by Christopher Wong 12 Sep '10

12 Sep '10

Dear colleagues, Perhaps of interest to AoIR members in the NYC area, NYLS is hosting the Innovate / Activate Unconference on IP and Activism at New York Law School on September 24-25. This event will provide a unique forum for collaboration in the IP activism realm, as well as the opportunity to network and kick off new projects and initiatives. Registration for Innovate / Activate is open at www.nyls.edu/innovateactivate. Regular registration is $50, but thanks to the generous support of Google and the Yale Law School Information Society Project, we are able to provide registration scholarships to members of any student, activist or civil society organizations who might otherwise not be able to attend. All of the info, including a great list of confirmed participants and intellectual sponsors, is available on the event website above. Thanks! Research on skills supply to the video games and visual effects‏
by Richard Kunzmann 12 Sep '10

12 Sep '10

Dear Colleagues, We are currently assisting NESTA (the National Endowment for Science, Technology and Art) with an independent review of the skills supply in the video games and visual effects industries in the UK. One aspect of the research is to identify existing academic literature on how schools, Further Education Institutions and Higher Education Institutions can improve the supply of adequately trained graduates to a sector that is experiencing chronic skills shortages. The existing academic literature focuses heavily on the impact of computer games on young people and how computer gaming can be used as a pedagogical tool. There is little about the skills that might be developed at school age to prepare students to become specialists in video games /VFX programming, or the teaching methods that might be implemented to help them. Can you point me in the direction of studies which have been conducted in the UK or internationally? We are particularly interested in evaluations of school programs that might have been implemented to prepare learners in this regard, and so examples of industry-school collaborations would also be appreciated. All the best, Richard

New Sample Available Datasets on PCAT - Coding Comments From YouTube or other Web 2.0 Platforms
by Stuart Shulman 12 Sep '10

12 Sep '10

We have posted a variety of new sample datasets on PCAT ( http://pcat.qdap.net) for researchers who want to experiment with comment analysis. The datasets were compiled using the "InfoExtractor" tool built by Chirag Shah. PCAT is a free text analysis platform that allows you or your team to search, sort, filter & classify the items in a dataset. Further, PCAT has on-board tools for the measurement of inter-coder reliability and validity, generating tag-clouds, and lots of other nifty stuff. If you decise the techniques are useful, using InfoExtractor ( http://www.infoextractor.org) you can go into YouTube, news sites, or blogs to scrape off the comments that you want to study in an XML format that uploads easily into PCAT. These new samples are already posted under "Sample Datasets" when you create a new account: - Climate Change - Climate Change (1000 items)<https://pcat.qdap.net/app/sampleDatasets.aspx?id=8> - HOME (English with subtitles) (1000 items)<https://pcat.qdap.net/app/sampleDatasets.aspx?id=9> - How It All Ends (1000 items)<https://pcat.qdap.net/app/sampleDatasets.aspx?id=10> - Global Warming 101 (1000 items)<https://pcat.qdap.net/app/sampleDatasets.aspx?id=11> - Global Warming (1000 items)<https://pcat.qdap.net/app/sampleDatasets.aspx?id=12> - Gulf Oil Spill - Gulf Coast Oil Spill In-Situ Burn (1000 items)<https://pcat.qdap.net/app/sampleDatasets.aspx?id=13> - Ocean currents likely to carry oil spill to Atlantic (841 items)<https://pcat.qdap.net/app/sampleDatasets.aspx?id=14> - BP Slick Covers Dolphins and Whales (1000 items)<https://pcat.qdap.net/app/sampleDatasets.aspx?id=15> - NASA | Satellites View Growing Gulf Oil Spil (999 items)<https://pcat.qdap.net/app/sampleDatasets.aspx?id=16> - New Underwater footage of BP oil leak at the source (1000 items)<https://pcat.qdap.net/app/sampleDatasets.aspx?id=17> - Immigration - President Obama, No One in Arizona is Laughing (1000 items)<https://pcat.qdap.net/app/sampleDatasets.aspx?id=18> - Shakira Speaks Out Against Arizona Immigration Law (1000 items)<https://pcat.qdap.net/app/sampleDatasets.aspx?id=19> - Gabriella Speaks City Council Meeting April 27, 2010 (847 items)<https://pcat.qdap.net/app/sampleDatasets.aspx?id=20> - Response to President Calderon (1000 items)<https://pcat.qdap.net/app/sampleDatasets.aspx?id=21> - Illegals Threaten To Murder Americans With Axes and Shovels (1000 items) <https://pcat.qdap.net/app/sampleDatasets.aspx?id=22> - Job Market - Video Essay: Jobless in America (50 items)<https://pcat.qdap.net/app/sampleDatasets.aspx?id=23> - Veterans Jobless Rate Doubles Civilians (97 items)<https://pcat.qdap.net/app/sampleDatasets.aspx?id=24> - First Person: Being Unemployed Is 'Devastating' (142 items)<https://pcat.qdap.net/app/sampleDatasets.aspx?id=25> - The Truth About the Economy: Total Collapse (1000 items)<https://pcat.qdap.net/app/sampleDatasets.aspx?id=26> To try it out, set up a free account at http://pcat.qdap.net. A History of the Internet and the Digital Future (release date)
by johnny ryan 11 Sep '10

11 Sep '10

Dear Colleagues, This is a message to announce the Release Date of 'A History of the Internet and the Digital Future' ... Release in the UK and Ireland by Reaktion Books on 20 October 2010, and in the United States by the University of Chicago Press on 15 November 2010. I am delighted to report that Marc Benioff (Chairman and founder of Salesforce.com) Prof Tim Wu (Columbia Law School), and Prof Jonathan Zittrain (Berkman Centre, Harvard Law School) have endorsed the book. Other endorsements come from Suzanne Dirks (Leader, Global Centre for Economic Development, IBM Institute for Business Value) and Phil Madsen (online politics pioneer and manager of the Jesse Ventura campaign '98). Read their endorsements at the pre-order link on AMAZON.COM http://t.co/P9sxD1x This book relies on primary material and first hand interviews and may be of interest to AIR readers. Here is a little of what to expect in the book (summary blurb): A great adjustment in human affairs is underway. Political, commercial and cultural life is changing from the centralized, hierarchical and standardized structures of the industrial age to something radically different: the economy of the emerging digital era. A History of the Internet and the Digital Future tells the story of the development of the Internet from the 1950s to the present, and examines how the balance of power has shifted between the individual and the state in the areas of censorship, copyright infringement, intellectual freedom and terrorism and warfare. Johnny Ryan explains how the Internet has revolutionized political campaigns; how the development of the World Wide Web enfranchised a new online population of assertive, niche consumers; and how the dot-com bust taught smarter firms to capitalize on the power of digital artisans. In the coming years, platforms such as the iPhone and Android rise or fall depending on their treading the line between proprietary control and open innovation. The trends of the past may hold out hope for the record and newspaper industry. From the government-controlled systems of the ColdWar to today's move towards cloud computing, user-driven content and the new global commons, this book reveals the trends that are shaping the businesses, politics, and media of the digital future.
