Extended Call For Papers/ Special Issue in collaboration with PEP-NET: Sustainable eParticipation
by Noella Edelmann 17 Jun '10

17 Jun '10

Please distribute to your colleagues, students and networks - apologies for cross-posting! ************************************************************************ Extended Call For Papers - eJournal of eDemocracy and Open Government (JeDEM) Issue 3/ September 2010 (ISSN: 2075-9517) www.jedem.org Special Issue in collaboration with PEP-NET: Sustainable eParticipation Guest Editors Rolf Luehrs (PEP-NET, TuTech Innovation GmbH, D) Francesco Molinari (SmartIntuitions Ltd., CY) In collaboration with the European Network for eParticipation (http://pep-net.eu/) the Centre for E-Government at the Danube University Krems invites you to submit an article for the third issue of the eJournal of eDemocracy and Open Government (JeDEM). The eJournal of eDemocracy and Open Government addresses the theory and practice in the areas of eDemocracy and Open Government as well as eGovernment, eParticipation, eDeliberation and eSociety. The aim is to impact the quality, visibility, efficiency and use of research and work in eDemocracy, Open Government and related fields. Call for Papers The past decade has seen a significant increase in the number, variety and quality of eParticipation trials, particularly in Western and Southern European countries. The impulse of the European Parliament and the financial support by the Commission have been instrumental in establishing a pan-European community of practice, made up of academia, governments and solution providers from virtually all EU Member States. However, on the evaluative side, many projects that were seen through to their conclusion apparently failed to meet expectations. The most evident limitations are the typically low number of active participants and the relatively poor impact of the (majority of) projects. Although it is often taken for granted that ICT-supported political participation will be of increased importance in the future, the question of how to enhance the sustainability of eParticipation projects has not yet been convincingly answered. In times where most of the European countries have to cope with a difficult financial situation, eParticipation supporters and particularly Public Administration officials will be put under even more pressure to show that the required resources lead to tangible results and create real value for the citizens. In this volume of JEDEM we are calling for theoretical and practical papers addressing the challenges of Sustainable eParticipation. -review of successful examples of implementation -institutional, legal, social and economic aspects of sustainable eParticipation -ICT supported co-creation of public services -eParticipation and Gov 2.0 -Living Labs and eParticipation The journal encourages critical, multi-disciplinary approaches including political science, legal studies, economics, sociology and psychology so as to better understand and support societal and institutional needs, developments and changes. We look forward to your submission in one of the following categories (maximum length 15 pages excluding references): * Scientific Research Papers (research in progress or completed) - anonymous peer review; * Case Studies anonymous peer review; * Project Descriptions (focus on practitioners) - editorial review; * Part IV: Reflections (Literature reviews, comments, discussions, and interviews) - no review. Important Dates: Extended Deadline for submission: 21 July 2010 Notification of acceptance: 21 August 2010 Camera-ready paper: 13 September 2010 JeDEM Issue 3 will be online September 2010 * Submission procedure: http://www.jedem.org/about/submissions#authorGuidelines and format template: http://www.jedem.org/public/journals/1/template-0.dot JeDEM is a peer-reviewed, Open Access journal. Libraries and Mobile Technology: An Introduction to Public Policy Considerations
by gerrymck 16 Jun '10

16 Jun '10

There’s an App for That! Libraries and Mobile Technology: An Introduction to Public Policy Considerations / Timothy Vollmer [ALA Office Of Information Technology Policy / Policy Brief No. 3, June 2010] As the information revolution continues to unfold, libraries will experiment withmobile devices and services to support the information needs of their users whereverthey may be. The adoption of mobile technology alters the traditional relationships between libraries and their users and introduces novel challenges to reader privacy. At the same time, the proliferation of mobile devices and services raises issues of access to information in the digital age, including content ownership and licensing, digital rights management, and accessibility. This policy brief explores some of these issues, and is intended to stimulate further community discussion and policy analysis [snip] Enabling Libraries to Provide Expanded Services to Users Libraries can better serve their users by embracing the growing capabilities of mobile technology. They can promote and expand their existing services by offering mobile access to their websites and online public access catalogs; by supplying on-the-go mobile reference services; and by providing mobile access to e-books, journals, video, audio books, and multimedia content. [snip] Mobile devices and services therefore provide tremendous flexibility for those who wish to take advantage of library services. With a simple 3G connection, a user lying on a beach can access e-books and multimedia content via his or her local library. If a smartphone can always access a network, content can be continually streamed to the device over the network, providing content on demand and making it unnecessary to maintain a local copy of the material. By going mobile, then, a library takes a giant step toward becoming a round-the-clock service. [snip] Conclusions and Recommendations Mobile technology holds great promise for enabling libraries to provide enhanced services in a form users increasingly are demanding. If this promise is to be fully realized, however, libraries will need to conduct analyses and make smart decisions to address the issues outlined above, support staff education and explore partnerships and new funding models, and be prepared to compromise with respect to their traditional information delivery models. Jenny Cool e-seminar on Cyborganic ethnography, 22 June to 6 July
by John Postill 16 Jun '10

