New Book: Gaydar Culture
by Sharif Mowlabocus 07 Sep '10

07 Sep '10

Dear esteemed colleagues, Please forgive this unsolicited piece of self-promotion but I wanted to alert you to the publication of my new book Gaydar Culture. I've pasted some publisher blurb below. A few of the topics covered in the book include: - Grindr and 'digital cruising' - Gaydar, identity and user profiles - Public sex cultures on and offline - Bareback websites - Gay men's visual culture The book is available from Amazon or direct from the publisher's website - where you'll receive a discount for a limited period. http://www.ashgate.com/isbn/9780754675358 Many thanks Sharif Mowlabocus Gaydar Culture Popular culture has recognised urban gay men's use of the Web over the last ten years, with gay Internet dating and Net-cruising featuring as narrative devices in hit television shows. Yet to date, the relationship between urban gay culture and digital media technologies has received only limited attention. "Gaydar Culture" explores the integration of specific techno-cultural practices within contemporary gay male sub-culture. Taking British gay culture as its primary interest, the book locates its critical discussion within the wider global context of a proliferating model of Western 'metropolitan' gay male culture. Focusing primarily on web-based forms and practices in order to address the key issues of sexual and gender identity, with a secondary emphasis on the attending themes of sexual practice and sexual risk, its principal concern is the impact that increasing levels of digital 'immersion' or 'integration' is having on these aspects of 'mainstream' gay male culture. Making use of a series of case studies in the development of a theoretical framework through which past, present and future practices of digital immersion can be understood and critiqued, this book constitutes a timely intervention into the fields of digital media studies, cultural studies and the study of gender and sexuality. Hi Holly, You might consider taking a look to classic Science and Technology Studies (STS) literature on Large Technological Systems. For Instance; Hughes, T. P. (1987). The evolution of large technological systems. In Bijker, W. E., Hughes, T. P., and Pinch, T. J., editors, The Social Construction of Technological Systems: New Directions in the Sociology and History of Technology, number x, 405 p, pages 51-82. MIT Press. ...Star, S. L. (1999). The ethnography of infrastructure. American Behavioral Scientist, 43(3):377-391. Although a quick search at any journal database should give you a more comprehensive and updated results, those are still a good place to start. You might also want to take a look at a forthcoming book @ http://www.openwaves.ws/ Best of luck and, if you agree, I would be interested in reading a copy of your work. -- Yann Bona http://wifi-r.molekulab.net/ >>>>>>>>>> Message: 4 Date: Sun, 5 Sep 2010 16:03:44 -0500 From: Holly Kruse <holly.kruse(a)gmail.com> To: air-l(a)aoir.org Subject: [Air-L] Theories of computer networks Message-ID: <25EF7C05-0E49-4618-A55D-1A1E2F271BAC(a)gmail.com> Content-Type: text/plain; charset=windows-1252 Hi all: I'm curious: what are recommended sources for social and cultural theories of computer networks?: specifically, social theories having to do with the technology's expansion across space. I'm need to make a fairly explicit analogy between the social implications of the historical development/organization and colonization of space of computer networks and another, older communication technology. I don't need to make analogies to other older communication technologies (writing, print, telegraph, telephone, radio, TV, etc. ? or phonograph, on which I've written. I pretty familiar with that literature). For purposes of this project, I just need sources on computer networks. I probably need to re-read Castells, because it's been a while. Anything else? Thanks! Hello, I've been doing a lot of reading for my research on Christianity online. What I've noticed so far is that the books I've read are a little bit old. I'm wondering if you guys have any good suggestions/recommendations on very recently published books/edited volumes on: 1. virtual communities 2. internet research methods 3. identity online 4. cyberculture readings in general. Feel free to email me at myoe.tan(a)gmail.com if you're interested in a longer discussion. Thanks for your help in advance Tan Meng Yoe PhD candidate, Monash University

Narratives in Games
by Peter Zackariasson 06 Sep '10

06 Sep '10

Hey everyone, We are looking for possibilities to offer a two-day workshop for your students, and local developers. I am part of CIN, an organization that offer workshop and consulting to game developers in creating narrative content (when I am not working in the academia). We build this work on extensive experience from working with manuscript in film, TV and interactive media. Although what we offer is not a workshop on how to write long manuscripts and translate these to gameplay. What we instead offer is a method that explain how to structure the work in producing narrative content that have the capability to engage the gamer in creating her own stories. What we are looking for are universities that have an interest in offering these workshop to their students, or inviting local game developers to join the workshop. If you find this interesting, please contact me for more information. Or join the workshop at MIGS in Montreal in November. Do these online transparency, participation indicators jive?
by Steven Clift 06 Sep '10

I am drafting a framework for evaluating local governments around the United States for their online support for democracy. Most academic reviews have focused on candidate website features or those looking at e-government general have had only a few citizen participation indicators (and pretty crude ones). There are some good explorations(1) of online transparency more or less focused on information products (which is 1/5 of the picture IMHO). While this draft guide - http://pages.e-democracy.org/Sunshine_2.0 - will be used initially by local League of Women Voter chapters, I fully expect that it will be used by local reporters, researchers and others. So, what do you think of these indicators? What you would change/add/delete? What are you researching? If you haven't read it already, I think you might find Harvey relevant, e.g. Harvey, D., 1990.
