Permission to reproduce webpages?
by Andre Brock 01 Sep '10

01 Sep '10

For the first time in, well, ever I've been asked by a journal to obtain permission from a website to reproduce a screenshot of a webpage. Not, to be clear, of an image on the page - but of the page itself. I've been offered the option of removing the image and replacing it with a URL, but from an archival standpoint that's problematic. Webpages with dynamic content change all the time, not to mention that authors sometimes change formats/platforms, modify pages, or remove content that was included in the original analysis. I don't want to miss the publishing deadline, but I need to know: "where dey do dat at?!?" (translation: since when did fair use guidelines get bent so badly in academic publishing?) Mobile Digital Interactive Storytelling 2nd cfp - New Review of Hypermedia and Multimedia
by Cunliffe D J (AT) 01 Sep '10

Mobile Digital Interactive Storytelling New Review of Hypermedia and Multimedia Special Issue http://www.tandf.co.uk/journals/titles/13614568.asp Call for Papers Until recently a location's memory could mainly be accessed through media surrogates, such as books, drawings, film or audio files, or through face-to-face encounters with people who were able to knit people into the rich but hidden experience fabric of a place. The integration of low-cost pervasive and personal technology in the form of mobile devices and augmented reality into our everyday life starts to change our expectations about how to perceive the world around us. We are now able to leave traces of our emotional or intellectual experience as virtual attachments to any location. As a result we expect that any place, indoors or outdoors, reveals itself to us by confronting us with connection, context, and uncommon perspectives. Yet, any exploration is in itself an experience and so we desire that the revelation is compelling and enjoyable on an individual and group level. We expect to experience the world around us as a continuous, flexible, and networked exchange of ideas that are routed in where and who we are and how these intrinsic facets of our experience are connected to those of others. For this special issue we solicit novel papers describing approaches in digital storytelling that address the challenges posed by real world environments experienced through mobile devices. We look for work solutions for redefining our understanding of narrative structure and theory through interactivity in computer-generated story worlds that are tightly interwoven with the places we visit, the objects we touch, and the people we meet. Emphasis will be given to work that seamlessly integrate computerised story telling with real world experiences, including but not limited to: * Real-time techniques for interactive storytelling * Story generation and plot management engines for mobile environments * Interactive digital storytelling: theories, methods, and concepts applied to real world environments * Emotion design for storytelling * Educational digital storytelling * Experience design for interactive storytelling * Mobile urban drama * Novel narrative forms inspired by new technology * Storytelling and augmented reality * Collaborative environments for interactive storytelling * Interactive storytelling and gaming * Interactive and pro-active authoring environments * Evaluation and user experience reports of interactive storytelling applications Papers should be not longer than 7000 words including references and should follow the NHRM author instructions. Authors should submit their papers online via the New Review of Hypermedia and Multimedia Manuscript Central site: http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/tham. Important dates September 10, 2010 Paper submission deadline November 8, 2010 Authors notification December 14, 2010 Final copy due Summer 2011 Publication Guest Editors Frank Nack, ILPS, University of Amsterdam, nack(a)uva.nl Annika Waern, Interaction Laboratory, SICS, annika(a)sics.se

online degree programs
by Murray Turoff 31 Aug '10

31 Aug '10

http://sloanconsortium.org/members_list the members of the sloan consortium list universities and colleges with very active online degree programs. Most of these programs emphasize collaborative learning methodology. SUNY has like 50 campus and they have all been encouraged to develop online courses and a student is free to choose a course online at any of the 50 campuses. Hence different departments like philosophy are very strong on one campus and students can find a much wider range of courses in that topic then at the particular campus they are on. In a sense SUNY allows open competition among its campus Some other big online programs are at penn state and the university of illionis where you might find a school of education involved. However, schools of education have not as a rule moved as fast as others into this field -- Distinguished Professor Emeritus Information Systems, NJIT homepage: http://is.njit.edu/turoff