16 Jun '10

Dear All The EASA Media Anthropology Network will be holding its 33rd e-seminar from this coming Tuesday 22 June to Tuesday 6 July 2010 via its mailing list. Jenny Cool (University of Southern California) will be presenting a working paper titled "The mutual co-construction of online and onground in Cyborganic: making an ethnography of networked social media speak to challenges of the posthuman" - see abstract below. Antoni Roig (Open University of Catalonia) will be the discussant. A PDF of this paper is now available on our site at http://www.media-anthropology.net/index.php/e-seminars (with thanks to Philipp Budka). These sessions are free and open to anyone with a genuine interest in the anthropology of media. To subscribe to the mailing list, go to http://www.media-anthropology.net/index.php/mailing-list John Dr John Postill C3 Research Institute (C3RI) Sheffield Hallam University Sheffield S1 2NU United Kingdom http://johnpostill.wordpress.com/ ************* Abstract Cyborganic, the subject of this study, was a San Francisco community whose members brought Wired magazine online, launched Hotwired; led the open source Apache project; and staffed and started dozens of Internet enterprises-from Craig's List to Organic Online-during the first decade of the Web's growth as a popular platform (1993-2003). The imaginaries, practices, and genres of networked social media developed in this group figured in the initial development of Web publishing and prefigured contemporary phenomena such as Facebook and a host of other media collectively known as "Web 2.0." While my ethnography examines the symbiosis of online and face-to-face sociality in the growth of Web publishing, this paper focuses on that symbiosis at a more micro-level, looking at specific forms and practices of networked social media in Cyborganic that have become predominant on the contemporary U.S Internet. Anthropologists have challenged the assumed "isomorphism between space, place, and culture" (Gupta and Ferguson 1992: 34) and have theorized "technological infrastructures as sites for the production of locality" without a necessarily geographic referent (Ito 1999:2). Despite this decoupling and the tendency to associate online sociality with fragmentation and dematerialization, my Cyborganic study demonstrates that the intermediation of online and onground can work to consolidate and extend, rather than attenuate, affiliations based on place and embodiment that anthropologists have long seen as defining sources of identity and cultural difference.

Exploring Produsage cfp - New Review of Hypermedia and Multimedia
by Cunliffe D J (AT) 15 Jun '10

15 Jun '10

Exploring Produsage New Review of Hypermedia and Multimedia Special Issue Call for papers The concept of produsage points to the shift away from conventional producer/consumer relationships, and highlights the more fluid roles of users and contributors within social media environments. Participants in open source projects, in Wikipedia, in YouTube and Second Life are no longer merely consuming or using preproduced material, but neither are they at all times acting as fully self-determined producers of fully formed new works; rather, they occupy a hybrid position as produsers of content. Produsage processes are now evident across a wide range of activities - mainly online, but increasingly also extending to the offline world - from citizen journalism and communal knowledge management through to collaborative artistic activities, from learner-led education models to citizen engagement in political processes. As such models establish themselves, what does an examination through the lens of the produsage framework reveal about their internal operations? How do they affect the existing institutional, industrial, social, and cultural environments within which they operate? How may they be guarded against cooptation and exploitation by corporate interests? What possible futures do they foreshadow? Potential contributions to this special issue could include, but are not limited to, areas such as: * Conceptualising produsage: theoretical frameworks for examining produsage activities, practical examples of produsage projects, ... * Historical and comparative perspectives: produsage and other forms of collaborative and commons-based work, precedents of produsage, ... * Technologies and practices of produsage: collaborative dynamics of leading produsage spaces, impact of the technological foundations of produsage, ... * Empirical perspectives on produsage: case studies of produsage and its effects, ethnographic research into produsage communities, ... * Methodology: research approaches to the study of produsage, tracking and evaluating produser activities, ... * Critical perspectives: economic, legal, pedagogic, sociological perspectives on produsage, ... For this special issue of NRHM, we invite contributions on these and other topics related to produsage. Full papers should be around 7,000 words; shorter papers (around 3,000 words) for technical notes, industry perspectives or opinion pieces are also welcome. More detailed instructions for authors can be found online: http://www.tandf.co.uk/journals/nrhm. Queries should be directed to the Guest Editors. Authors should submit their papers online via the New Review of Hypermedia and Multimedia Manuscript Central site: http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/tham Important dates July 16, 2010 Paper submission deadline September 24, 2010 Author notification October 15, 2010 Final copy due Spring 2011 Publication Guest Editors Axel Bruns, Queensland University of Technology, a.bruns(a)qut.edu.au Jan Schmidt, the Hans-Bredow-Institute for Media Research (Hamburg), j.schmidt(a)hans-bredow-institut.de

