LOC Twitter Archive, Deja all over again?
by Jay Hauben 15 Apr '10

15 Apr '10

Hi, Richard Forno's comment reminded me that when Google bought the Deja Usenet archive the same issues were raised. All the voluntary, often spontaneous 'my-2-cents' comments suddenly became a profile for each user even though by the Berne Convention these were copyright by the poster and required permission for commercial (ie Google) use. For anyone interested in this history, it is told at there URLs: 1. Granted, that would undermine the purpose of collecting the entire "Twitterspace" for the LOC's stated purposes, but how many non-geekish Twitterati will be upset/incensed/enraged that their stuff is now a matter of permanent public record at the world's largest library? (Obviously, the whole "you-were-warned-and-should-have-known-what-you-were-getting-into-and/or-doing" rationale can apply in many cases.) > > Yes, there's "social networking" as a general concept, and I'll endorse it completely. But I'll also suggest there's derivatives to that concept called "public" social networking (ie, anyone can read/post, the owner doesn't care) and "private" social networking (ie, the owner uses and restricts their activities on a given SNS within their private social circles.) Certainly, Twitter can facilitate online interaction --- but bravo to those savvy enough to make their Twitter streams private/friends-only at the time they set up their accounts. > > Would the LOC do the same thing witih IRC chat logs? IRC is pretty much Twitter-esque. Or is that too daunting a task because *anyone* can throw up and run an IRC server, but Twitter is a centralised repository and thus an easy thing to try and archive? > > Doffing privacy hat now. > > -rf >

Re: [Air-L] Library of Congress Acquires Entire (Public) Twitter Archive

To Nancy : I am currently working on Usenet culture and of course I was reminded as well of the Deja News / Google Groups archiving and indexing. Although you don't explicity say this, so I might be wrong, you seem to be opposing the "historical cultural significance" of the Twitter archiving to the Usenet archiving by Google. Why would the latter be devoid of any historical/cultural meaning ? I have read a lot of news articles and forum threads (like Slashdot and Kuro5hin) from around 2001, when Google bought Deja News and set out to complete the archiving process. Of course there was a lot of debate like you mention about the private / public information, and the fact that the info was indexed, thus searchable, thus commodifiable. Also a clear negative point was (still is of course) that the Web application platform for searching the archives doesn't differentiate explicitly the Usenet archives from the Google Groups themselves. And of course the adsense running in the peritext. But there was a consensus about the fact that Google's digging of Usenet's past was giving value to a previously overlooked cultural matter. Suddenly Usenet had substance, that you could find in a series of "first posts" making history (first spam, first mention of Microsoft, first message announcing the Linux project, first mention of aids, etc. a lot of which is listed in the Usenet Timeline cooked up by Google Groups) as well as in the flame wars and other conversational games pertaining to Usenet culture and having informed in some kind of way Internet culture as a whole. Someone was saying on Slashdot that, as a Usenet veteran, he had always been doing his own archiving, consisting mainly of technical discussions and faqs, because he thought the tech stuff was what was going to be important to keep ; but he realized now that when the tech dimension had evolved so much, to the point that all that info is almost useless now except for a old machines tutorials collector, the "cultural" dimension, that seemed to be vain and stupid at the time (flame wars and all) was the real substance of Usenet as part of Internet's history in the making. So would the negativity stem from the fact that the Usenet archiving was made by a for-profit company, when the LIbrary of Congress is not ? Actually it did say a lot about the choices Google made to build its fanhood (in its early age, largely made of Internet hobbyists, and thus prone to Internet nostalgism/culturalism). But that's another question, maybe. If it's just a question of past user info made public, I do not understand : doesn't the lIbrary of Congress makes public its archive (not a rhetorical question : I don't know how it works, as I am not American) ? Also the user info was always public on Usenet, yet not systematically searchable like in Google Groups, I agree. In both cases it would be questionable ethically to republish that info. But in both cases they are "an amazing repository of mundane moments", specific to the mundane of Internet culture and history I would add. Sorry again if I read too much into your message. In any case it was good to be reminded of the Usenet archiving, which seem very important to put the Twitter archiving in perspective. Affective Fabrics of Digital Cultures: early bird registration ends tomorrow (15 April)
by Adi Kuntsman 14 Apr '10

14 Apr '10

***Please note that early bird registration ends tomorrow (15 April 2010). Final registration deadline is 15 May 2010 *** Affective fabrics of digital cultures: feelings, technologies, politics. 3-4 June 2010, University Place, The University of Manchester For further information and to register, please visit the conference website http://www.socialsciences.manchester.ac.uk/ricc/events/digital_affect/index… Plenary speakers: Una Chung (Sarah Lawrence College); Patricia Clough (Queens College, CUNY); Anne-Marie Fortier (Lancaster University); Melissa Gregg (The University of Sydney); Athina Karatzogianni (The University of Hull) This two-day international conference brings into creative tension two fields that are receiving growing scholarly attention: cultural studies of affect, public feelings and the politics of emotion, on the one hand, and scholarship on digital culture, new media and information-communication technologies, on the other. The conference aims to create a space for intellectual dialogue between the two fields by examining the relations between technologies, and in particular, new digital technologies – the Internet, digital cinema and photography, mobile communication, CCTVs, computer games – and affective politics. Bringing together contributions from the fields of sociology, media and cultural studies, arts, politics and science and technology studies, the conference will engage with the following questions: How does affect work in on-line networks and digital assemblages? What are the affective regimes of on-line sociality? What kind of perceptions, sensations, affective movements and public feelings emerge in our highly mediated and digitalised environments? What is the cybertouch of war, violence, terror? What are the structures of feeling that operate in the digitalised everyday and computerised ordinary? How can we theorise psycho-political formations of nation, race, empire, population and generation in the age of digital reproduction, mediated visions and globalised communication technologies? How do digital cultures shape our political horizons of fear, anxiety, mourning, hate, hope? Registration Early Bird Registration Fee before 15th April: Waged: £60/ Unwaged: £35 Full Conference Registration Fee after 15th April: Waged: £80/ Unwaged: £45 Registration fee covers refreshments, lunch and wine reception.
