FW: Blogpost: Open Data: Empowering the Empowered or Effective Data Use for Everyone?
by Michael Gurstein 08 Sep '10

08 Sep '10

This may be of interest in the context of the discussion on e-Gov/Gov. 2.0 etc. It has been quite widely tweeted/blogged over the last couple of days. Mike Efforts to extend access to "data" will perhaps inevitably create a "data divide" parallel to the oft-discussed "digital divide" between those who have access to data which could have significance in their daily lives and those who don't. Associated with this will one can assume, be many of the same background conditions which have been identified as likely reasons for the digital divide-that is differences in income, education, literacy and so on. However, just as with the "digital divide", these divisions don't simply stop or be resolved with the provision of digital (or data) "access". What is necessary as well, is that those for whom access is being provided are in a position to actually make use of the now available access (to the Internet or to data) in ways that are meaningful and beneficial for them. http://gurstein.wordpress.com/2010/09/02/open-data-empowering-the-empowered- or-effective-data-use-for-everyone/ Michael Gurstein, Ph.D. Director: Centre for Community Informatics Research, Development and Training (CCIRDT) Vancouver, CANADA http://www.communityinformatics.net Cape Town, SA (in conjunction with Izandla Zethu SA) http://www.izandlazethu.co.za/ Now blogging at http://gurstein.wordpress.com/

CFP – Zombies in the Academy book anthology
by Chris Moore 08 Sep '10

08 Sep '10

Call for papers: book chapters for the interdisciplinary anthology “Zombies in the Academy: living death in higher education” Editors: Andrew Whelan, Chris Moore and Ruth Walker This book takes up the momentum provided by the recent resurgence of interest in zombie culture to explore the relevance of the zombie trope to discussions of scholarly practice itself. The zombie is an extraordinarily rich and evocative popular cultural form, and zombidity, zombification and necromancy can function as compelling elements in a conceptual repertoire for both explaining and critically ‘enlivening’ the debates around a broad variety of cultural and institutional phenomena evident in the contemporary university. We propose to canvas a range of critical accounts of the contemporary university as a living dead culture. We are therefore seeking interdisciplinary proposals for papers that investigate the political, cultural, organisational, and pedagogical state of the university, through applying the metaphor of zombiedom to both the form and content of professional academic work. We invite submissions from a range of scholars - notably in cultural and communication studies, but also popular culture, anthropology, sociology, film, game and literary studies, political science, philosophy and education - who would be prepared to submit chapters that examine the zombie trope and its relation to higher education from a variety of perspectives. The editors of “Zombies in the Academy” have an agreement for publication with Intellect Press UK for 2012. The anthology will be structured in three sections around the broad general topics of: 1. corporatisation, bureaucratisation, and zombification of higher education; 2. technology, digital media and moribund content distribution infecting the university; 3. zombie literacies and living dead pedagogies. Paper proposals that would fit into these sections would include essays that might: • investigate the current conditions of the academy under pressure from the ‘zombie processes’ variously described as ‘audit culture’ or the ‘McDonaldisation’ of higher education; • explore the uncanny value of the figure of the zombie as a component in critical pedagogical accounts (zombie concepts, undead labour in Marxist theory etc.), including in such accounts as they are applied to the university itself; • analyse the theme of zombies and the academic gaze through the narratives and mechanics of particular films, games, texts or graphic novels; • name the attenuated conditions of work in the sector with reference to its various forms of ‘zombidity’; • evaluate the perceived decomposition of academic standards; • discuss the zombie contagion model as an explanatory device for the circulation of content across multiple media platforms, including into and out of the classroom; • explore pedagogical activities that use or reflect zombie content; • critically investigate the rise of ‘zombie literacies’ - as an epidemic circulated by an unthinking student horde, and/or the undead ivory tower itself; • address the corpse like inertia and atavism of academic distinction and social closure (journal rankings, peer review, tenure etc.) in the face of the apparently ‘lifelike’ models of research production beyond the walls of the academy; • reassess the metaphor of zombiedom, considering how it can be construed not only as a negative critique, but also as a possibly desirable, advantageous or alternative adaptive strategy in academic contexts. Abstracts for proposed book chapters should be 1000 words. Authors are asked to include brief biographical details along with their proposals, including name, academic affiliation and previous publications. Deadline for submissions is 15th December 2010. Please select the most appropriate book section theme for your paper, and submit proposals as an emailed .doc attachment to the following editors: For papers on the corporatisation and zombification of higher education: - Andrew Whelan, PhD. Dear AoIR, World University & School is incorporated and is offering a free, open class on the I.T. Revolution - http://socinfotech.pbworks.com/ - for WUAS credit, on Harvard's virtual island in Second Life starting this Saturday Sept. 11 from 11a - 1p PT. World University is also planning to video-stream live a free UC Berkeley "Biological Anthropology" undergraduate class beginning in Jan. 2011 (probably on Tuesday and Thursday mornings PT), also for WUaS credit. Both courses are listed here: http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Courses#Individual_courses (where other for-credit courses will be listed). World University & School is planning for matriculating classes for online degree course work primarily through partnering with great universities like UC Berkeley beginning in 2014, with interactivity in virtual worlds. Resources are growing at the open, free, editable, wiki World University & School, where we all can teach and learn: http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/World_University. WUaS is like Wikipedia with MIT OCW, Berkeley Webcast, and facilitating people-to-people teaching and learning. Just out: Tom Apperley, Gaming Rhythms: Play and Counterplay from the Situated to the Global
by Geert Lovink 07 Sep '10

07 Sep '10

The Institute of Network Cultures proudly presents the 6th title in the Theory on Demand series: Tom Apperley, Gaming Rhythms: Play and Counterplay from the Situated to the Global Global gaming networks are heterogenous collectives of localized practices, not unified commercial products. Shifting the analysis of digital games to local specificities that build and perform the global and general, Gaming Rhythms employs ethnographic work conducted in Venezuela and Australia to account for the material experiences of actual game players. This book explores the materiality of digital play across diverse locations and argues that the dynamic relation between the everyday life of the player and the experience of digital game play can only be understood by examining play-practices in their specific situations. Thomas Apperley is a Lecturer in Media Studies at the University of New England (NSW), Australia. Author: Tom Apperley, Design: Katja van Stiphout. Printer: ‘Print on Demand’. Publisher: Institute of Network Cultures, Amsterdam 2010. ISBN: 978-90-816021-1-2. This publication is available through various print on demand services such as www.lulu.com. I'm need to make a fairly explicit analogy between the social implications of the historical development/organization and colonization of space of computer networks and another, older communication technology. I don't need to make analogies to other older communication technologies (writing, print, telegraph, telephone, radio, TV, etc. ? or phonograph, on which I've written. I pretty familiar with that literature). For purposes of this project, I just need sources on computer networks. I probably need to re-read Castells, because it's been a while. Anything else? Thanks!
