Announcing 140Kit: Presenting 140Kit An Open, Extensible Research Platform for Twitter
by Alex Leavitt 01 Jul '10

01 Jul '10

Hello fellow AoIR-ers, I'm happy to announce the release of *140Kit*: a simple, free-to-use, open research platform for pulling data from Twitter, built by some awesome members of the Web Ecology Project (known previously for studies of the Iranian election on Twitter, the Twitter reactions to Michael Jackson's death, and a recent initial examination of ChatRoulette). Our release follows. *Presenting 140Kit An Open, Extensible Research Platform for Twitter by Devin Gaffney, Ian Pearce, Max Darham, and Max Nanis* *http://140kit.com/* <http://140kit.com/> Hello world. It’s been awhile since the Web Ecology community last made a peep on the web. Some had been speculating that we had simply up and disappeared, but reports of our demise were greatly exaggerated, as they say. In any case, thanks to the completely amazing work of our affiliate researchers at Bennington, we’re glad today to announce the public launch of 140Kit, Web Ecology’s very own free-to-use toolkit for exploring and data mining Twitter. It’s the final product of the various provisional tools we’ve used to produce our previous reports on the social phenomena of Twitter, and of lead researcher Devin Gaffney’s own work on high throughput humanities. So what does it do? Notably: * It enables complete data pulls for a set of users or terms on Twitter, with searches running continuously. * The ability to download those data pulls in raw form to use for whatever you please. * The ability to stand on the shoulders of giants by mixing and matching existing data pulls to generate entirely new combinations of data and analysis. * And the ability to instantaneously generate basic visualizations around the data (term use, inequality of participation, etc). * Best of all, we are making this platform open and free to use for all interested users*. This includes opening up an API for queries of all sorts, an honest, open, and editable codebase, and plans already in the works to make the program extensible to allow developers to write their own analytics for the kit, on whatever sort of metrics in whatever programming language (stay tuned for details). So, get in there and play, people. And let us know if you have any questions: contact(a)webecologyproject.org You can find this release at: http://www.webecologyproject.org/2010/07/presenting-140kit/ Or via this convenient bit.ly: http://bit.ly/b8ZRRo<http://bit.ly/b8ZRRo%29> Also, be awesome and retweet our Twitter announcement: http://twitter.com/WebEcology/status/17506734698 We'd love you to forward this out to any colleagues, researchers, friends, or even media outlets that you feel would be interested! 6th European Symposium on Gender and ICT - call for contributions
by Anna Croon Fors 01 Jul '10

