New book: WEB HISTORY
by Brügger Niels 13 Apr '10

13 Apr '10

***Apologies for cross-postings*** New book: WEB HISTORY Edited by Niels Brügger, Peter Lang Publishing, New York 2010 Book synopsis ”This is the first edited volume to put the emerging field of web history on the agenda of internet research. Sixteen original chapters investigate how the use of the web has developed in the realm of web culture at large, as well as how the organization of web industries and old media institutions on the web have changed. A number of fundamental theoretical and methodological questions related to doing web history are also examined. The collection aims to explore some of the possible ways of approaching the web of the past, based on the assumption that the past is not only important for historical purposes, but because it must be taken into consideration in order to fully understand the web of the present and the web of the future. The book includes a foreword by Charles Ess and contributions from Kirsten Foot, Steven Schneider, Alexander Halavais, Ken Hillis, and more.” Read more on the publishers website: http://www.peterlang.com/index.cfm?vID=310468&vLang=E&vHR=1&vUR=2&vUUR=1 Best, Niels Brügger ------------------------------------------------------------ LATEST PUBLICATIONS AND PAPERS January 2010 Website Analysis, Papers from The Centre for Internet Research, 12, The Centre for Internet Research, Aarhus 2010, [ get an electronic copy at: http://cfi.au.dk/en/publications/paper/#a12 ] November 2009 Dræber dr.dk dagbladene?, www.kommunikationsforum.dk, 25. november, København 2009, 4 pages [ in Danish ] [ http://www.kommunikationsforum.dk/artikler/draeber-dr-dot-dk-dagbladene ] March 2009 Website history and the website as an object of study, New Media & Society, 11/1-2, Sage, London 2009, 115-132 [ get an electronic copy at: http://nms.sagepub.com/cgi/content/abstract/11/1-2/115?etoc ] INTERESTED IN WEB HISTORY? Invitation to participate in the second PEP-NET online discourse
by Noella Edelmann 13 Apr '10

13 Apr '10

*eParticipation in Central and Eastern Europe*: Invitation to participate in the second PEP-NET online discourse Dear All, if you are interested, an expert or a practitioner in the field of civic engagement, the Pan European eParticipation Network would like to invite you to participate in an online discourse about electronic Participation in Central and Eastern Europe. The discourse starts today and you can go to www.internet-discourse.eu <http://www.internet-discourse.eu/> to take part (or go directly to http://www.internet-discourse.eu/demos.php?&page=new_author to register). eParticipation and civic engagement practitioners from Central, Eastern and Western Europe will discuss a wide range of issues: from opportunities and challenges, to the structural, political and cultural problems that may stand in the way of successful eParticipation in the region. The focus of the discourse will be the development of strategies to enhance eParticipation in Central and Eastern Europe and overcome the obstacles identified. The final outcome of the discourse will be a paper, describing the situation of eParticipation in the region and making recommendations for improvement, which will be presented to the European Commission and other influencers of eParticipation. The discourse is broken down into three phases: *broadening*, *deepening* and *consolidating*. In the broadening phase, ideas and possible topics for discussion are fielded. Some of these are then selected for a more in-depth discussion in the *deepening* phase. This means that you can decide what is discussed before you discuss it. The final phase, *consolidating*, aims to summarize the results of the discussionand to highlight both areas where consensus has been achieved as well as those where different view points remained, resulting in a situation paper. The whole discussion is moderated by a dedicated team, so you can engage in a constructive and structured discussion. This is the second of three PEP-NET discourses. The first discourse was successfully held in early 2009 as a support action for the European eParticipation Study. We look forward to reading your contributions on internet-discourse.eu <http://www.internet-discourse.eu/> ! We kindly request you to forward this message to any person who might be interested in getting involved in this online discourse. *Want to become a PEP-NET member?* Find out how at http://pep-net.eu/becoming-a-member All the best Noella Noella Edelmann BA, MSc, MAS Researcher EDem10 Conference www.donau-uni.ac.at/edem eJournal of eDemocracy and Open Government www.jedem.org Digital Government Blog http://digitalgovernment.wordpress.com/ Centre for E-Government Danube University Krems Dr.-Karl-Dorrek-Strasse 30 3500 Krems Austria Tel.: ++43 2732 893 2303 www.donau-uni.ac.at/egov noella.edelmann(a)donau-uni.ac.at