CALL FOR CASEBOOK CHAPTERS
by Hakikur Rahman 14 Jun '10

14 Jun '10

(The second call for a casebook, which is the second book on Open Innovation and SMEs to be edited by the undersigned. However, if you have a prospective manuscript on theoretical aspects, which the first book covers, we have space for a few chapters.) CALL FOR CASEBOOK CHAPTERS Proposal Submission Deadline: July 15, 2010 Full Chapter Submission Deadline: September 30, 2010 SMEs and Open Innovation: Global Cases and Initiatives A book edited by Dr. Hakikur Rahman and Dr. Isabel Ramos, University of Minho, Portugal. To be published by IGI Global: <http://www.igi-global.com/requests/details.asp?ID=844>http://www.igi-global.com/requests/details.asp?ID=844 Introduction Recent years have seen a paradigm shift in operational and management aspects of successful entrepreneurship and value addition within an enterprise. They have been shifted from simple introduction of new ideas and product development to collaborative nature of innovation, in terms of products, processes and services. Innovation has been transformed into open innovation rather than closed innovation, which seems more traditional. Small and medium enterprises (SMEs) play a critical role in this transformation of innovation strategies for business promotion, value gain and economic empowerment of a country. However, little is known on how open innovation is implemented in SMEs and what are the challenges and benefits associated. Overall Objective of the Book By incorporating academic, entrepreneurial, institutional, research, and empirical cases, this book will bring together knowledge on how SMEs can apply open innovation strategies to SME development, and empowering these enterprises to act as a catalyst for the economic empowerment of a country (developed, developing, transitional and under-developed). This book will ascertain diverse aspects of policy issues, economic issues, cultural issues, including numerous opportunities and challenges surrounding open innovation strategies; study relevant risks and risk management; analyze SMEs evolution pattern on adopting open innovation strategies through available measurable criteria; provide suggestions or recommendations along these contexts rehearsing possible operational scenarios; and assist practitioners to gain knowledge in designing action plans to empower SMEs in reaching out the grass roots communities utilizing open innovation strategies. Target Audience The target group dealing with SMEs development through open innovation strategies may accommodate the entire community of a country, ranging from government or policy initiators; entrepreneurs and enterprises; researchers, practitioners and academics; users and intermediaries. Hence, the potential audience of this book will consist of all these stakeholders of an economy. Furthermore, on regional and global scenarios, this book will target development partners, agencies and their mediators. Recommended topics for chapters include, but are not limited to, the following: - Cases on open innovation management, - Open innovation models and processes, - Technology supported cases on open innovation, - Co-creation of sustained platforms for SMEs, - Studying, analyzing or evaluating success cases, - Innovation in marketing and communication, - Application of strategies in entrepreneurial ventures and IPR - Operation, legal interpretation and legislation aspects - Socio-economic impact and implications of open innovation in SMEs, - Knowledge creation and collaboration among various actors, and - Cases illustrating risks and crisis management. Submission Procedure Researchers and practitioners are invited to submit on or before July 15, 2010, a 2-3 page proposal clearly explaining the mission and concerns of his or her proposed chapter. Authors of accepted proposals will be notified by July 30, 2010 about the status of their proposals and sent case guidelines. Full cases are expected to be submitted by September 30, 2010. All submitted cases will be reviewed on a double-blind review basis. Contributors may also be requested to serve as reviewers for this project. Publisher This book is scheduled to be published by IGI Global (formerly Idea Group Inc.), publisher of the Information Science Reference (formerly Idea Group Reference), Medical Information Science Reference, and IGI Publishing imprints. call for papers - special issue of new media & society
by Charles Ess 14 Jun '10

