IMHO > A Balanced Assessment > Not Only For Academe But Libraries As Well ! /Gerry July 12, 2010 / By Alex Golub After having used an iPad shortly since its release I can safely say that the device — or another one like it — deserves to become an important part of the academic's arsenal of gadgets. [snip] At base the iPad is an anything box that replaces a seemingly endless plethora of other things you already own: It's a TV, a radio, an MP3 player, a compass, a flashlight, a level, a deck of cards, a calculator, a photo album, an alarm clock, a Bible, the Talmud (yes, the Talmud has been ported to the iPad)... the list goes on and on. The crucial question for academics is: What in our current arsenal will the iPad replace? After using the device, the answer surprised me: the iPad makes a lousy computer replacement, but it does a great job of replacing paper. because it makes everyone talk and have discussions about a specific university. because it will annoy some and makes other salivate because it is useful for some things because it is still not something everyone has access because it has potential because it attracts potential grant money because people want to use it because it is quiet a aesthetic statement because, you name it. and none of those reasons has made me decide to buy the first generation but may be I will when it has the features I need for my research and life and then I will be able to have a because that justify the money spent on the device

I think the iPad allows for a more seamless integration of the web and the world. The clamshell design of a netbook versus the simple big screen on a tablet provide radically different experiences. I have always been uncomfortable with the always-tilted netbook screen at conferences/meetings/classes. I feel more connected when what I have is simply a small flat surface that can display whatever I want (papers, email, web-surfing). That the digital content is less removed from the world makes sense to me (perhaps it was all the Star Trek TNG growing up). Also, I have found the keyboard to not be an issue at all. Personally, I take notes by hand (the process of typing them is invaluable to me). My setup is a folding iPad case with the iPad on one side and a small paper notebook velcro’d on the other (call me a craft consumer). Opposed to the clamshell design of a netbook, this setup allows for handwritten notes, checking email and other surfing as well as typing – basically everything all in one super light weight little package that is FAST, does not need to be plugged in during the day, and does not tilt up and remove itself from its environment. All of this lets the device disappear in a way that netbooks don’t, providing a more fluid relationship between the web and my world. ~nathan

CFP: Game Studies Special Issues on Game Reward Systems Guest editors Mikael Jakobsson (mikael.jakobsson(a)mah.se) and Olli Sotamaa (olli.sotamaa(a)uta.fi) Digital games have a long history of rewarding players for their efforts. It can be in the form of treasures, items, easter eggs, highscores, character outfits, achievements, or badges. The prolific use of rewards indicates that they play an important part in shaping the gaming experience. On one hand, it seems obvious that we enjoy being rewarded, but on the other hand, it is harder to understand the fascination with these seemingly empty gestures, given their virtual nature. This special issue of Game Studies is dedicated to the exploration of all aspects of game rewards and game reward systems. We invite our potential authors to think about the topic in relation to game culture as well as game design, but also hope to attract papers exploring connections to other areas of research such as psychology, sociology, economy, education, and law. Possible topics include, but are not limited to: - Means for approaching and understanding game reward systems - Reward typologies: characteristics and qualities - The role of reward systems in relation to other game mechanics - Player motivations in relation to game achievements - History of reward systems within game culture and beyond - Reward systems in social media applications - Understanding rewards as motivators The call is for full papers in English. All submissions will undergo a double blind peer review process and be reviewed by at least two reviewers. Papers should be submitted to submit(a)gamestudies.com. facial recognition software

In very early July, the G20 met in Toronto. (Never let this circus come to your town.) As such, there was the inevitable demonstrations -- mostly peaceful but some violent -- and the inevitable police overreaction. I've heard credible reports of untended broken arm, etc. The usual investigations are taking place. The police are now talking about using facial recognition software to identify vandals. (Seems they grabbed 1K of the wrong people at the time.) One of the most solid areas of research by my mentor Charles Tilly [RIP] is that historically the police harm more people than vice-versa. I've just written to one of the investigating units that they use facial recognition software to identify the police who may have attacked civilians without provocation. Dear Colleagues, a few weeks ago, we announced a survey on Scientific Publishing and Web2.0. The aim of the survey is to gauge the potential acceptance of a Web 2.0 inspired production and dissemination of scientific publications by different scientific communities and by practitioners. The survey is hence tailored for researchers in all domains as well as for people working in the publishing industry. Many of you, indeed almost 500 people, responded and provided their information and opinions on the topic. We sincerely want to thank all those people who participated in the study! Since we want to start processing the data, we will close the survey on July 20th. Hence there are only few more days for those of you who still wish to participate. Post-doctoral Position in Computational Linguistics Applications are invited for an NDRC funded two-year post-doctoral research and development position in the School of Computer Science and Statistics, Trinity College Dublin to work on PaJR, a collaborative research project on building software for patient self management of chronic illness. The project partners are the National Digital Research Centre (www.NDRC.ie) GroupNos Technologies (www.groupnos.com) PHC Research Ltd and Trinity College Dublin (the Knowledge and Data Engineering Group (http://kdeg.cs.tcd.ie) and the Computational Linguistics Group (www.cs.tcd.ie/research_groups/clg)) The post-doc role will involve identifying patterns in patient narrative text and triggering appropriate actions. The successful candidate will have a PhD in Computational Linguistics, or a closely related discipline, such as Computer Science, with demonstrable expertise in as many of the following as possible: statistical analysis, corpus linguistics, sentiment analysis, formal semantics, machine learning. The project requires an individual who is well versed in theoretical issues that impinge on the work, but who also appreciates the pragmatic value of eclectic, practical solutions. They will be highly motivated, with strong communication skills and a demonstrated proficiency in software development. All candidates must be fluent in English, and have good writing skills. This full-time position is for two years' duration, starting at the latest in November 2010 and is supported by the NDRC.