We might want to watch a movie to be entertained or the news to stay informed on current events. Watching an episode of a favourite TV-series might help us decompress after a long day of hard work. Interacting with the content adds to that experience. For example, playing online games in relation to a television documentary might enhance learning in a fun way, checking out the video clip a friend recommended via the mobile phone is a shared experience adding to the feeling of relatedness, and creating mashups and uploading them online is a cool and challenging way to present one’s competence and creativity. EuroITV 2010 Grand Challenge Competition wants to premiere creators, developers and designers of interactive video content, applications and services that enhance the television and video viewing experience for consumers worldwide. Does your product, content, or service add to the positive experience the television audience is looking for? Are you about to rock the world of interactive video consumption and storytelling? Tell us all about it! The entries of the competition are expected to take a stand on the following questions, for example: - How might new technologies improve the enjoyment of watching television in the eyes of the audience? - What are the opportunities for innovative, creative storytelling offered by the multitude of platforms available today? An international jury of interactive media experts will honour and award the best entry with a total prize sum of 3.000 € as well as additional prices for excellence in enhancing the viewing experience. The EuroITV 2010 Competition Grand Challenge award may be given to one entry, divided between several entries or not awarded at all, if the award criteria set by the jury are not fulfilled. Jury Board: o Susanne Sperring, MediaCity, FINLAND o Robert Strezbowski, Beuth Hochschlue fuer Technik Berlin, GERMANY o Milena Szafir, Manifesto21.TV BRAZIL Jury Members: Simon Staffans, MediaCity, Åbo Akademi University, FINLAND William Cooper, Chief Executive of the news letter informitv.com, UK Nicky Smyth, BBC Future Media & Technology, UK Sebastian Moeritz, President of the MPEG Industry Forum, USA/UK Simon Staffans, who’s a TV format designer, MPEG Industry Forum, FINLAND Stefan Englet, Segment Manager for Consumer Electronics, Intel, GERMANY Carlos Zibel Costa, Professor, University of Sao Paolo, BRAZIL Esther Imperio Hamburger, Course Coordinator, BRAZIL All interactive video content, applications and services, which have been finalized or reached the stages of working demo or pilot, during the year of 2009 and 2010, are eligible to take part in the competition. Call for Papers: Next Generation edition of Fast Capitalism
by jeremy hunsinger 12 Apr '10

