Re: [Air-L] Permission to reproduce webpages?

Just as an aside and to throw a spanner in the works - I've had a situation where we wanted to use a screenshot from an online newspaper but because the source of the article was Associated Press we had to get their permission as well to reproduce the text. This came at a financial cost. It's worth noting whether websites contain material from other sources that might also need permission. Unfortunately this is a can of worms scenario. CfP Edited Collection: New Technologies and the Changing Landscapes of Leisure
by Mariek Vanden Abeele 03 Sep '10

03 Sep '10

New Technologies and the Changing Landscapes of Leisure - Call for Submissions for an Edited Collection http://madebyjase.com/cfp-new-technologies/ Jason Rutter & Mariek Vanden Abeele School for Mass Communication Research, Catholic University of Leuven Chapters exploring the use and impact of new technologies on leisure experiences are sought for a proposed book. Abstracts are requested by 15th October 2010 with a view to publication following successful review and publisher selection. Technologies and platforms such as Facebook, computer games, streaming media and smartphones, augmented reality services and haptic sensors along with an always-on and ever-connected culture have significantly transformed the Western world spends its leisure time. New technologies have enabled people to amplify and extend well-established leisure practices such as chatting, gossiping, dating, playing games, gambling, watching films and sharing music. Technologies of leisure have allowed the building of new social networks around enthusiasms, supported the new ways to manage our non-work time and offered new options to package, consume and produce leisure experiences. Users now dip in and out of extended networks of friends and associates exploiting loose ties to talk about their leisure and share information. Even apparently non-technological activities such as holidaying, visiting restaurants and country walks have been changed by these new media technologies as users make decisions based upon consumer review sites, add meaning to their leisure by posting images of their activities on social networking platforms, and update their friends on their whereabouts through location-based networking services such as Foursquare. New technologies are playing an important role in managing existing leisure practices and local networks as mobile phones, instant messaging and sites such as MySpace and Facebook are used to plan nights out and other social events and to maintain contacts with real world friends and family. As such new technologies are increasingly central to planning, performing, sharing and understanding leisure as users flow between being consumers of leisure experiences and producers of their own cultural texts. Broadcast and publishing media have developed strategies to involve users in new forms of interaction with their media encouraging user involvement and framing engagement with branding and marketing strategies as a leisure activity. However, as with all technologies and social processes, access and use is not universal: existing inequalities often remain apparent - even amplified - in technologically-mediated leisure. Users who cannot, or choose not to, adopt new leisure technologies are potentially excluded from this evolving leisure landscape. This proposed collection will focus on people’s interaction with new technologies to manage, negotiate and facilitate their leisure. It will emphasise user practice, attitudes and experience and their changing place within developing social, technical and economic frameworks. It will look at how users have adopted, integrated and innovated with new technologies to facilitate both routine and extraordinary leisure. As such, the editors welcome contributions to the collection that engage with the issues above to illustrate the profound social, cultural and innovative impacts that new technologies are having on leisure experience and practice. Authors are encouraged to propose high quality chapters that engage with any aspect of user experience and engagement with new technology and leisure practices including within the following topics: Sociability and Community: · Managing identity and relationships through technology · Online dating, long distance relationships · Using technologies to manage leisure in time-poor lifestyles New leisure forums: · Online virtual worlds, Second Life, massively multiplayer games · Documenting leisure experiences through reviews, photos and personal narratives · Consuming leisure brands via social networks & consumer engagement Mobile leisure: · Taking music, video, ebooks and software into the evolving mediascape · Location-based service and playing the city · Constructing leisure time and space – multi-tasking, managing and work-leisure tensions Alternative and deviant leisure: · Cybercrime - Piracy, bullying, stalking and scams · Pornography and sexual cultures · Internet addiction, obsession and compulsion Leisure constraints and entitlement: · Experience at different life stages, media literacy and online protection · Access to leisure technologies for people with disabilities · Digital divides and experiences of leisure mediated through gender, race and economics Submission of abstracts: Abstracts should be about 750 words in length (excluding author details and references) and outline the key ideas, arguments and structure for the proposed chapter. They should indicate what data the work will use (where relevant) and the primary literature the completed text will draw upon. It should be clear in what way the chapter offers a new way of understanding the area or the manner in which the author(s) offers an innovative approach. The abstract should be preceded by a single sentence summarising the key ‘take home’ message of the chapter. Finished chapters are expected to be in the region of 7000 words long including notes, references and tables. Abstracts should be sent to Jason Rutter <Jason.Rutter(a)soc.kuleuven.be> and Mariek Vanden Abeele <Mariek.VandenAbeele(a)soc.kuleuven.be> by 15th October 2010. Key Dates: Deadline for abstracts: 15th October 2010 Editorial feedback on abstracts: 19th November 2010 Submissions of full chapters: 4th March 2011 Editorial feedback to authors: 29th April 2011 Deadline for revised chapters: 19th August 2011