Re: [Air-L] privacy redefined
by Seda Guerses 30 Aug '10

30 Aug '10

The problem with fb-places seems to be a re-iteration of similar problems in the past (athough, I completely agree that location data is something else). for example tagged or commented photos, status updates with references, even wall-discussions are all information that through the fb design becomes information that can be controlled, managed, distributed by many profiles. We tried to generalize the problem, calling such information "relational information" since it is information related to many through the design of the system. We then used Thomas Erickson and Wendy Kellog's idea of social translucence: we asked how friends/communities could develop privacy practices based on social proxies in the design that provide some transparency as to what is happening in the network (without having to do what michael zimmer did when he checked what was visible of his profile through extra-mock profiles). unfortunately, the privacy settings of fb make users believe that they control their information individually. however, the design of fb is such that most info is entered, linked, controlled and distributed by many. this is a mismatch that one can only suspect might have been convenient for fb in the past, but hopefully not for too much longer. more information on the paper is here: The Social Web and Privacy: Practices, Reciprocity and Conflict Detection in Social Networks. http://www.cosic.esat.kuleuven.be/publications/article-1304.pdf and the wonderful article on social translucence is this one: Thomas Erickson and Wendy A. EXTENDED DEADLINE CFP: Workshop "Bringing MT to the User: Research on Integrating MT in the Translation Industry"
by "Венцислав Жечев (Ventsislav Zhechev)" 30 Aug '10

30 Aug '10

---------------------------------------------------------------------- !!! EXTENDED DEADLINE !!! FINAL CALL FOR PAPERS ---------------------------------------------------------------------- "Bringing MT to the User: Research on Integrating MT in the Translation Industry" Second Joint EM+/CNGL Workshop (JEC 2010) http://web.me.com/emcnglworkshop/JEC2010 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- At the AMTA 2010 conference (http://amta2010.amtaweb.org) the EuroMatrix+ Project (http://www.euromatrixplus.eu) and the Centre for Next Generation Localisation (http://cngl.ie) are organising the Second Joint EM+/CNGL Workshop, titled "Bringing MT to the User: Research on Integrating MT in the Translation Industry". The workshop will take place in Denver, Colorado on 4 November 2010, immediately after the main AMTA 2010 conference. Premise: Recent years have seen a revolution in MT triggered by the emergence of statistical approaches to MT and improvements in translation quality. MT (rule-based, statistical and hybrid) is now available for many languages for free on the Web and is making strong inroads into the corporate localisation and translation industries. Open-source MT solutions are competing with proprietary products. Increasing numbers of translators are post-editing TM/MT output. At the same time, there has been some disconnect between academic research on MT, which (rightly so) focuses on algorithms to increase translation quality, and many of the practical issues that need to be addressed to make MT maximally useful in real translation and localisation scenarios. Objectives: This workshop will bring together MT researchers, developers, industrial users and translators to discuss issues that are most important in real world industrial settings involving MT, but currently not very popular in research circles. Workshop Chairs: Ventsislav Zhechev Philipp Koehn Josef van Genabith Call for Research Papers: For this workshop we solicit full research papers with industry or academic background to highlight the real-world issues that need to be tackled by new research and the recent academic advancements that improve translation quality, as well as novel and successful methods for the integration of Machine Translation with Translation Memories or Localisation Workflows. We will accept research paper submissions (reviewed anonymously) for oral presentation and publication. Papers should present clearly identifiable problem statements, research methodologies and measurable outcomes and evaluation. The papers should follow the submission guidelines for the research track of the main AMTA 2010 Conference (http://amta2010.amtaweb.org/cfp-mt.htm) with the maximum length being 10 pages in US Letter format, including references. Please, do not include your name in the paper text and avoid overt self-references to facilitate the blind review process. If a paper is accepted, at least one author will have to register through the AMTA 2010 website and travel to Denver to present it. Topics include but are not limited to: • MT/TM in Localisation/Translation Workflows • MT/TM Combinations • Post-Editing Support for MT • MT and Monolingual Post-Editing • MT Confidence Scores and Post-Editing Effort • Training Data for MT: Size, Domain and Quality • Data Cleanup and Preparation for MT • Meta-Data Mark-Up/Annotation and MT • Terminology and MT • Costing/Pricing MT • MT for Free/for a Fee • Rule-Based, Statistical and Hybrid MT • Computing Resources for MT • MT in the Cloud • MT and the Crowd • Smart Learning from Post-Edits • (Machine) Translation in Context Program Committee: The submitted papers will be reviewed by a mixed industry–academia committee. Industry members: Fred Hollowood (Symantec), Johann Roturier (Symantec), Dag Schmidtke (Microsoft), Dion Wiggins (Asia Online), Jaap van der Meer (TAUS), Manuel Tomás Carrasco Benítez (DGT of the EC), Daniel Grasmick (Lucy Software), Marc Dymetman (XRCE), Nicholas Stroppa (Google), Tony O’Dowd (Alchemy), Jean Senellart (Systran) Academic members: Michael Carl (CBS Denmark), Eiichiro Sumita (NICT Japan), Julien Bourdaillet (University of Montreal), Mikel Forcada (Universitat d’Alacant), Philipp Koehn (EM+), Hans Uszkoreit (EM+), Josef van Genabith (CNGL, EM+), Andy Way (CNGL), Harold Somers (CNGL), Ventsislav Zhechev (EM+, CNGL) Deadlines (all Samoa time 23:59 GMT -11): 09 September 2010 Full Paper Submissions Due 20 September 2010 Acceptance Notifications Sent Out 27 September 2010 Camera-Ready Papers Due Please, direct all enquiries to Dr. Ventsislav Zhechev at emcnglworkshop(a)me.com For up-to-date information, please visit http://web.me.com/emcnglworkshop/JEC2010 For information about the First Joint EM+/CNGL Workshop, please visit http://www.euromatrixplus.eu/cngl2009 Dr. Ventsislav Zhechev EuroMatrix+ Centre for Next Generation Localisation School of Computing Dublin City University http://VentsislavZhechev.eu

