DATA ABOUT MOBILE PHONE DIFFUSION
by LEO MAURIZIO 20 Jun '10

20 Jun '10

Dear colleagues, I am currently looking for some mobile phone diffusion data by age ranges in EU countries that start before the year 2000. I found information on mobile phone diffusion/mobile phone subscriptions, but the data are aggregated (not by age ranges). Do you have an idea of where I could get such data? Any help would be appreciated. Kind regards, Maurizio Leo Researcher at Polytecnic of Turin Corso Duca degli Abruzzi,24 10129, Turin (Italy)

Hello, I'm crafting a survey for an organization which has a population containing lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgendered, inter-sexed, queer, and ally identified participants. Does anyone on the list have experience surveying these populations? If so, I'd like to hear your thoughts on the phrasing and response items for demographic questions related to sexual orientation, gender, and marital status for these populations. You can e-mail me directly at: tstcloud(a)gmail.com. I will compile and send the responses that I receive to the listserv. CFP Update: Telecommunications Act Rewrite
by Richard Taylor 19 Jun '10

19 Jun '10

CFP Update: Telecommunications Act Rewrite. The recently announced initiative in Congress to update the Communications Act makes even more relevant the upcoming experts workshop on "The Broadband Act of 2011: Designing a Communications Act for the 21st Century" (details attached). Scholars wishing to make their voices heard and interested in participating in the national debate on the future of the Internet and broadband networks are offered the opportunity to do so through this Workshop. Action by Congress may supersede the FCC's proposal to reclassify the regulatory status of broadband and redefine the scope of the FCC's authority. This is an opportunity to provide timely input to policy makers. Submissions by young scholars and new and diverse voices are particularly invited. (See: http://www.dslreports.com/shownews/Congress-Pushing-For-Communications-Act-R ewrite-108571/) Call for Paper Proposals The Broadband Act of 2011: Designing A Communications Act for the 21st Century A by-invitation experts workshop New America Foundation, Washington, DC September 28-30, 2010 The passage of the National Broadband Plan in March 2010; the heated debate over Title II reclassification; the ongoing deliberations regarding the NPRM on Network Neutrality; the Comcast-NBCU merger proceedings; and the April 2010 Appeals Court decision in Comcast v. FCC, all point to the need for a comprehensive overhaul of the Communications Act. The last time such a wide-ranging initiative took place was in 1996. That effort led to a blueprint for competition in local telephony markets, universal service reform, and deregulation of media ownership rules, all of which have had an effect on the structure of the media and telecommunications industries today. But it barely addressed the broadband Internet. Now, 15 years later, it is clear that a new legal framework is required to confront the challenges created by a national network that is broadband based. The Institute for Information Policy at Penn State and the Open Technology Initiative at the New America Foundation are pleased to announce this Call for Paper Proposals (Abstracts) discussing the rationale, needed amendments and steps to be taken in order to bring the Communications Act of 1934 up to date for the broadband era. The selected papers will be presented and discussed during a three-day by-invitation experts workshop designed to bring together up to a dozen American and international experts and to be held at the New America Foundation in Washington, DC, September 28-30, 2010 with the goal of engaging the policy and law making community in a dialogue, and then publishing the papers in an expedited manner. Suggested paper topics may include, but are not limited to: * New legal theories for the regulation of broadband * Outlining and/or drafting a new section of the Communication Act * The need for network neutrality legislation * Amendments necessary to achieve universal broadband * The role of the government beyond basic provision of access * Legal responses to interconnection reform * Restructuring the Federal Communications Commission * The role of competition among broadband networks * A new approach to spectrum management/regulation * Copyright legislation in the broadband era * Advancing the goals of the National Broadband Plan * Any other aspect of the Communications Act that requires attention at this time of technological transition Abstracts of up to 500 words and a short bio of the author(s) should be submitted to pennstateiip(a)psu.edu by June 30, 2010. Please write IIPNAFWS: YOUR NAME in the subject line. Accepted presenters will be notified by August 1, 2010. *The final structure of the conference as well as financial support to participants is subject to budget approval.

Second Call for Chapter Proposals - Networked Sociability and Individualism: Technology for Personal and Professional Relationships
by francesca comunello 18 Jun '10

