CFP REMINDER: DEADLINE 1st JUNE ----------------------------------------------------------- Digital Methods, Cultural Politics and Feminist Approaches: A One - Day Graduate Conference ----------------------------------------------------------- Monday 5 July 2010 University of Sussex, Media Film and Music & Doctoral School Centre for Digital Material Culture Research in the humanities and social sciences has increasingly incorporated visual media and digital methodologies. At the same time, relatively little attention has been accorded to the way in which feminist approaches to science and technology have informed the research process by contributing to discussions of private and public, materiality, network cultures and identity. This one-day conference aims to examine the emerging field in the intersection of digital methods, cultural politics and feminist theory. The conference hopes to bring together Doctoral students as well as early career researchers working in media and cultural studies, gender studies, digital media, feminist science and technology studies, and queer studies. Themes of discussion might include: -Digital methods and visual media in the research of political engagement. -Feminist approaches to researching science, culture and technology. -Internet research ethics, feminist ethics and research. -The concepts of public and private. -Epistemological and ontological issues in STS and material feminisms. -Actor Network Theory, media studies and Feminism. -Notions of difference and identity in digital networks. -Information flows and the problem of representation. -Gender, biological and information technologies. -Science, technology and social change. The Free Culture Research Conference presents a unique opportunity for scholars whose work contributes to the promotion, study or criticism of a Free Culture, to engage with a multidisciplinary group of academic peers and practitioners, identify the most important research opportunities and challenges, and attempt to chart the future of Free Culture. This event builds upon the successful workshop held in 2009 at the Berkman Center for Internet and Society at Harvard University, organized and attended by renowned scholars and research institutions from the US, Europe and Asia. The first event was held in Sapporo, Japan, in 2008, in conjunction with the 4th iCommons Summit. This year's event is larger in ambition and scope, to provide more time for interaction in joint as well as break-out sessions. It is hosted jointly by the Free University of Berlin and the Max Planck Institute for the Study of Societies and will take place at October 8-9, 2010 at the Free University Campus in Berlin, in collaboration with COMMUNIA, the European Network on the digital public domain. Funding and support is also provided by the Heinrich Böll Foundation. Given this year's theme and the generous support of the Free University's School of Business and Economics, we encourage submissions at the interface of Free Culture and business, although we welcome submissions from any relevant discipline, will be inclusive and will maintain the interdisciplinary nature of the event, as in previous years. Enabled by new Internet technologies and innovative legal solutions, Free Culture prospers in the form of new business models and via commons-based peer production, thereby both challenging and complementing classic market institutions. Greetings, I'm looking at possible qualitative software tools to use for my dissertation research. I know about NVIVO and Atlas.ti - both good both pricey. I'm wondering about cheaper possibilities and am particularly interested to hear impressions of Ethnograph (http://www.qualisresearch.com/) from current and former users. I would also love to know about freeware that would support ethnographic research. (apologies for crossposting -- please RT) <p>We are proud to announce that the <strong>2010 Annual Conference of the <a href="http://www.humanit.org/PID">International Network for Postgraduate Students in the Area of ICT4D</a></strong> (IPID) will be held the 9th-10th September 2010 at Universitat Politècnica de Barcelona, Barcelona, Spain.</p> <p>This is a mainly academic conference, with all its procedures, but much more informal and constructive than usual. Its main purpose is twofold:</p> <ul> <li>To let postgraduate students present short papers about their research in a supportive environment where they can gain positive feedback from other participants;</li> <li>To provide an opportunity to discuss key themes of interest to ICT4D postgraduates. The conference organisers would be pleased to hear from potential participants about the themes they would like to have discussed.</li> </ul> <h4>Ways to participate:</h4> <ul> <li>If you are a postgraduate student — master, PhD — in ICT4D, this is your place. Come and share your research, <em>whatever</em> the stage of development it is in. WikiSym early registration closing soon

(apologies for duplication) Early registration is closing soon for WikiSym 2010 -- the sixth annual symposium on wikis and open collaboration, to be held this year in Gdansk, Poland. The symposium will feature a keynote by Cliff Lampe, research papers and panels about wikis and open collaboration, and an open space track for ongoing discussion. The conference will be held just before Wikimania 2010, the annual community conference of the Wikimedia Foundation, which will offer an opportunity for wiki researchers to meet and interact with Wikimedia community members.