advance table of contents of the "Social Science Computer Review"

Dear colleague: Below is the advance table of contents of the "Social Science Computer Review" for Summer 2011. This issue will appear through Sage Online is a few months and in print in May 2011. Other advance (and past) contents are found at http://faculty.chass.ncsu.edu/garson/sscore/contents.htm Best wishes --u Social Science Computer Review Volume 29, No. 2 Summer 2011 Special issue on Web Survey Methods Measuring political knowledge in telephone and web surveys: A cross-national comparison / Zan Strabac & Toril Aalberg Abstract: Fast pace of technology changes makes conduction of high-quality web surveys increasingly easy, and performance of web surveys should be continuously monitored. In this article a comparison is made of the results of telephone and web surveys of items measuring international news knowledge. We compare web surveys of general populations conducted in the USA and Norway in January 2009 with their telephone replications conducted in the same month. Results show rather small differences between web and telephone surveys, particularly in Norway. We discuss the results and make recommendations for use of web surveys and for future methodological research. Words, numbers and visual heuristics in web surveys: Is there a hierarchy of importance? / Vera Toepoel & Don A. Dillman Abstract Respondents follow simple heuristics in interpreting the visual features of questions. We carried out two experiments in two panels to investigate how the effect of visual heuristics affects the answers to survey questions. In the first experiment we varied the distance between scale points in a five point scale to investigate whether respondents use the conceptual or visual midpoint of a scale. In the second experiment we used different endpoint labels of a five point scale, by adding different shadings of color and numbers that differed both in sign and value (2 to -2), to study whether options that are similar of appearance are considered conceptually closer than when they are dissimilar in appearance. We predicted that there is a hierarchy of features that respondents attend to, with verbal labels taking precedence over numerical labels, and numerical labels taking precedence over visual cues. Our results confirmed our hypothesis: the effect of spacing of response options and different endpoints was only apparent in polar point scales and not in fully labeled scales. In addition, our study on two panels, with one consisting of extremely trained respondents and the other of relatively fresh respondents, shows that trained respondents are affected by the distance between response options while relatively new respondents are not. To reduce the effect of visual cues, taking into account the robustness of results, we suggest it is better to use fully labeled five-point scales in survey questions. Response rates and data quality in web and mail surveys administered to PhD holders / Maite Barrios, Anna Villarroya, Ángel Borrego, & Candela Ollé Abstract Despite the extensive use of Web surveys today, there are certain methodological factors related to participant cooperation and data quality which remain unclear and require further study. Here, we compare responses to a survey administered in two formats - electronic, or by post - in terms of overall response rate and the quality of the data collected. Web and mail questionnaires were sent to a sample of 572 PhD holders, asking them about aspects related to their academic career and personal and family data in order to investigate the factors that determine scientific productivity. The Web questionnaire elicited a significantly higher response rate than the mail questionnaire. Response rates did not differ between males and females; however, topic salience had an effect on the response rate. Finally, data quality was higher in Web surveys than in the mail surveys, with fewer overall errors, fewer missing items and longer responses in open-ended questions. Sliders for the smart: Type of rating scale on the web interacts with educational level / Frederik Funke, Ulf-Dietrich Reips, & Randall K. Thomas Abstract Slider scales and radio buttons scales were experimentally evaluated in horizontal and vertical orientation. Slider scales lead to statistically significantly higher break-off rates (odds ratio = 6.9) and substantially higher response times. Problems with slider scales were especially prevalent in participants with less than average education, suggesting the slider scale format is more challenging in terms of previous knowledge needed or cognitive load. An alternative explanation, technology-dependent sampling (Buchanan & Reips, 2001), cannot fully account for the present results. The authors clearly advise against the use of Java-based slider scales and advocate low-tech solutions for the design of Web-based data collection. Orientation on screen had no observable effect on data quality