Survey : Digital Natives with a Cause?
by Vishal Makhija 24 Jun '10

24 Jun '10

Hello, Greetings from the Centre for Internet and Society, Bangalore. I am resending this mail as I guess the earlier one did not have the required hyper-links. Apologies for the inconvenience caused, if any. Founded in 2008, The Centre for Internet & Society (CIS - http://www.cis-india.org/) is a Bangalore-based independent, non-profit, research organisation which is involved in research on the emerging field of the Internet and its relationship to the society. CIS brings together scholars, academics, students, programmers and scientists to engage in a large variety of Internet issues like governance, privacy and freedom of expression, etc. CIS works in the areas of histories of the Internet, digital natives, and a reader on the Wikipedia, enhancing higher education for the downtrodden, and accessibility for the disabled, openness, telecom and Internet governance. CIS runs different academic and research programmes and is receptive to new ideas and collaborations, projects and campaigns from the public. CIS, in collaboration with Hivos' Knowledge Programme (http://www.hivos.net/) launched a project, Digital Natives with a Cause? (http://www.cis-india.org/research/dn/dnrep) in 2008. As younger generations growing up in emerging information societies learn to engage with their geo-political and socio-cultural environments, a form of technology-mediated identity, popularly dubbed as the Digital Native, has been the discussion of a growing public and intellectual debate. These digital natives are transforming the ways in which they understand themselves as well as the world around them while engaging with Internet and digital technologies. Young users of technology are moving towards a reconfiguration of the world, where questions of identity, political participation, social transformation, cultural production, education, and livelihood are being restructured. The Digital Natives Research Programme focuses on producing new knowledge frameworks, vocabularies and lexicons to understand, investigate and support these new citizens or netizens rather who shall be the agents of change in the future. After the initial research (click here for a free download http://www.cis-india.org/publications/cis/nishant/dnrep.pdf/view) CIS will gather responses from young users of technology to help us understand, document and support different practices aimed at social transformation and political participation more efficiently. We believe that the world we live in is changing rapidly and the rise of Internet technologies has a lot to do with it. As young users of technology (as opposed to young users who use technology) adopt, adapt and use these new technologised tools to interact with their environment, new ways of effecting change emerge. This survey is an attempt to capture some of the information which gives us an insight into who the people are using these technologies, the ways in which they use them and what their perceptions and experiences are. The survey will not take more than seven minutes of your precious time and it will help us get a better sense of the way things are. Please click here (http://bit.ly/9tbO9v) to start the survey. We would also appreciate if you could share the link to the survey with your friends and relatives via your blog, tweets or other social networking pages. Your help would go a long way in enabling us to find out how the youth of today are shaping the society and influencing the political/social scenario around them. Please note that the data collected as part of the survey would be anonymous and not used for any commercial purposes. We would also acknowledge your help in preparing the final report. In case you need any further information or clarifications, please feel free to call us at +91 - 080 - 25350955 or write to us at nishant(a)cis-india.org With best compliments, Vishal

email statistic?
by Monica Ann Schepers Riordan (mschpers) 22 Jun '10

22 Jun '10

Hello everyone, I am deep in the turmoil of writing my dissertation results and am wondering if anyone knows of an article/paper that suggests the average length of an email? I have attempted to find this statistic (or even a paper detailing the number of characters in a corpus and how many emails existed within the corpus so I could calculate it myself) but have failed miserably. I realize there are several factors that dictate how short or long an email may be, but in the interest of simplifying analyses for comparison, I would love to find an average. Any help would be appreciated! Thanks, Monica Riordan _____________________ The University of Memphis Department of Psychology mschpers(a)memphis.edu

CFP: M/C Journal 'pig' Issue
by Axel Bruns 21 Jun '10

21 Jun '10

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - 21 June 2010 M/C - Media and Culture http://www.media-culture.org.au/ is calling for contributors to the 'pig' issue of M/C Journal http://journal.media-culture.org.au/ M/C Journal is looking for new contributors. Founded in 1998, M/C is a crossover journal between the popular and the academic, and a blind- and peer-reviewed journal. Our Website at http://journal.media-culture.org.au/ provides open access to all past issues. To find out how and in what format to contribute your work, visit http://journal.media-culture.org.au/index.php/mcjournal/about/submissions. Call for Papers: 'pig' Edited by Donna Lee Brian and Adele Wessell In George Orwell's Animal Farm, the pigs changed the law to read 'Some animals are more equal than others'. From Charlotte's Web to Babe, there are a plethora of contemporary cultural references as well as expressions of their intelligence and worth that would seem to support the pigs' cause. Pigs also give a voice to many aspects of popular culture and feature in fairytales, cartoons, comics, movies and novels. However, simultaneously, the term 'pig; is also synonymous with negative attributes - greed, dirtiness, disarray, brutality and chauvinism. 'Pigs' are also used to name those out of favour police officers, the obese, capitalists and male chauvinists, but also to give expression to the most unlikely events - as in, 'pigs might fly'. As food, pigs are both for feasts and forbidden, their meat the site of both desire and disgust. Their faces on platters and their feet in pots, they are smoked, roasted, organic, free-ranged, acorn-fed and farmed in the worst of industrial food producing factories. Snuck into dishes during the Inquisition to expose false conversos, pigs are unclean and inedible, rich and fatty/fattening, yet at the same time at the heart of tip-to-tail eating and some of the most expensive and desired of foodie products: heritage and Spanish hams, for instance. They are the other white meat. This issue of M/C Journal will be organised around responses to these multiple meanings of 'pig'. As editors, we approach this topic from our own joint areas of research interest of food studies and writing, but we are equally interested in the symbolic importance of 'pig' in all current and past culture and media. That is, for example, in pigs as pets and wild pigs, their place in medical innovation - significant research, for instance, is investigating using pigs' hearts for human transplants, since the size and mechanism of an average-sized pig heart is very close to one of ours - in religion, and in the history of pigs in folklore and myth. Please send a 100-word abstract to the editors at pig(a)journal.media-culture.org.au. Articles of 3,000 words in length should be submitted online at http://journal.media-culture.org.au/ and should be prepared in accordance with the M/C Journal style guidelines, available at http://journal.media-culture.org.au/index.php/mcjournal/about/submissions. Article deadline: 20 Aug. 2010 Issue release date: 20 Oct. 2010 M/C Journal was founded (as "M/C - A Journal of Media and Culture") in 1998 as a place of public intellectualism analysing and critiquing the meeting of media and culture. Contributors are directed to past issues of M/C Journal for examples of style and content, and to the submissions page for comprehensive article submission guidelines. M/C Journal articles are blind peer-reviewed. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Further M/C Journal issues scheduled for 2010/11: 'waste': article deadline 25 June 2010, release date 25 Aug. 2010 'pig': article deadline 20 Aug. 2010, release date 20 Oct. 2010 'coalition': article deadline 15 Oct. 2010, release date 15 Dec. 2010 'doubt': article deadline 21 Jan. 2011, release date 23 Mar. 2011 'diaspora': article deadline 4 Mar. 2011, release date 4 May 2011 --------------------------------------------------------------------------- M/C - Media and Culture is located at <http://www.media-culture.org.au/>. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- M/C Journal is online at <http://journal.media-culture.org.au/>.
