Andre, So would you say that what is missing in the research projects themselves, or maybe in the overarching research environment, is the "critical" element of the discourse? I wonder if the monoculturalization, you note, is common in emerging research disciplines (using that term loosely as I know there is much debate on internet research as a discipline) as they sort out what foci, tools, etc. to port from other venues? WRT blogging platforms, i find that a lot of work out there ignores the mediating work done by blogging software. Yes, the platforms are content-agnostic (heh), but each platform works differently to construct the discourses published by the blog author and expanded upon in the comments. As Lois pointed out, some blogs hand code, which leads to them possibly not showing up in subject search queries. The workshop will take place in Denver, Colorado on 4 November 2010, immediately after the main AMTA 2010 conference. Premise: Recent years have seen a revolution in MT triggered by the emergence of statistical approaches to MT and improvements in translation quality. MT (rule-based, statistical and hybrid) is now available for many languages for free on the Web and is making strong inroads into the corporate localisation and translation industries. Open-source MT solutions are competing with proprietary products. Increasing numbers of translators are post-editing TM/MT output. At the same time, there has been some disconnect between academic research on MT, which (rightly so) focuses on algorithms to increase translation quality, and many of the practical issues that need to be addressed to make MT maximally useful in real translation and localisation scenarios. Objectives: This workshop will bring together MT researchers, developers, industrial users and translators to discuss issues that are most important in real world industrial settings involving MT, but currently not very popular in research circles. Workshop Chairs: Ventsislav Zhechev Philipp Koehn Josef van Genabith Call for Research Papers: For this workshop we solicit full research papers with industry or academic background to highlight the real-world issues that need to be tackled by new research and the recent academic advancements that improve translation quality, as well as novel and successful methods for the integration of Machine Translation with Translation Memories or Localisation Workflows. We will accept research paper submissions (reviewed anonymously) for oral presentation and publication. Papers should present clearly identifiable problem statements, research methodologies and measurable outcomes and evaluation. A large study of information propa- gation within Twitter reveals that the majority of users act as passive information consumers and do not forward the content to the network. Therefore, in order for individuals to become influential they must not only obtain attention and thus be popular, but also overcome user passivity. We propose an algorithm that determines the influence and pas- sivity of users based on their information forwarding activ- ity. An evaluation performed with a 2.5 million user dataset shows that our influence measure is a good predictor of URL clicks, outperforming several other measures that do not ex- plicitly take user passivity into account. Hi, William and others, I'd like to first express my appreciation for the question of missing data in qualitative and online research and for the excellent responses that make for such good reading and opportunities for thinking on this list. I also offer a few thoughts on the matter. May I first underscore the aforementioned basic tool of triangulation, using other methods of inquiry to supplement whatever ia your primary data collection technique? I don't think this can be overstated, that interviews can add to participant/observation, for example, to give different perspectives. Second, through what people say about each other, data is gained, through the secondary source, even when a person or group may not share that information directly. This information gives a more well-rounded picture than not having access to it at all. Third, we may have to trade off completeness for an in-depth look at some areas. For example, the researcher may know of a splinter group that exists behind the scenes and know from evidence that the influence on the main online community is there. However, without direct access or people talking about it in depth, the researcher may decide to mention it briefly, giving most attention to the main community, All this is predicated on working within what your IRB has approved, of course. -- cheers, andee

Missing Data in Qualitative and Online Research

I know i have expressed this in past papers but their has not been enough work in the area of comparing the distribution of types of communication units in various types of group discussions online vs. normal face to face group discussions. The first controlled experiment comparing the two using Bales coding showed very significant differences. There are a tremendous number of online discussions that it would be interesting to analyze including online courses which has never been done. i suspect just looking at what the instructor said in these discussions vs. whether they had high or low ratings by the class would be a significant result. All types of problem solving discussions are also of interest and information exchange discussions as well. I think missing data in a Qual research is data could make a significant contribution to the grounded concept or theory but researcher neglects or fails to collect. Repeating some phases in data collection/analysis, conducting parallel Qual research or reverse previewing of the research phases seems to help. 2.