01 Jul '10

My apologies for cross-postings First call for contributions: 6th European Symposium on Gender & ICT - Feminist Interventions in Theories and Practices Umeå University, Sweden, March 8 - 10, 2011 Information Technology is everywhere, shaping the way we experience our lives, the world and each other. Some digital transformations reveal new possibilities for improving social conditions, while others suggest that social inequality may be increasing. In a changing society, understandings of digitalization and politics become important. Also, the performative and co-constructive nature of gender-technology-work relations points to the importance of paying attention to many kinds of actors (elements) in understanding ICT. As such one of the pressing questions to contemporary gender and feminist research is: How does gender and feminist research intervene in and contribute to new directions and sustainable futures of ICT- based practices? The 6th European Gender and ICT Symposium we will take a closer look at some of the challenges emerging in contemporary society related to new configurations of bodies and technologies. The conference reflects the diversity of gender studies, incorporating interdisciplinary perspectives on information and communication technologies, digital artefacts and systems. Once central focus is on the ways imagination, knowledge and politics intervene with gendered practices in contemporary societies. The theme for the symposium is Feminist Interventions in Theories and Practices seeking contributions that advance our understanding of how gender and feminist research can contribute to sustainable futures of ICT-based practices. We invite you to share your experiences! Colleagues/ I Would Appreciate The Views Of The AIR-L List >>> /Gerry Diffusion of Innovations is a theory of how, why, and at what rate new ideas and technology spread through cultures. [snip] The publication of a study of Ryan and Gross on the diffusion of hybrid corn in Iowa[3] was the first sustainably visible contribution in a broader interest in innovations which was especially popularized by the textbook by Everett Rogers (1962), Diffusion of Innovations (Rogers 1962). He defines diffusion as "the process by which an innovation is communicated through certain channels over time among the members of a social system." [snip] Diffusion of an innovation occurs through a five–step process. This process is a type of decision-making. It occurs through a series of communication channels over a period of time among the members of a similar social system. Ryan and Gross first indicated the identification of adoption as a process in 1943 (Rogers 1962, p. 79). Rogers categorizes the five stages (steps) as: awareness, interest, evaluation, trial, and adoption. An individual might reject an innovation at anytime during or after the adoption process. In later editions of the Diffusion of Innovations Rogers changes the terminology of the five stages to: knowledge, persuasion, decision, implementation, and confirmation. However the descriptions of the categories have remained similar throughout the editions. [snip] Rogers defines an adopter category as a classification of individuals within a social system on the basis of innovativeness. In the book Diffusion of Innovations, Rogers suggests a total of five categories of adopters in order to standardize the usage of adopter categories in diffusion research. The adoption of an innovation follows an S curve when plotted over a length of time.[10] The categories of adopters are: innovators, early adopters, early majority, late majority, and laggards (Rogers 1962, p. 150) BTW: Rogers is an Iowa native who attended Iowa State [:-)] This Weekend I Had An Epiphany >>> Would It Be (More) Useful To Consider Innovation And Its Adoption As A Matter Of One's Time Zone >>> That Is > One's Temporal Orientation > The Past And/Or The Present And/Or The Future ? tic&société numéro « Interactivité et lien social »
by Éric GEORGE 29 Jun '10

29 Jun '10

Fwd: AAUP Conference Insights?
by Alex Halavais 29 Jun '10

29 Jun '10

Hi, all, I spoke at the American Association of University Presses meeting last week in SLC (only one other AoIRer there). It was a pretty good conference, and so I followed up with the program chair on how things were organized. It's a bit easier on him since they have fewer parallel sessions, and they are generally organized by panel organizers. However, it's similar in size to IR. See below. Best, Alex ---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Gregory Britton <gbritton(a)getty.edu> Date: Tue, Jun 29, 2010 at 1:45 PM Subject: Re: AAUP Conference Insights? To: Alex Halavais <alex(a)halavais.net> Hi Alex: The AAUP has their conference planning down pretty tight, but that's partly because they have an office staff to handle all the logistics. As chair, my responsibilities were strictly programmatic--assemble a small committee, pick topics, and draft speakers. We (the committee) also took on the responsibility of promoting the meeting with the social networking things (Facebook and Twitter). This was new for the meeting and proved very effective. The office staff (basically one person focused on this--Susan Patton at the AAUP spatton(a)aaupnet.org) negotiated the hotel arrangements, rooms, field trips, meals, assembling the printed program, and multiple receptions. She also handled all the exhibitors. Susan is an organizational force and has the details down. This is crucial. As I understand it, the AAUP commits to a multi-year contract with some chain hotel to get the best rates, but this limits the cities the board can select from. This partly explains Salt Lake. With the Marriott chain, for every Washington or Philadelphia you are forced to take an Oklahoma City or Salt Lake or some other desperate little town. It's how they spread the conference business around their network of hotels. The AAUP is committed to some geographic diversity so they try for at least one western meeting ever 3-4 years. They also occasionally do a Canadian meeting, but never venture much father than that. Having said the AAUP has their system down, they don't deal with change very easily. Asking for free wi-fi in all rooms seemed to flummox them--hotels charge extra for this--and the idea of marketing the meeting seemed to escape them until we demonstrated how it could be done effectively. Given the location and publishing economy, they were praying for 400 attendees. They got about 535 including some walk-ins which still amazes me. Lost people from the lost tribe? Anyway, please ask other questions -- My best, Greg Gregory M. Fee Waiver for IR11.0 - Deadline extended to July 14
by Alex Halavais 29 Jun '10

