fernández, Fundación CTIC, Spain * Uldis Bojārs, University of Latvia, Latvia Program Committee ----------------- * Alessandra Toninelli, INRIA, France * Axel Ngonga, Universität Leipzig, Germany * Dan Brickley, FOAF project & Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, The Netherlands * Daniel Schwabe, PUC Rio, Brasil * Diego Berrueta, Fundación CTIC, Spain * Emanuele Della Valle, Politecnico di Milano, Italy * Fabien Gandon, INRIA, France * Gunnar Aastrand Grimnes, DFKI Knowledge Management Lab, Germany * Harry Halpin, University of Edinburgh, UK * Hideaki Takeda, National Institute of Informatics, Japan * Jose E. Question about reimbursing participants doing electronic surveys?
by Reusche, Christian Fernando 18 Aug '10

18 Aug '10

Hi, I'm designing a set of web surveys for research purposes to assess mental health literacy. I will submit my protocol through IRB, and subjects will be protected and de-identified. The question I have is with respect to compensation. Participants will have a verify code, and I wanted to compensate them with an electronic gift card after completion of the surveys. My idea was to call the participant to confirm the verify code, and after verification forward them the gift card. I wanted to know if this protocol seemed suitable, or what protocols are there for compensating participants after completion of an online survey? If you have any insight into this issue, I would appreciate it. Thanks, Christian Reusche

Re: [Air-L] Question about reimbursing participants doing electronic surveys?

Hi, I'm curious about the practice of only compensating participants who complete a survey. Don't most IRBs require that participants have the option of refusing to answer any questions they want, without jeopardizing their compensation? I think if you do this, you should be sure that no questions are mandatory (meaning the participant can't move forward unless something is in the field). We typically include a question towards the end of the survey, asking participants for their email address if they'd like to be entered in a raffle, but with a note saying their address won't be paired with their data. And seconding Fred's note about Amazon gift certificates (which can be emailed) as being much easier than other options such as itunes. N