18 Jun '10

CALL FOR CHAPTER PROPOSALS Proposal Submission Deadline: July 15, 2010 “Networked Sociability and Individualism: Technology for Personal and Professional Relationships,” A book edited by Francesca Comunello Sapienza Università di Roma, Italy To be published by IGI Global: http://www.igi-global.com Introduction The rise of individualism has been recently described in terms of “networked individualism” or “individualized networking” (following Wellman and Castells). Instead of being organized in groups, our lives are articulated around multiple networks, while our forms of sociability are getting growingly increasingly privatized. The new patterns of sociability seem to be built on multiple me-centred networks: each person «becomes a communication and information switchboard, between persons, networks, and institutions» (Wellman, 2004). Far from proposing an atomized vision of individuals, these Authors underline the growing degree of responsibility people experience in their everyday activity of relationship management. The concept that better describes the forms of sociability we are experiencing is, in my opinion, Castells’ networked sociability. Digital technology is not determining this process: it is rather enabling each person to build and manage their own social networks, both on- and offline. The recent popularity of Social Network Sites (SNS) such as My Space, Facebook, Linkedin, etc. shows that there is a growing interest in articulating, making visible, and managing personal or professional relationships through technology-enabled environments. The phenomenon addressed is wider than Social Network Sites, and includes the wide variety of ways in which people are linked to each other. Objective of the Book In the proposed publication we will on a variety of Social Media and Computer-Mediated Communication environments, in order to underline the ways in which people articulate their social relations and the related individualized identity performances. In this book's analysis, Social Network Sites will play a major but not exclusive role. For a better understanding of the identity performances and of the ties’ strength, this book will not only focus on SNS, but rather consider the wider context, includingthe variety of ways in which people are linked to each other (a context where old and new media collide, and where mediated and face to face social relations are growingly integrated). Nevertheless, SNS are powerful playgrounds, both for the user and for the researcher. a sociological point of view, one of the main point of interest of Social Network Sites, let alone their constantly growing popularity among internet users worldwide, is that they represent powerful environments to observe publicly articulated self presentation and identity performances: SNS make such processes visible, trackable, and, therefore, easy to study. Far from constituting an alternative or “virtual” world, social media are embedded in everyday life: using Social Network Sites, people connect to each other in ways they perceive seamless to face-to-face relations. Nevertheless, the above mentioned “trackability” enables people’s awareness (we are now more consciously engaged in our personal network management). This book will analyze this increased consciousness, fully exploring the technology and impact of our social networks in the current social atmosphere. Target Audience  Academics: Scholars, Researchers, Students (Media Studies, Internet Studies, Education, Sociology, Psychology, etc.)  Educators (Primary and Secondary School)  Policy makers  Consulting firms, marketing and communication experts Recommended topics include, but are not limited to, the following:  Networked individualism and networked sociability: theoretical perspectives;  Social Network Sites: data on adoption and use (worldwide);  Personal profiles and identity performances in digital networked media (including comparative and cross-platform approaches);  New forms of sociability, on- and offline (including comparative and cross-platform approaches);  Social Network Sites and New Media Literacy;  Social Media and privacy concerns;  People's different usage patterns (varying according to sex, age, individual attitudes, platforms, etc.);  People's attitude towards specialized platforms; (business and recruiting platforms, social media sharing sites, UGC environments, etc.);  Emerging trends. Submission Procedure Researchers and practitioners are invited to submit on or before July 15, 2010, a 2-3 page chapter proposal clearly explaining the mission and concerns of his or her proposed chapter. Authors of accepted proposals will be notified by July 30, 2010 about the status of their proposals and sent chapter guidelines. Full chapters are expected to be submitted by October 30, 2010. All submitted chapters will be reviewed on a double-blind review basis. Contributors may also be requested to serve as reviewers for this project. Publisher This book is scheduled to be published by IGI Global (formerly Idea Group Inc.), publisher of the “Information Science Reference” (formerly Idea Group Reference), “Medical Information Science Reference” and “IGI Publishing” imprints. For additional information regarding the publisher, please visit www.igi-global.com . This publication is anticipated to be released in 2011. Important Dates Proposal Submission Deadline: July 15, 2010 Proposal Acceptance Notifications: July 30, 2010 Full chapter Submission: October 30, 2010 Review Results to Authors: December 15, 2010 Revised Chapter Submission: January 30, 2011 Final Acceptance Notifications: February 15, 2011 Submission of Final Chapters: February 28, 2011 Final Deadline: March 30, 2011 Inquiries and submissions can be forwarded electronically (Word document) or by mail to: Dr. Francesca Comunello Department of Communication and Social Sciences University of Rome, La Sapienza Tel. +39 06 49918374 Mobile +39 333 9567857 email: francesca.comunello(a)uniroma1.it

2010 Top Ten Trends In Academic Libraries: A Review Of The Current Literature

Colleages/ Mobile Libraries In The News Again And On The Same Day ! [:-) /Gerry College & Research Libriaes News / vol. 71 no. 6 / pp. 286-292 / June 2010 ACRL Research Planning and Review Committee The ACRL Research, Planning and Review Committee, a component of the Research Coordinating Committee, is responsible for creating and updating a continuous and dynamic environmental scan for the association that encompasses trends in academic librarianship, higher education, and the broader environment. As a part of this effort, the committee develops a list of the top ten trends that are affecting academic libraries now and in the near future. This list was compiled based on an extensive review of current literature (see selected bibliography at the end of this article). The committee also developed an e-mail survey that was sent to 9,812 ACRL members in February 2010. Although the response rate was small (about five percent), it helped to clarify the trends. The trends are listed in alphabetical order. [snip] Explosive growth of mobile devices and applications will drive new services. Smart phones, e-book readers, iPads, and other handheld devices will drive user demands and expectations. The 2009 ECAR study of undergraduate students and information technology found that 51.2 percent of respondents owned an Internet-capable handheld device and another 11.8 percent planned to purchase one within the next 12 months.8 Students indicated that they most wanted to use their institution’s e-mail service, administrative services, and course management system from their handheld devices. While only 14.8 percent of respondents indicated that they wanted to use library services, this percentage is likely to grow quickly, as vendors offer mobile interfaces to electronic resources, mobile applications for OPACs increase, and more libraries offer reference services via text messaging and mobile interfaces to their own digital collections. Librarians will need to think creatively about developing services for users of mobile devices and take into account both user needs and preferences and the relationship of services to the academic program of their institution.9 Regardless of the services a library chooses to offer, there will be staffing, training, budgeting, marketing, and instruction implications.