29 Jun '10

The original call for papers indicated that the deadline for the fee waiver for this year's conference would be tomorrow. In the hope that we would have registration well before that deadline, I've been remiss in posting details on applications for the fee waiver. The deadline has now been extended to JULY 14. Please read the following carefully, and if you have any questions, direct them to vp(a)aoir.org. Registration information for IR11.0 will be made available shortly. Fee Waiver Program In order to increase the diversity of participation in the AoIR annual Internet Research (IR) conferences, the Association of Internet Researchers will make available up to three conference fee waivers per year. The number of fee waivers will depend first of all upon the ability of the conference budget to sustain such waivers (a judgment to be made by the AoIR Executive Committee upon the advice of the AoIR Treasurer and the local organizing committee) as well as upon the quality of the applications for fee waivers. Applications for fee waivers are invited from student or faculty authors whose paper or panel proposals have already been accepted via the AoIR IR conference reviewing process. All applications should be directed to the Vice-President of AoIR (Alex Halavais, vp(a)aoir.org) and must be received by July 14, 2010. Late applications cannot be considered. Applications should be no longer than 2 pages, and must include the following information: 1) A brief description of how the author’s presentation or contribution to the AoIR IR conference will uniquely articulate and/or represent a distinctive perspective (e.g., of persons and/or cultures) otherwise unlikely to be represented at the annual AoIR Internet Research conference. 2) An explanation of the author’s distinctive circumstances that would warrant a fee waiver. These may include, but are by no means limited to: * exceptionally limited financial resources (e.g., as a graduate student or scholar in a non-OECD country, as a disabled person on a limited income, etc.); * exceptional limits on institutional support otherwise normally available (e.g., travel funds, grant funds, etc.); * other exceptional circumstances that render the usual AoIR IR conference fees an insurmountable obstacle to attending the IR conference in order to present one’s own work. Applicants may also include a letter of support from someone familiar with her / his circumstances, special needs, etc. Such a letter is optional, however, not a requirement. Applications will be reviewed by the AoIR Executive Committee. Fee waivers will be awarded on the basis of the Executive Committee’s collective judgment as to which presentations will make the most distinctive contribution to the AoIR IR conference. In order to respect and protect the privacy of the applicants, all Executive Committee discussions and deliberations of fee waiver applications will be held in strict confidence. The AoIR Executive Committee regretfully acknowledges that there will be more fully meritorious applications than we will be able to award and support. Nonetheless we hope that awarded fee waivers will not only assist deserving scholars and researchers, but also thereby enrich the AoIR IR conferences in important new ways. Best, Alex Halavais

Annamari - my dissertation was about the integration of online and offline social activity within a single community, and how participation became part of a daily routine for the members. You can download it here: http://www.dlfilms.com/professional/dissertation.html < / shameless self promotion> ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Message: 1 Date: Sun, 27 Jun 2010 21:22:26 +0300 From: Annamari Martinviita <martinviita(a)gmail.com> To: air-l(a)listserv.aoir.org Subject: [Air-L] Studying online community Message-ID: <4C2796E2.7060206(a)gmail.com> Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1; format=flowed Hello everyone, I'm just getting started on my PhD studies, unfunded as yet, regarding new social technologies and online communities and would really appreciate any hints, tips and advice members of this list may have on good information sources, relevant publications, events and so on. Broadly speaking, I'm interested in how communities extend from the online to the offline and vice versa, how participation in online communities becomes part of every-day life, how the lines between offline and online communication and relationship building are blurred as access to online social tools becomes ubiquitous. More specifically, I am looking at how new social technologies affect local communities and what developers should take into consideration while creating new tools with a view of fostering online community. I hope to come up with results that offer an insight into how the concept of community is changing for members of a hyper-connected society, and the implications of that change for local communities. My research approach is ethnographic. It would be great to hear from others with similar interests, and also perhaps to discover fellow "sufferers" at similar stages of their academic careers, for a bit of mutual support and encouragement. :) Of course, any advice would be hugely appreciated!
