Primarily a humanistic researcher, Rauchberg's Microsoft-funded scholarship investigates the entangled interplay between Western liberal humanism, governance, and cultural production in the creative economy, focusing on disability, race, and ideology. Her award-winning work appears in top media and communication studies journals. Rauchberg is currently working on a book manuscript about shitposting, platform hygiene, and aspirational labor. Brooke Erin Duffy is an Associate Professor in the Department of Communication at Cornell University, where she studies the role of social media platforms in reconfiguring work, employment, and society. Her books include (Not) Getting Paid To Do What You Love (Yale University Press, 2017/2022), Platforms and Cultural Production, with Thomas Poell and David Nieborg (Polity, 2022) and The Visibility Bind: Creators and the Perils of Platform Labor (University of Chicago Press, under contract). David Craig is an Associate Professor of Communication at USC Annenberg, where he conducts research and teaches courses on global and national media industries and creator culture through the lens of political economy, cultural, production, and creator studies. He has published three books and over two dozen articles about the global and Chinese creator industries, whether referred to as social media entertainment or wanghong. Michelle Beaver has been an integral part of the YouTube team since 2010, contributing her expertise in various roles spanning operations and content partnerships across both the United States and EMEA. Currently, she serves as a strategic partner manager within the North America Top Creator team, managing partnerships with YouTube's most successful content creators. Before her tenure at YouTube, Michelle cultivated her career in the music industry, with roles in artist management, touring, and radio. They develop, operate and sell key data infrastructures and devices that enable major social and political processes to take place (Plantin et al., 2018). Ownership of these infrastructures gives them “privileged access” (Srnicek, 2017, p. 44) to user activities and great wealth. These provide them in turn with significant power that directly impacts the political rights as well as conditions of people worldwide. Within their infrastructures, these industries often operate as if they own fiefdoms, enjoying broad powers to shape and restrict users’ behaviors, and designing systems that grant users feudal power over others (Schneider, 2023). In the past, the IT industries - including software, hardware, storage, and internet platforms - were reluctant to participate in political life and overtly exert power but rather turned to the construction of computational devices and networks as alternative spaces for individual fulfillment (Turner, 2006). However, in recent years, IT firms (Dror, 2015) and entrepreneurs (Creech & Maddox, 2022; Karppi & Nieborg, 2021) have been more explicit in their public commitments and interventions. They have used their access to data to promote particular political agendas and “choreograph publics” (Murray & Flyverbom, 2021, p. 630) consonant with both their narrow corporate interests and more general social visions. They provide political campaigns with technical assistance (Kreiss & McGregor, 2018) and regulate political speech (Kreiss & McGregor, 2019). They have influenced public policy domains such as education in ways that promote the adoption of the systems they develop and the values they espouse (Davidson et al., 2024; Sims, 2017; Tamir & Davidson, 2020). In some areas, such as national security, the state has relied on IT firms to carry out core political functions by proxy (Chachko, 2021; Feldstein, 2021). Prominent IT executives and entrepreneurs claim the authority and jurisdiction to participate in moral debates well beyond the confines of the industry (Daub, 2020), and network celebrities connected with these industries do so as well (Turner & Larson, 2015). Some industry personnel participate in political activism leveraging their occupational identity and social status as technology experts. In many of these cases, the industry’s power is not only mediated by the socio-technical systems it develops but is also applied using direct interventions (Eyal & Buchholz, 2010) which rely on human interaction and social discourse. In reaction to these interventions and the increased power of the industry more generally, governments (both national and supra-national) have acted to curb industry power or shape it for their own needs sometimes in a bid to deepen systems of political control (Feldstein, 2021; Hutson, 2023). In addition, governments often restrict foreign firms and maintain close ties with domestic ones (Huang & Tsai, 2022). Given the more proactive role the IT industries play in political life we wish to ask in this pre-conference: How do the IT industries intervene in political campaigns? How do these industries shape the public policy process through lobbying, donations and consulting, both in relation to media and internet policy and in relation to broader policy domains? How do their products algorithmically affect the political process? What role do industrial actors play in opposing, or supporting and sometimes leading activist movements? How do industrial actors intervene in intellectual debates? and