I don't know of anyone using second life to teach but that would be a blast, we at Jyvaskyla University are putting together a project proposal on formal and informal learning looking, among other things, at what the formal brings into the informal and viceversa, as well as to the construction of routine through ritual actions. They have been shifted from simple introduction of new ideas and product development to collaborative nature of innovation, in terms of products, processes and services. Innovation has been transformed into open innovation rather than closed innovation, which seems more traditional. Small and medium enterprises (SMEs) play a critical role in this transformation of innovation strategies for business promotion, value gain and economic empowerment of a country. However, little is known on how open innovation is implemented in SMEs and what are the challenges and benefits associated. Overall Objective of the Book By incorporating academic, entrepreneurial, institutional, research, and empirical cases, this book will bring together knowledge on how SMEs can apply open innovation strategies to SME development, and empowering these enterprises to act as a catalyst for the economic empowerment of a country (developed, developing, transitional and under-developed). This book will ascertain diverse aspects of policy issues, economic issues, cultural issues, including numerous opportunities and challenges surrounding open innovation strategies; study relevant risks and risk management; analyze SMEs evolution pattern on adopting open innovation strategies through available measurable criteria; provide suggestions or recommendations along these contexts rehearsing possible operational scenarios; and assist practitioners to gain knowledge in designing action plans to empower SMEs in reaching out the grass roots communities utilizing open innovation strategies. Target Audience The target group dealing with SMEs development through open innovation strategies may accommodate the entire community of a country, ranging from government or policy initiators; entrepreneurs and enterprises; researchers, practitioners and academics; users and intermediaries. Hence, the potential audience of this book will consist of all these stakeholders of an economy. Furthermore, on regional and global scenarios, this book will target development partners, agencies and their mediators. Recommended topics for chapters include, but are not limited to, the following: - Cases on open innovation management, - Open innovation models and processes, - Technology supported cases on open innovation, - Co-creation of sustained platforms for SMEs, - Studying, analyzing or evaluating success cases, - Innovation in marketing and communication, - Application of strategies in entrepreneurial ventures and IPR - Operation, legal interpretation and legislation aspects - Socio-economic impact and implications of open innovation in SMEs, - Knowledge creation and collaboration among various actors, and - Cases illustrating risks and crisis management. Submission Procedure Researchers and practitioners are invited to submit on or before July 15, 2010, a 2-3 page proposal clearly explaining the mission and concerns of his or her proposed chapter. Authors of accepted proposals will be notified by July 30, 2010 about the status of their proposals and sent case guidelines. Full cases are expected to be submitted by September 30, 2010. All submitted cases will be reviewed on a double-blind review basis. Contributors may also be requested to serve as reviewers for this project. A new report suggests that museums are also becoming part of the mobile revolution — yes, if you want to visit the Museum of London without flying all the way to Heathrow Airport, there’s an app for that. [snip] “The museum of London has launched an iPhone application which brings its extensive art and photographic collections alive in advance of the opening of spectacular new galleries next week. The free app, called “StreetMuseum,” takes users to various sites in London where, via their iPhone screen, historical images of the city appear. Over 200 sites have been selected where users can look through their iPhones and see the past emerge.” Now you may ask why someone would be inclined to squint at images on a mobile device, versus using a standard laptop or desktop computer. The advantage of a handheld museum is that users could access photos and details of historic buildings or locations while they are physically at the subject of their curiosity.[snip] What’s really neat is you can superimpose older images over a current shot of a streetscape or building — [snip]. The Museum of London is showing some great innovation in expanding its knowledge beyond the walls of the actual museum itself. CFP Extension: DEADLINE 8th JUNE ----------------------------------------------------------- Digital Methods, Cultural Politics and Feminist Approaches: A One - Day Graduate Conference ----------------------------------------------------------- Monday 5 July 2010 University of Sussex, Media Film and Music & Doctoral School Centre for Digital Material Culture Research in the humanities and social sciences has increasingly incorporated visual media and digital methodologies. At the same time, relatively little attention has been accorded to the way in which feminist approaches to science and technology have informed the research process by contributing to discussions of private and public, materiality, network cultures and identity. This one-day conference aims to examine the emerging field in the intersection of digital methods, cultural politics and feminist theory. The conference hopes to bring together Doctoral students as well as early career researchers working in media and cultural studies, gender studies, digital media, feminist science and technology studies, and queer studies.