14 Jun '10

Dear all, with the usual apologies for eventual cross-postings, along with the request for forwarding the following to appropriate lists and potentially interested colleagues - and many thanks in advance, - c. Institut for Informations- og Medievidenskab Helsingforsgade 14 8200 Århus N. Denmark mail: <imvce(a)hum.au.dk> tel: (+45) 8942 9250 === Call for Papers for a Special Issue of New Media & Society: Internet Studies: The State of an Emerging Field¹ Editor: Charles Ess, Guest Professor (Professor med særlige opgaver), Department of Information and Media Studies, Aarhus University, Denmark, and Professor, Philosophy and Religion, Drury University. and William H. Dutton, Professor of Internet Studies, Oxford Internet Institute, University of Oxford Background In 2005, Nancy Baym edited a special issue of The Information Society (Vol. 21, No. 4) that asked the question, ³Is Internet Research¹ a Virtual Field, a Proto-Discipline, or Something Else?² In 2010, two handbooks of Internet Studies will appear (edited by Hunsinger, Kastrup, & Allen [Springer] and Consalvo & Ess [Wiley-Blackwell]) while a third has been launched (Dutton [Oxford University Press]. These publications document the emergence and development of Internet Studies as a field of research and scholarship in its own right, one affiliated with a characteristic topoi of issues, research questions, methodologies, and its own distinctive ethics. To further explore the broad terrains and structures of this emerging field, the Oxford Internet Institute is organizing a series of workshops and lectures over the next two years, intended to encourage and gather critical analyses and perspectives from a number of internationally-recognized scholars and researchers, along with younger colleagues whose research promises new insights and perspectives. The first of these workshops, held at Aarhus University on 19 March 2010, took stock of the field by critically assessing the two major volumes on Internet Studies (Consalvo and Ess 2010, and Hunsinger et al 2010), with a view towards developing further insights for the field, its current and future directions, and its (potential) significance and impact. Future workshops are being organized, including one that will be held in Barcelona in early 2011. Steve Jones (<http://www.oii.ox.ac.uk/events/?id=380>), and Matthew Allen (<http://www.oii.ox.ac.uk/events/?id=344>) have held lectures in this series at the Oxford Internet Institute, and Charles Ess (<http://www.oii.ox.ac.uk/events/?id=390> will present one of a number of future lectures. A special issue of New Media & Society is intended (a) to encourage and collect the development of scholarly contributions developed initially for these workshops, and lectures, and (b) gather related scholarly research and reflections from the global community of Internet scholars and researchers. These contributions will build on the existing and forthcoming handbooks and related compilations to stimulate and inform global discussion about the emerging field of Internet Studies. Accordingly, we invite contributions from across the range of disciplines applied to study of the Internet that address our thematic questions, beginning with: can ³Internet Studies² be discerned and demarcated as a field (or fields) of academic research and scholarship out of the rapidly growing body of research and scholarship intertwined with the Internet and the array of human interactions it facilitates? And: insofar as Internet Studies can be argued to exist as a field(s) what are its defining characteristics, including, e.g., a distinctive set of objects of study, research questions, methodologies, a body of findings and literature recognized as foundational or definitive, ethical guidelines, professional expectations, and whatever else we may argue to be necessary, if not sufficient, conditions for an academic field(s) of study? Contributions may take one of two forms. One, authors may seek to develop comprehensive and authoritative overviews of how an important topos of research on the Internet (e.g., social interactions, emotion, identity play and development, etc., etc.) has been studied, important findings, and areas in need of further research. Two, authors may take a critical perspective on the field as a whole or any sub-field within this area. Generally, the special issue will not focus on the presentation of specific research, even though it might connect well with and reflect upon a broader synthesis or overview of a larger domain of Internet research. Other special issues and articles are well suited for the publication of original research. This issue will be more focused on generating the most stimulating syntheses of the field defining the vitality and overall state of the field. Selected contributions will appear in the special issue of New Media & Society. Submissions are due to the editors by December 31, 2010. Submissions accepted by the editors will be returned to the author(s) for any needed revision by 31 March 2011; final versions will be due back to the editors by 30 June 2011, followed by an external review process resulting in final acceptance / rejection / or acceptance with revisions. Final versions of accepted papers will be due by 1 December 2011. Authors¹ Guidelines are available on the New Media & Society website at <http://newmediaandsociety.com/index.php>: accessing these will require signing up for a user id and password (also necessary for any eventual submission to the special issue.) Briefly: submissions require an abstract, keywords, and a target length of no more than 8,000 words, including notes and references. Documentation is Harvard style. For further information about our workshops, lectures and this special journal issue, please feel free to contact either of the editors: Charles Ess: charles.ess(a)gmail.com William Dutton: director(a)oii.ox.ac.uk