how do governments respond to industry interventions and/or co-opt the IT industries for their own purposes? In posing these questions and related ones, we welcome theoretical and empirical contributions that draw on diverse methodological approaches (qualitative, quantitative, and computational) to interrogate these industries’ political role around the world nationally and trans-nationally in both democratic and authoritarian regimes. This influence has become particularly evident with the rise of platforms and artificial intelligence (AI). Big Tech conglomerates are restructuring the education sector by incorporating new generative AI (GenAI) infrastructures and applications into their own educational services, while simultaneously integrating them with third-party edtech vendors. They bring nuanced perspectives of critical questions that is reflected in the work and how this sheds light on the society. Some research areas within AI and autonomous systems, such as human-robot interaction, has traditionally a weaker tradition of unfolding criticality beyond ethical principles and guidelines (Ljungblad et al, 2018, Ljungblad et al., 2023). The biomedical heritage of ethical guidelines has been critiqued for decades by social science and humanities research communities as they are ill-suited and outdated when it comes to qualitative social research, as well as digitally saturated or data-implicated research contexts (Markham, 2023). There is a risk that engagement with research ethics frequently remains superficial, formulaic, and focused on procedures rather than the application of ethical thinking to the practical concerns of research and socio-technical development to achieve ethically responsible research and design (Hård af Segerstad, Kasperowski, Kullenberg & Howes, 2017). Thus, there is a growing urgency for adopting broader perspectives and delving into critical inquiries concerning the actual and prompted integration of AI and autonomous systems into everyday life. WASP-HS is an excellent research initiative where criticality and ethics relevant for technology such as AI and autonomous systems can build on traditions from the arts and humanities in unfolding criticality and ethical perspectives essential for high quality research that benefit a democratic society. This workshop aims to provide researchers and other interested stakeholders (such as industry experts and designers) with hands-on opportunities to delve into criticality and ethics, addressing methodological and epistemological concerns in their practices. We welcome participants from diverse disciplines, such as Human Computer Interaction (HCI), Human Robot Interaction (HRI), Science and Technology studies (STS), Software Engineering, Law, Design, Sociology, Anthropology, Education, Media Studies, Communication, Ethics, Philosophy of technology, Applied ethics and more for an exploration of their work related to the theme of the workshop. The workshop is a halfday event and will begin with opening remarks from Annette Markham (Chair Professor of Future Digital Literacy and Public Engagement, Utrecht University, the Netherlands) and Gordana Dodig Crnkovic (Professor of Computer Science, Mälardalen University & Professor of Interaction Design, Chalmers University of Technology, Sweden), who will lay the groundwork for the session. Technology, Internet, and Policy (TIP) Panels at the 2025 Political Studies Association's Annual Conference (Deadline on the 18th)

Dear AoIR friends, The Technology, Internet, and Policy PSA Specialist Group is inviting you all to submit proposals for the PSA Annual Conference. It will take place from 14 to 16 April 2025 in Birmingham (UK). You can see the PSA's call out here: https://www.psa.ac.uk/events/psa-annual-conference. We welcome proposals on all aspects related to the intersection of our core topics (tech, internet, digital politics), and can include, but not exclusive of, research relating to data, artificial intelligence, social media and their intricate relationships with society and policy. The deadline for submission is 18 October. How to submit: * Log into the PSA25 Ex-Ordo website (https://psa25.exordo.com/) with your account details and click on the dashboard link in the top bar. On the dashboard home page, you will see a card that says, 'SUBMIT ABSTRACT' and a button labelled 'Submit Your Abstract Now' which will take you to the My Submission Portal * In the My Submission portal, you will find an easy step-by-step process to follow and successfully submit your abstract * When submitting your abstract, please select the "Technology, Internet and Policy" Specialist Group's name in the 'Topics' section, which will identify us as the intended recipient and ensure your abstract is sent to us by the PSA team * When there is more than one author per paper, you should also ensure that the 'Lead Author' includes the details of the co-authors * That's it! Timeline: * 18th October: CfP closes * 15th November: paper givers notified if paper has been accepted * December: first draft programme released and early-bird registration opens * February: paper givers must have registered for conference Please do forward this invitation to anyone who you think might be interested in submitting to be in a TIP panel! Dear colleagues, We warmly invite you to submit a paper for the ISA panel “Digital