I mean a) recruiting subjects for a research study through Twitter. I search for Tweets that meet a certain criteria and ask the person to participate in a survey. >Do you mean a) recruiting subjects for a research study through Twitter or b) a >research study about people recruiting individuals for jobs through Twitter?

Best practices for e-learning
by Holly Kruse 02 Sep '10

02 Sep '10

Hi all: For the first time ever, I'll will be teaching an online class. It's an undergraduate communication theory class, and it will be offered next semester. There is a huge amount of stuff that I need to learn, but mostly what I know at this point is that there are lots of bad online classes. So I'm wondering what practices make for a good online class? If there are any resources to which someone could point me, I'd be very grateful. Thanks! Holly ---- Holly Kruse, Ph.D. Department of Communications Rogers State University 1701 W. Twitter as a recruitment tool
by Christopher Sibona 02 Sep '10

Does anyone know if there is any academic research that has used Twitter as a recruitment tool? I used Twitter to recruit for a study I undertook about unfriending behaviors but am uncertain if any other researchers have used this particular recruitment strategy. Thanks. MP3 web player/streaming
by Ismael Peña-López 02 Sep '10

Dear list, This might sound like an odd question... I need to be able to stream quite a huge collection of podcasts online. They are stored in a web (can be accessed through FTP too) server and classified in several folders. To make a long exposition short, I would like to either set up a sort of Spotify in my own web/FTP server or to have your usual flash player, but with the possibility to choose the files you want to play, instead of having it already preset. Or, in other words, with or without having to install locally a desktop application, I would like to be able to play the podcasts stored in my web/FTP server. Any ideas? Thank you very much, i. -- Ismael Peña-López Department of Law and Political Science Open University of Catalonia http://ictlogy.net Av. Tibidabo 39-43 08035 Barcelona

Re: [Air-L] Air-L Digest, Vol 74, Issue 2
by André Brock 02 Sep '10

Thanks to Brian, Gilbert, and Michael. I should clarify: the texts that i'm being asked to procure permission for are actually images. They're screenshots of the three websites' homepages used to help readers get a visual marker for the discourses examined of the article. To me, this complicates the discussion so far; in what way am i violating a website's copyright by reproducing a screen capture of their home page? i can see the problem (kinda, but not really) with reproducing huge chunks of text, or film clips, or audio performances longer than 6 seconds because i know of the deleterious effects on content industries of copyright violation </sarcasm>. i think the comments earlier about the chilling effects of copyright violation are on point. Whether in the EU, AU, or US, we (as AoIRies ('pronounced AIR-rhees')) should consider discussing this in greater detail at Gothenburg* and in this forum to come up with something similar to the ALA's guidelines on copyright and fair use, but focused on Internet/New Media Research. Carry on, André *those of us who can afford to go. -- Andre Brock Assistant Professor - Library and Information Science/POROI University of Iowa Iowa City, IA 52242

Re: [Air-L] Permission to reproduce webpages?
by Philippa Smith 02 Sep '10

02 Sep '10

Dear Gil, But what is the case if a website specifies that no reproduction of the website or its content may be used without permission? As researchers are we still legally bound to ask permission? Kind regards Philippa >>> "Gilbert B. Rodman" <gbrodman(a)mindspring.com> 09/02/10 11:29 AM >>> Two quick comments here, both AGAINST the notion that André necessarily has to ask for permission to use the images in question. First, "fair use" arguably disappears -- in specific cases, if not as a whole -- the moment you ask for permission. At the very least, asking for permission potentially prevents you from asserting "fair use" later (which you might still want to do if, for example, your request isn't answered in a timely fashion), since it demonstrates that you don't believe your quotation of the material qualifies as "fair use." Second, "fair use" isn't simply some technical quirk in US copyright law that allows scholars to get away with what is otherwise morally questionable activity. It is arguably one of the basic rights that enables us -- along with journalists, reviewers, critics, and a vast range of other cultural commentators -- to do our jobs. I'm willing to bet that the publisher André is dealing with is NOT making him secure permission every time he quotes printed texts. He undoubtedly needs to attribute such quotes properly, and there are likely to be restrictions on how much of a source he can quote ... but "fair use" is what allows scholars to quote words written by other people (and reviewers to quote bits of books, songs, plays, movies, etc.) in the ordinary practices of research, criticism, and commentary without having to formally granted permission to do so. Put a different way, "fair use" is one of the major things that keeps copyright holders from using charges of "infringement" as a backhanded means of controlling public commentary about the works in question. cheers gil On 09/01/2010 05:16 PM, Brian Holland wrote: > The AP is particularly litigious in this regard. Invitation: Lift@Weimar - Sustainable Interaction with Food, Technology, and the City
by Jaz Choi 02 Sep '10

02 Sep '10

Lift@Weimar - Sustainable Interaction with Food, Technology, and the City This workshop explores innovative approaches to understanding and cultivating sustainable food culture in urban environments via human-computer-interaction (HCI) design and ubiquitous technologies in urban environments. We perceive the city as an intersecting network of people, place, and technology in constant transformation. Lift Workshop @Weimar explores mobile human-food interaction and the role of interactive media in engaging citizens to cultivate more sustainable everyday human-food interactions on the go. Interactive media in this sense is distributed, pervasive, and embedded in the city as a network. The workshop addresses environmental, health, and social domains of sustainability by bringing together insights across disciplines to discuss conceptual and design approaches in orchestrating mobility and interaction of people and food in the city as a network of people, place, technology, and food. Speakers Mark Shepard, Assistant Professor, Departments of Architecture and Media Study at University at Buffalo, The State University of New York Katharine S. Willis, Researcher / Artist / Architect at University of Siegen Marcus Foth, Associate Professor / Principal Research Fellow at Queensland University of Technology Jaz Hee-jeong Choi, ARC Australian Postdoctoral Fellow (Industry) at Queensland University of Technology The presentations will be followed by a Q&A session with the speakers. "If pictures of you naked end up on an internet site"....
by Mary K. Bryson 01 Sep '10

01 Sep '10

Interesting story ran today on the CBC (Canadian Broadcasting Corporation) news site about naked pictures of a Canadian Judge that appeared online, that cites the learned opinion and judgment of the whole unfortunate event passed by the Dean of Law at a major Canadian University as follows: ³"If pictures of you naked end up on an internet site, it's quite difficult to say you have the credibility to be a judge," said Sébastien Grammond, dean of civil law at the University of Ottawa. Grammond said a judge ultimately represents the ideal of justice and therefore the judge's conduct and image reflect on the justice system as a whole. The judge is, in a sense, the embodiment of the justice system, something the Supreme Court has noted in a past judgment.² So Dean Grammond explicitly (a) decouples responsibility for the act of posting an image of a naked person (of a woman) on the net with the person (her husband) posting that image while simultaneously, (b) links culpability for the simple act of representation itself as it were with the person represented in that image... Truly bizarre (while very familiar) reasoning. http://www.cbc.ca/canada/manitoba/story/2010/08/31/judge-manitoba-douglas.ht ml Predictably, the person represented in those images, who did not post them online, ³requested to be temporarily relieved of her duties as a sitting justice of Manitoba's Court of Queen's Bench.² Read more: http://www.cbc.ca/canada/manitoba/story/2010/09/01/man-judge-steps-aside.htm l#ixzz0yJoew33o Interesting times.
