Dear colleagues, A call for your consideration, available also here: https://t.ly/MC3OY In parallel to this year’s ASCA Cities Seminar <https://www.cities.humanities.uva.nl/news/2024-2025-playable-cities/>, Carolyn Birdsall, Linda Kopitz and Alex Gekker are co-editing a *special issue on “Playable Cities”* for Mediapolis – A Journal of Cities and Culture <https://www.mediapolisjournal.com> to be published in September 2025. The city is a playground. But is it really? This dossier takes this recurring metaphor as a starting point to explore what ‘playability’ means in the context of the urban environment. From the use of simulation games in city planning (cf. Lammes 2008) to urban installations that invite playfulness, from alternative cityscapes in video games to activist interventions for more public spaces: Play can be understood both as a way to imagine the city – and a way to disrupt it. It is often positioned as an alternative to a more constraining and utilitarian form of “smart” urbanism, one that emphasizes contingency and freedom (De Lange 2015; Gordon and Walter 2016). If playing is a form of “understanding what surrounds us” (Sicart 2014, 1), thinking about the intersections between play and the city also points to larger questions of access, belonging and ownership of spaces. In this context, we are also interested in how urban play – both physically and virtually – can be a way to “resist the givenness of the place” (Boano and Talocci 2014, 112). Exploring how playable cities are represented, designed and built points us to the complex connections between imagination and practice in making cities more ‘livable’. Some of the questions we are interested in: # What makes a city ‘playable’? # How is play rendered (in)visible in the city? # What forms of play and playing are possible/desired/designed in the city? # How is ‘playability’ operationalized in public policy and urban planning? # In what ways are urban infrastructures made ‘playable’? # How are urban environments represented in virtual games? # How can activist interventions in public space draw on or be framed through play? # How can we approach play both as a concept and method? The call engages with media studies, games studies, geography and urbanism, alongside researchers and practitioners from other relevant disciplines. Building on recent work in those fields, for instance, a recent special issue on “Cities as Playgrounds/Playgrounds as Cities” (Davies, Hjorth and Lammes 2024), it explores the benefits and limits of playability as an urban metaphor. What is lost or gained when cities are compared to – or even built upon – games, toys, playgrounds, performance spaces and the like? We invite contributions from diverse fields, including, but not limited to, urban studies, film/television studies, game and gaming studies, sociology, geography, gender studies, political studies, philosophy, new media theory, disconnection studies, history, and so on. We are especially interested in contributions exploring ‘Playable Cities’ from a global and interdisciplinary perspective including artistic research and architectural practice. Please submit an abstract of your proposed article (300 words) and a short bio (100 words) to Linda Kopitz (l.kopitz(a)uva.nl) by 15 October 2024. Authors will be informed of the selection within two weeks after the deadline. Full articles (3000 words) will be due in May 2025 and will subsequently go through an anonymous peer review process. *** Third Call for Contributions *** 20th International Conference on Persuasive Technology (PERSUASIVE 2025) May 5-7, 2025, 5* St. Raphael Resort and Marina, Limassol, Cyprus https://2025.persuasivetech.org (*** Proceedings to be published by Springer in LNCS ***) In a world in which technology is increasingly present in people’s lives, and changing human behavior and attitudes is often the key to solving many societal and personal problems, studying how technology might be used to influence humans (in their behavior, attitudes and information processing), is paramount. Persuasive Technology is a vibrant interdisciplinary research field, focusing on the design, development and evaluation of interactive technologies aimed at influencing people’s attitudes and/or behaviors through persuasion, but not through coercion or deception. The research community aims at enriching people’s lives in various domains such as health and sustainability by supporting people in setting and achieving their own goals, thus helping them change their behavior. The 2025 conference will be hosted in Limassol, Cyprus at the 5* St. Raphael Resort and Marina. The previous successful conferences have been organized in Wollongong, Limassol, Eindhoven, Stanford, Oulu, Claremont, Copenhagen, Columbus, Linköping, Sydney, Padua, Chicago, Salzburg, Amsterdam, and Waterloo. The conference series seeks to bring together researchers and practitioners from industry and academia working with various topics of persuasive technology. We welcome the following categories of papers and extended abstracts: • Technical papers that introduce novel persuasive technology approaches and solutions alongside evidence of their potential. • Empirical studies which seek to provide evidence and explanation of methods, principles and theories in persuasive systems. • Conceptual-theoretical papers which primarily seek to contribute to the general understanding of the field’s core themes and specificities. • Other papers, e.g. literature reviews or experience reports. SUBMISSION TYPES Regular Papers This format is suitable for original research, which is completed work at the time of submission and, regardless of the length of the paper, is a self-sufficient scientific contribution. Papers can be full papers (12 