Family Practices” at the ISA Forum of Sociology in Rabat, Morocco, 6-11 July, 2025. We use smart phones and computers for entertainment, shopping and work, as well as distant parenting. Wi-fi connection points represent large structural and institutional transformations, that also changes the way we do families and close relations. Although we still both marvel and feel uneasy over leaps in the development in digital possibilities, most digital tools have become inevitable and unassuming parts of our everyday lives. Digitalization changes the precondition to do family life and accelerate the questions of what consequences these changes have on families, in families and for society. This paper session welcomes empirical, theoretical or methodological studies on digitally fueled transformations of the family, that: · look at digital family practices, including among migrants, transnational families and refugees, on school and work platforms, in digital personal communication, relations of care, parenting, digital intimacy and play. · focus on how digital practices reproduce or challenge traditional family norms, gender norms and norms for parenting, and the display of such norms · address all digitally fueled transformations of the family, and how these transformations impact and challenge family both as a concept, a social practice and as an institution in different societies around the world · apply and develop the theoretical knowledge of family as a practice, addressing new forms of family sovereignty as well as vulnerabilities in and for the family due to digitalization in everyday lives. 2 PhD Scholarships Available: Polarisation and Partisanship in Australian and International Public Debates

Dear friends, I am now calling for expressions of interest to fill the last two PhD positions in my current Australian Laureate Fellowship project on the drivers and dynamics of partisanship and polarisation in online public debate, based in the Digital Media Research Centre at Queensland University of Technology. We are hoping for these PhD students to start in Semester 1/2025 (in late February 2025), so prospective PhD students should contact me as soon as possible. Here are the details: 2 PhD Scholarships: Polarisation and Partisanship in Australian and International Public Debates Start date: Semester 1/2025 (enrolment by 24 February 2025) Stipend: A$32,192 per annum for a maximum duration of 3.5 years / A$45,000 per annum for Indigenous candidates (tax-free) Institution: Digital Media Research Centre, Queensland University of Technology, Brisbane, Australia For further information, see https://www.qut.edu.au/study/fees-and-scholarships/scholarships/polarisatio… and contact Prof. Axel Bruns (a.bruns(a)qut.edu.au) Research Outline: We offer two scholarships on this topic, and specifically seek at least one Indigenous Australian candidate. Students from diverse and multilingual backgrounds are also especially encouraged to apply. Candidates may come from a range of backgrounds within the humanities and social sciences, and have an interest in working within media and communication studies, with a particular interest in populism, propaganda, and/or polarisation. At least one candidate should also have an interest in affect, emotion, identity, and fandom in public and political communication, and the way that these factors overlap and intersect with partisanship and populism. Candidates should have an interest in, and early experience with, working with qualitative, quantitative, and/or mixed-methods research approaches; our work provides options for drawing on big data from news media and social media sources as well as for deep analysis of small, targeted collections of content. In particular, this may also include multi-modal approaches which investigate the "video first" Internet and the way that this emphasis on audiovisual content affects the dynamics and drivers of partisanship and polarisation. Indigenous Australian candidates are welcome to address any relevant topic. Indigenous candidates may be interested in addressing topics like the recent Voice to Parliament referendum in Australia and/or similar processes elsewhere in the world; however, there is absolutely no requirement for Indigenous candidates to address only such topics. Successful Indigenous Australian candidates will be eligible for the Indigenous Postgraduate Research Award (IPRA), which supersedes the 'Polarisation and Partisanship in Australian and International Public Debates' scholarship stipend. These two PhD projects will contribute to the work of the Australian Laureate Fellowship project Drivers and Dynamics of Partisanship and Polarisation in Online Public Debate, a groundbreaking research project led by Prof. Axel Bruns and funded by the Australian Research Council for the period of 2022-27, and join a team of more than ten doctoral and postdoctoral researchers working on related issues. The successful candidates will be supervised by Professor Axel Bruns and other members of the Laureate team, and have the opportunity to engage in an innovative and highly active team of researchers using cutting-edge qualitative and quantitative methods ranging from in-depth manual content analysis through computational social science to AI-enhanced analysis of public communication data from news media and social media sources.