12 Apr '10

Special Issue - Call for Papers: Next Generation edition of Fast Capitalism Fast Capitalism is a journal devoted to analyzing the impact of information and communication technologies on self, society and culture in the 21st century. It bridges the social sciences and the humanities and welcomes both disciplinary and interdisciplinary work. Because there is such an interesting body of work being pursued by graduate students and post-docs in the College of Liberal Arts and strong scholars doing strong work that pushes the academy forward, this issue seeks to highlight some of this work and offer a unique opportunity to focus on the newest members of the academy. This special issue seeks to engage critically with the intersections of self, society, and culture, particularly in terms of the speed, connectivity, and density of 21st century life. Fast capitalism challenges notions of the modern and postmodern where traditional social institutions like work and family, education and entertainment, have blurred and fused in an accelerated, post-Fordist stage of capitalism. With new, faster, and greater numbers of mobile technology emerging every day, boundaries between the many segments of our lives seemingly disappear or break down entirely. But these invasive technologies that tether us to capital and control can also work to resist these tendencies. Through our mobile and active connections we create a public sphere where individuals and groups can express and enlighten, collaborate and organize; parents can manage their families and nurture children from the job site and on the road, challenging notions of public and private, and redefining traditional gender roles; knowledge once privileged within the confines of higher education has never been more free, more plentiful, or more available; information technologies afford connection, mitigate isolation, and even make way for social movements. We invite contributions on these and related issues. Suggested topics include: • 21st century daily life, the home, family, and/or children • Internet and/or social media and politics, politicians, campaigns, or government • The culture industry, play, and/or leisure in the information age • 21st century capital, labor, work, law, etc. • Cities, built environments and nature, theories of space and ecocriticism in an increasingly mobile and connected world • Issues of gender, race, and/or social class in a mobile and accelerated world • The changing face of education, the academy, and/or the public intellectual • Critical pedagogy and the promise of democratic education in the information age • Marxist explorations of social media • Identity politics and issues of hybridity in social/mobile media contexts • Globalization and the spread of technology • Media studies, cultural studies and philosophy of fast capitalism issues • Re-readings and reviews of social theory and its contributors • Theoretical approaches to any of the above • Pragmatic applications of any of the above • Visual or interactive explorations of any of the above Articles between 1,500 - 8,000 words are welcome, as are alternative format submissions such as commentaries, reviews, audio, visual and digital contributions. Outlines and works in progress are also welcome. Please include a short bio. Send submissions for the special issue in .doc or .pdf format to ljacobs(a)uta.edu with the subject “Next Generation Submission.” For Fast Capitalism’s editorial policy and style guidelines please got to http://fastcapitalism.com/. Fwd: HT2010 workshop--using links with meaning
by jeremy hunsinger 12 Apr '10

12 Apr '10

> > Hi, could you pass this on to anyone who might be interested? Thanks! > > WHAT: HT2010 Workshop 2. Rhetorical and Semantic Possibilities of Links: Cultural and Literary Applications of Links > > WHEN: Sunday June 13 > > WHERE: Toronto Canada (as part of the 4 day HT2010 conference <http://www.ht2010.org/index.html>) > > WHO: Anyone who wants to understand how a link can express meaning and how we use links to communicate (for example, elit writers and readers, social media developers, web developers, and ...you...) > > HOW: Submit a position paper by Friday April 30 to deenalarsen(a)yahoo.com. This paper should address your background, experience in hypertext and hypermedia, and questions that you wish to address have concerning how links work in communication. Notifications will be by Monday May 3 and the last day for early bird registrations is Wednesday May 5. > > > DESCRIPTION: > Mark Bernstein has written that the link is “the most important new punctuation mark since the comma.” More than that, the link actually conveys meaning. But how do people use links to communicate ideas? This workshop is designed to uncover the semantic value of the link and its potential rhetorical effects. We want to know what has been the cultural, literary, rhetorical, and semantic impact of the link to date, and what future effects can we anticipate and bring about. We will explore the link in hands-on exercises and examinations of electronic literature and other hypermedia examples. Ideally, the audience will be broad, composed of anyone who wants to develop a further understanding of this tool. > > We seek to network amongst ourselves and to continue the dialogue between the creative members of the hypertext community and those who make the software that enables expression. Exploring how links work will help create new foundations for Hypermedia and Web 2.0 environments (social linking, mapping, visualizing, network linking, etc), studies on adaptive hypermedia (adaptive navigation such as link hiding, linking used in recommendation strategies, and linking methods for personalized libraries and e-learning), highlight our understanding of links as a new component of writing and communication, and increase our understanding of the ways that they are used in education, research, journalism, and literature. > > > For more information, please email deenalarsen(a)yahoo.com > > > Deena Larsen > http://www.deenalarsen.net > > > > > > Jeremy Hunsinger Center for Digital Discourse and Culture Virginia Tech Information Ethics Fellow, Center for Information Policy Research, School of Information Studies, University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee http://www.tmttlt.com Whoever ceases to be a student has never been a student. -George Iles