pages, excluding references) or short papers (6 pages, excluding references) in Springer LNCS format, and describe work not presented, published or simultaneously submitted elsewhere. Accepted papers will be included in the Springer LNCS conference proceedings and be devoted a timeslot for oral presentation. Selected papers will be invited for submission to Behaviour & Information Technology journal (Taylor & Francis). Extended Abstracts We also welcome extended abstract submissions to showcase the results of already conducted studies where authors do not wish to publish them as regular papers in the conference proceedings but rather present them at the conference for discussions that can shape the final version (that may be submitted elsewhere later). The studies will be also be devoted a timeslot for oral presentation in a special session. Extended abstracts must not be more than 2 pages in CEUR format (including references). Accepted abstracts will be included in the adjunct conference proceedings (CEUR Workshop Proceedings, 1 column style, see here). Selected papers in this category, based on their quality, level of timeliness and relevance, and completion, will also be invited for submission to Behaviour & Information Technology journal. Poster Presentations This format is suitable for descriptions of smaller studies, project outlines, literature reviews or work-in-progress. Authors should submit a 2-page abstract in CEUR format (1 column style). Accepted posters will be included in the adjunct conference proceedings (CEUR Workshop Proceedings). Posters will be displayed and presented during a dedicated session of the conference. Demonstrations and Artefacts The Persuasive 2025 track on Demonstrations and Artefact is intended to foster discussion and exchange of ideas among researchers and practitioners from academia and industry by demonstrating or presenting hardware and software products or artefacts, including those in virtual settings (e.g., simulation systems, VR, and games), that range from early research prototypes to mature production-ready systems. The contribution should be the result of original, innovative work, including solving novel technical or research problems, and/or creating novel individual or industrial UI/UX. Accepted demonstrations or presentations shall be presented live during the conference. Doctoral Consortium Papers The Doctoral Consortium is a special session of the conference where PhD students can receive advice in a constructive atmosphere. Students present and discuss their research with other PhD students and a panel of established researchers in the area of persuasive technology. Students interested in participating in the Doctoral Consortium should submit a 4-page abstract in CEUR format (1 column style) describing their research question, its position with respect to the state of the art, their research plans and methodology, ideas, and results achieved so far. Accepted abstracts will be included in the adjunct conference proceedings (CEUR Workshop Proceedings) unless opted out by the student. Workshops and Tutorial Proposals Workshops are meant to gather a number of people to work interactively on an emerging topic and exchange ideas. Tutorials are intended to help people attending the conference organize a related scientific meeting on a specific topic or instruct on a specific practice. Approved workshops and tutorials will be announced on the conference website. Tutorials and workshops will take place during a half- or full-day session before the conference. We are very excited to announce that our keynote speaker for #AoIR2024: Industry <https://aoir.org/aoir2024/keynote-plenary/> is *Dr. Seeta Peña Gangadharan from the London School of Economics. * Dr. Gangadharan is an associate professor in media and communications at LSE. Her work focuses on inclusion, exclusion, and marginalization, as well as questions of democracy, social justice, and technological governance. She co-leads two projects: Our Data Bodies, which examines the impact of data collection and data-driven technologies on U.S. marginalized communities, and Justice, Equity, and Technology, which studies data-driven technologies and infrastructures in European civil society. Dr. Gangadharan’s talk is titled* Timeliness and technological refusal: Reflections on quantum-mania and industry’s power* >From tech worker walkouts and increased union drives, to coordinated withdrawals by advertisers from platforms, to protests against Big Tech and tech infrastructure, people and institutions everywhere are expressing their discontent with the business of technology. To some, these actions serve as evidence that technological refusal is a practicable form of politicizing technology and technology governance, even if it doesn’t conspicuously reimagine or transform the institutions under critique. To others, these events represent “too little, too late,” arguing that they occur at a time when path dependencies have congealed, and industrial policies and industry power are already sunk into the foundations of social, economic, and political life. These competing interpretations raise the question: when is technological refusal most timely? To answer this question, I explore timeliness through the lens of the quantum internet, a so-called “frontier” technology in its pre-commercial stage. I use insights from common sets of objections arising from social movements and other ad hoc efforts to ban, interrupt, or transform automated technologies to speculate: Who might push back on quantum internet? Why? How? And with what effect? In fact, timely refusal in the early stages of industrial development and innovation requires new, daunting kinds of engagement and forms of institutional support.
