Hi AoIR community, I'm seeking interview participants for a study about research productivity and time management hacks, tools, techniques, and technologies used by scholars in a higher education. Please see the full IRB-approved recruiting statement below, or let me know if you have any questions. I'll begin conducting interviews this month, but will continue collecting data for a while, so there is no rush to participate if you are currently slammed with mid-semester work. Best regards, Lexi ____________________________ This study explores issues of time management and research productivity for scholars in a variety of higher-education settings in the United States. In particular, I want to hear about how you make time for research, and any productivity or time management techniques, tools, apps, programs, “hacks,” or advice you’ve tried or continue to use. I’m looking for scholars based in the United States from all walks of academic life – from early career researchers to full professors, from small liberal arts colleges to large R1 institutions, from tenure-track faculty to visiting scholars and post-doctoral fellows. You may consider yourself a highly productive researcher or someone who struggles to make time for research. All experiences and “experience levels” are encouraged to participate. The only requirement is that you have completed your PhD and work at a higher education institution in the United States in the fields of Humanities or Social Sciences. If you agree to be interviewed, you’ll be asked to participate in a semi-structured conversation with me for roughly 60 minutes, to be conducted and recorded via Zoom. Your participation is entirely voluntary; there is no compensation for participating, and no penalty for choosing not to participate or to withdraw from the study. You can withdraw your participation at any time and for any reason.The anticipated risks to participants are minimal; however, some participants may feel frustrated or demoralized talking about the expectations of academic publishing and obstacles to research productivity. All data collected will remain confidential as required by the law and institutional policy. All the information and methods in this study have been approved by the West Virginia Wesleyan College Institutional Review Board. Names will not be attached to any data and recorded responses will be kept in a secure location. Following completion of this research and analysis of the data, all audio-visual recordings of the interviews will be deleted; only anonymized transcripts will be kept for research purposes. Invitation to Public Event - Digital After Dark: Let's Talk...About Sex and Dating

Hi all, This year, the UK’s ESRC Festival of Social Science has themed events focussing on ‘Our Digital Lives’, exploring the relationship between humans and technology. Several staff from the relatively new Digital Society Research Theme, in the Centre for Research on Inclusive Society here at the University of Salford are running events. The events reach out to different public audiences – children, families, professionals, cover a wide range of topics including health, money, sex and leisure and involve collaborations nationally and internationally. Digital After Dark: Let's Talk...About Sex and Dating Dr Lisa Garwood-Cross and I, the Co-Leads of the Digital Society Research Theme, are hosting an event on the 24 October - 6:00 PM – 8:00 PM. Drawing on our UK survey of online dating, we are hosting an interactive quiz night exploring how digital media, dating and hookup apps, are shaping (or not) some of our most intimate experiences. The survey, which also includes Dr Rachel Katz, includes a diverse demographic base, current and historical users and non-users. It considers alternate technologies deployed, contexts and experiences of use, including the arrangement of non-normative sexual practices, notions of convenience, appetite for premium features, sexual ethics and matters concerning health for example. Also joining us are Professor Susanna Paasonen (University of Turku, Finland) and Professor Kath Albury, (Swinburne University of Technology, Australia) who will also be sharing their thinking with the audience during what we hope will be an engaging and worthwhile event. Chat apps and Voter Manipulation

Hi All, I’m excited to share our new report “Covert Campaigns: Safeguarding Encrypted Messaging Platforms from Voter Manipulation <https://bhr.stern.nyu.edu/publication/safeguarding-encrypted-messaging-plat…> .” We draw on interview data from across seventeen counties and a survey of 4,500 messaging app users across nine countries to surface mechanisms of propaganda and electoral tampering on platforms from WhatsApp to Telegram. We then present a number of technical, educational, and policy-based solutions. Join our AoIR undergraduate teaching workshop on 30 October in Sheffield

There are still a limited number of places in our undergraduate teaching workshop at the AoIR conference this October/November. In the classroom (on campus or virtual), our students’ understandings of social media and internet use don’t always align with broader press or research narratives. Moreover, and in response to this year’s conference topic, as the mission of universities becomes ever more vocation-focused, our roles as educators often include preparing students for careers in ‘industry’. University marketing material highlights the career opportunities for which undergraduates will be prepared, and there is a push to include ‘industry experiences’ within degrees. This workshop brings educators together to discuss the difficulties and joys of teaching in, on, and around the internet. What do we learn from our students about the internet, how are we using the internet to teach, and what’s the best way of bringing AoIR research into our classrooms? This workshop will be held in-person in Sheffield, and registered participants are able to contribute their thoughts via a shared Google Doc. We will also allow a limited number of auditors to view the proceedings via Zoom, with one off-site organizer managing the auditors and enabling their participation as time allows. They will join a team of social scientists who use empirical and critical methods to study the social, political, and cultural dynamics that shape technologies and their consequences. Our work draws on and spans several disciplines, including anthropology, communication, gender and sexuality studies, history, information studies, law, media studies, organizational and management sciences, science & technology studies, and sociology. This is an ideal opportunity for a new Ph.D. to conduct original research that brings empirical and critical perspectives to bear on a variety of complex sociotechnical issues. Postdoctoral researchers are expected to devise their own research agendas.