or usability of rating scales. Implications of item format for Web-based surveys are discussed. Reports and Communications Is public trust in government associated with trust in e-government? / Simon Horsburgh, Shaun Goldfinch, & Robin Gauld Abstract The term e-government describes the use of information and communications technology, particularly the internet, for the delivery of public services. As governments invest in e-government, there is only limited knowledge of the extent of public trust in the new electronic modes of delivery; we also know little about whether there is any relationship between trust in government and trust in e-government. This article reports on research designed to probe this issue. Drawing on survey data from Australia and New Zealand, a series of hypotheses are tested pertaining to relationships between public trust in government and in e-government, in the use of information and communications technology and trust in e-government, and support for e-government investment and development. Trust in government was found not to be correlated with trust in facets of e-government service provision, but was associated with support for e-government investment. More intensive internet users were more likely to trust e-government services. Political participation of teenagers in the information era: The case of the 2008 Korean Candlelight Protests / Yun Seongyi & Chang Woo-young Abstract This study examines the environments and the characteristics of political participation of teenage political participation. The 2008 Candlelight Protests of Korea is used as the case of this study. Traditionally, teenagers in Korea have known to disengage from political affairs because they are usually worn by intense academic challenge and competition. In that sense, participation of teenagers at such a large scale shown in the 2008 Candlelight Protests of Korea can only be explained as huge shift in political preference of teenagers and conventional social norms. In that sense, the case of 2008 Candlelight Protests of Korea has shown great implications for the political potential of new media, which is capable of revolutionizing the political socialization patterns of youth. Survey results demonstrated that the internet had become an important tool from which the teenagers collected political information and channels which they utilized to organize and mobilize. Numbers also showed that the degree of the youth's socio-political interests were higher than the adult's. Other notable fact found was that female students showed more aggressive involvement than male students and this could be explained by the difference in the internet usage pattern between male and female students. In using media, adolescent girls displayed more relationship and objective oriented behaviors than the boys. VODYS: An agent-based model for exploring campaign dynamics / Girish J. Gulati, Charles R. Hadlock, & Juliet F. Gainsborough Abstract The literature on campaigns has considered a number of factors that affect whether and how someone votes, including demographics, campaign strategies, and social milieu. Understanding the dynamics of campaigns, however, is complicated by the fact that researchers cannot observe much of what happens during an election cycle. Typically, studies rely on voter recollections of conversations, contacts, and media exposure. In addition, because data are collected at discrete points in time, most models of voter turnout cannot capture the dynamic nature of an individual's interactions during a campaign cycle. Agent-based models offer a way to overcome these data limitations by allowing us to model the dynamics of voter turnout over the course of many weeks as individuals move back forth between home and work environments, interacting with neighbors and colleagues. In this paper, we present an agent-based model of campaign dynamics, VODYS, and conduct three simulations to demonstrate the utility of agent-based models for exploring the effects of contact and context on political behavior. -- Ulf-Dietrich Reips Ikerbasque Research Professor Departamento de Psicología Universidad de Deusto Apartado 1, 48080 Bilbao, España Secretary & Fax: +34 944 139 085 http://iscience.deusto.es/

Theories in your social media research
by Burns, Kelli 30 Aug '10

30 Aug '10

I would like to place my research within a theoretical framework and move it away from mere descriptions of social media practice. I've been looking at a variety of topics within the realm of PR/Ad industry use of social media (brands that use Facebook, reactions to FTC endorsement guidelines by bloggers, crises in the blogosphere) as well as the intersection of social media and popular culture. I am looking for your suggestions of articles that apply theory to the understanding of social media. Any citations you can send would be much appreciated, even if you feel it's not directly relevant to my area of social media research. Thanks so much!