Thanks for the tip, John: I may use that if I don't succeed in finding the "perfect" tech I'm looking for. So far, I think my pick is Ampache (http://ampache.org/) which does exactly what I intended, though the management of "Catalogs" (where your mp3 are located) is a little bit buggy. Call for Applications: CCI PhD Research Opportunities in 2011
by Axel Bruns 03 Sep '10

03 Sep '10

G'day ! Apologies for the length of this, and for any cross-posts, but this call for PhD applications at Australia's leading centre for research in many of the areas of relevance to AoIR members might be of interest to quite a few people here: PhD research opportunities at the ARC Centre of Excellence for Creative Industries and Innovation in 2011 Undertaking your PhD at the ARC Centre of Excellence for Creative Industries and Innovation (CCI) means you will be working with world class researchers who can offer supervision of the highest standards. Our research activities cover a broad range of emerging issues, themes and projects across the entertainment and creative industries including innovation and policy development; significant project collaborations with Asia; a major project looking at broadband services; mapping the creative industries; IP law; a global cultural futures study and other projects which engage community and industry partners in creative industries from major film studios to the Salvation Army and 'at-risk' young people working as media co-creators. ABOUT THE CCI The ARC Centre of Excellence for Creative Industries and Innovation (CCI) was established in 2005 to focus research and development on the role the creative industries and their contributing disciplines make to a more dynamic and inclusive innovation system and society. With core support from the Australian Research Council from 2005-13, it is acknowledged as a global leader in this emerging field. It is a broadly-based, cross-disciplinary, internationally-focused centre embracing both fundamental theoretical, and highly applied, research in media, cultural and communication studies, law, education, economics and business and information technology, addressing key problems and opportunities arising for Australia, the Asian region, and more broadly in the world, from innovation in and through the creative economy. The Centre's administering institution is the Queensland University of Technology in Brisbane, Australia. The core collaborating partners are Swinburne University of Technology (VIC), Australian Film Television and Radio School (NSW), Edith Cowan University (WA), University of Wollongong (NSW) and the University of New South Wales. The Centre's research projects are organised around four key themes: * Conceptual Modelling * Digital Innovations * Policy and Macro-Trends * Skills and Creative Capital Within these four themes, a number of past and current projects span a wide range of interests and topics. We encourage you to visit the CCI Projects Page at: http://www.cci.edu.au/projects to find out more about the Centre's activities. UNDERTAKING A PHD AT CCI A PhD at CCI gives you the chance to undertake in-depth study in a specific area, by way of independent learning combined with the mentoring of internationally renowned researchers. Graduate research students at CCI have a passion for their topics and fields of research. They take the opportunity to examine important problems at the cutting edge of their disciplines. A list of current CCI research students and their topics is available at: http://www.cci.edu.au/content/current-research-students. Applicants would normally have completed a recognised Australian master's degree by research or bachelor's degree with first or second class honours (division 1). To support you in your research studies, The Commonwealth Government Department of Education provides Australian Postgraduate Awards (APA) which are tenable at an Australian tertiary institution for doctoral and masters research degrees. The scholarships are each valued at $22,500 (tax free) per annum with additional relocation and thesis allowances. Competition for the APA is high. Prospective students, both domestic and international, may also apply for university awarded post graduate scholarships. Some of these offer a living allowance comparable to the APA scholarships as well as offering a number of top-up scholarships. For further information on scholarships, including each University's internal deadlines, see the following links: QUT: http://www.qut.edu.au/research/rhd/scholarships/qut/info/index.jsp Swinburne: http://www.research.swinburne.edu.au/higher-degrees/scholarships/?utm_sourc… Edith Cowan: http://intranet.ecu.edu.au/student/money-matters/scholarships/scholarships-… University of Wollongong: http://www.uow.edu.au/research/rsc/prospective/index.html In addition to the awards mentioned above, competitively-selected top-up scholarships are available to CCI research students who undertake their PhD under the supervision of CCI researchers at one of the following institutions: * Queensland University of Technology * Swinburne University of Technology * Edith Cowan University * University of Wollongong We would like to encourage you to apply. Re: Andre Brock's question "Does AoIR have a specific statement on fair use of Internet/ICT materials for research in the field?"
