Request for Doctoral Faculty Participants for a Study
by Jeffrey Keefer 11 Jun '10

11 Jun '10

I just received ethical approval to begin collecting data for a small research project I am working on while en route toward my PhD, and I am inviting potential participants to consider being interviewed for my work. My research is entitled "Faculty Support: Doctoral Students, Threshold Concepts, and Technology Enhanced Learning," and I am looking for faculty members who supervise / tutor / mentor doctoral students, and who have supported these students during periods of significant perspective / ontological / epistemological / worldview change as a result of their studies, to consider participating in my small research project. If you are interested in learning more about this project, you can find the problem, purpose, and research question listed here: http://silenceandvoice.com/archives/2010/06/11/request-for-doctoral-faculty… Please let me know if you or anybody you know are interested in learning more about or participating in my research. Thank you. ----- Jeffrey Keefer j.keefer(a)lancaster.ac.uk Blog: http://silenceandvoice.com Twitter: http://twitter.com/JeffreyKeefer Website: http://www.jeffreykeefer.com LinkedIn: http://www.linkedin.com/in/jeffreykeefer

The Big QR > City of New York Blankets Times Square With Giant QR Codes
by gerrymck 11 Jun '10

11 Jun '10

To celebrate Internet Week 2010, the City of New York outfitted Times Square with giant QR codes earlier today. It’s called “The City at Your Fingerprints” and eleven New York agencies participated in the interactive billboard initiative. Times Square denizens could use their smartphone barcode scanning app to scan the QR codes — which were featured in an animated sequence on the Thomson Reuters building in Times Square from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. ET — and pull up information relating to specific agencies being featured. [snip] These QR codes are certainly impressive to behold and are a nice first try from NYC Media, the agency behind the effort. [snip] !! Libraries > Wake Up And See The Future !!! Fwd: Using Lives: ANU Postgraduate Workshop in Biography (7/5/2010; 9/13-17/2010) Australia pos-grads
by Lois Scheidt 10 Jun '10

10 Jun '10

Cross-posting ---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Craig Howes <craighow(a)hawaii.edu> Date: Thu, Jun 10, 2010 at 2:48 PM Subject: Using Lives: ANU Postgraduate Workshop in Biography (7/5/2010; 9/13-17/2010) Australia pos-grads To: iaba-l(a)lists.hawaii.edu Using Lives: a postgraduate workshop in biography The Australian National University • September 13–17 Are you working on a thesis that is biographical in theme or approach, or draws upon biographical methods? If so, this workshop is for you. For the past five years, the National Museum of Australia’s Centre for Historical Research and the Australian National University’s National Centre of Biography (incorporating the Australian Dictionary of Biography), School of History and Humanities Research Centre, have collaborated in hosting ‘Using Lives’, a week-long intensive residential workshop for postgraduates from around Australia, held in Canberra. ‘Using Lives’ for 2010 will run in the week beginning 13 September. Biography and ‘life writing’ figure increasingly in humanities and social science research. These approaches have expanded in accessibility and innovation by adapting to new technologies, exploring new materials and perspectives, and advancing new agendas. This workshop provides a forum in which postgraduate students can discuss aspects of this ‘biographical turn’ in relation to their work. Core objectives for the week are to: i) generate reflection and debate on issues of biographical enquiry; ii) develop networks to assist in research and professional development; iii) explore opportunities for the presentation of biographically-informed work The workshop consists of morning sessions, led by experts in areas related to these objectives, and afternoon sessions in which students present their research for discussion. The workshop is integrated with the Seymour Lecture in Biography at the National Library of Australia, this year to be given on 16 September by Frances Spalding. Professor of Art History, Newcastle University. Attendance (including lunch and morning and afternoon refreshment) at the workshop is free of change for successful applicants, as is self-catering accommodation at the ANU’s Liversidge Court apartments. Successful applicants will need to fund their own travel to the Canberra. Applications should take the form of: i) a one-page statement outlining your thesis topic, approach and objectives, including your stage of candidature; ii) a brief CV; iii) and a brief letter of support from your supervisor. Applications, and any requests for further information, should be addressed to: Dr Nicholas Brown, School of History, College of Arts and Social Sciences, Australian National University, ACT, 0200, (02 6125 3052) or: nicholas.brown(a)anu.edu.au . Close of applications is 5 July 2010. -- Lois Ann Scheidt Doctoral Candidate - School of Library and Information Science, Indiana University, Bloomington IN USA Webpage: http://www.loisscheidt.com CV: http://www.loisscheidt.com/cv.html Blog: http://www.professional-lurker.com

Neighbors Online Report from PewInternet.org
by Steven Clift 09 Jun '10

09 Jun '10

A hugely important report just came out today: http://pewinternet.org/Reports/2010/Neighbors-Online.aspx My blog post with in-depth "inclusion" analysis: http://blog.e-democracy.org/posts/858 And an opportunity to join the "hosts" of neighborhood online hosts in a Q and A with the report author at: http://e-democracy.org/locals In short: * 27% of American adult Internet users (or 20% of adults overall) use “digital tools to talk to their neighbors and keep informed about community issues.” - Very exciting. * Lower income, rural, and Latino Internet users are being left out - We need to fix this. by gerrymck 09 Jun '10

09 Jun '10

I. Endeavors to Spur the Development and Application of the Internet [snip] The construction and improvement of the Internet infrastructure has beefed up the spread and application of the Internet. By the end of 2009 the number of Chinese netizens had reached 384 million, 618 times that of 1997 and an annual increase of 31.95 million users. In addition, the Internet had reached 28.9% of the total population, higher than the world average. At the same time, there were 3.23 million websites running in China, which was 2,152 times that of 1997. The number of IPv4 addresses approached 230 million, making China the second-largest owner in the world. Of all the netizens, 346 million used broadband and 233 million used mobile phones to access the Internet. They had moved on from dialing the access numbers to broadband and mobile phones. These statistics make China among the top of the developing countries in developing and popularizing the Internet. [snip] !!! Thanks To Michiel de Lange For The Tweet !!! BTW: As I've Highlighted In More Than One Posting /vPresentation >>> "In December 2008, the Pew Internet & American Life Project released The Future of the Internet III, the third in a series of surveys of Internet leaders, activists and analysts that elicited their views on emerging Net and Web developments.
