Reminder: CALL FOR CHAPTER PROPOSALS: Virtual Community Participation and Motivation: Cross-Disciplinary Theories
by Honglei Li 12 Apr '10

12 Apr '10

CALL FOR CHAPTER PROPOSALS Extended Proposal Submission Deadline: April 13, 2010 Virtual Community Participation and Motivation: Cross-Disciplinary Theories A book edited by Dr. Honglei Li Swansea University, United Kingdom To be published by IGI Global: http://www.igi-global.com/requests/details.asp?ID=762 Introduction This book intends to give a comprehensive view on virtual community participation. With the power to gather people with similar interests together, virtual communities have gained attention by not only practitioners, but researchers, as well. Various studies have been done to explore why people participate in virtual communities since it is only after aggregating a certain amount of members that a virtual community can be viable. Virtual community participation refers to those behaviours in which members mainly participate. Basically, past researchers have found two types of behaviours: lurking and active participation. Although many studies discussed the motivations to participate in virtual communities, including gift economy, pursuit of power, sense of belonging, sense of inclusion, relationship building, and so forth, none of them have given a clear and comprehensive framework on the reasons for virtual community participation. As the field is now in a position to call for a synthesis publication to integrate all aspects of virtual community participation theories, it’s important to edit a book to give both researchers and general virtual community practitioner the theoretical guidelines. This book will bring together the issues that managers, practitioners, and researchers must consider when planning, implementing, and managing members in virtual communities. Objective of the Book The book gives in-depth coverage of state-of-the-art research on virtual community participation. It first covers the concept of virtual community participation, followed by several streams of virtual community participation theories. It will be written for professionals, researchers, practitioners, and designers who want to improve their understanding of the strategic role of virtual community participation within the development of digital communication. Target Audience This book appeals to those interested not only in virtual communities, but also in virtual worlds, virtual teams, and even online shopping. Virtual community researchers, as well as researchers from diverse fields--computer science, information systems, psychology, sociology, and telecommunications--will find valuable motivation theories discussed in this book. But this book appeals to more than just researchers. Practitioners and managers looking to organize virtual communities efficiently and effectively will also benefit from the case discussions, empirical studies, and data analysis. In addition, upper-level and graduate-level students will find this research useful in their course work and research. Finally, this book will be a welcome addition to academic libraries' research collections. Recommended topics include, but are not limited to, the following: --Virtual community participation behavior definition --Discussion of various virtual community behaviors --The interpersonal relationship reason of virtual community participation --The social capital perspective of virtual community participation --The attachment of virtual community participation --The belonging or inclusion perspective of participation -- Gift economy perspective of virtual community participation --Frameworks to explain virtual community participation --Behavior theories --Social psychological perspective of virtual community participation --The power side of virtual community participation --Knowledge management motivation to participation --The communicational perspective to participate --The psychological perspective to participate --The process virtualization perspective to participate Submission Procedure Researchers and practitioners are invited to submit on or before April 13, 2010, a 2-3 page chapter proposal clearly explaining the mission and concerns of his or her proposed chapter. Authors of accepted proposals will be notified by May 28, 2010 about the status of their proposals and sent chapter guidelines. Full chapters are expected to be submitted by July 13, 2010. All submitted chapters will be reviewed on a double-blind review basis. Contributors may also be requested to serve as reviewers for this project. Additional information about this can be found at: http://www.igi-global.com/requests/details.asp?ID=762. Looking for readings on mobile computing and/or touch-screen interfaces
by Jason Mittell 12 Apr '10

12 Apr '10

Hi all, When teaching my digital media course, I try to leave the last couple weeks as topically TBA to account for new developments and topical issues. It seems like iPad-mania would be an appropriate topic to address. So I'm looking for any suggestions for good readings appropriate for advanced undergrads that tackle (in a humanistic/qualitative way appropriate to media studies) the topics of mobile computing and/or touch-screen interfaces that we might apply to the iPad. And if anyone has seen (or written) a compelling blog post or journalistic article about the iPad that could help frame discussion, that would be great too. Thanks in advance, -Jason --- Jason Mittell, Associate Professor of American Studies and Film & Media Culture Chair of Film & Media Culture Department Middlebury College 208 Axinn Center at Starr Library Middlebury, Vermont 05753 (802) 443-3435 / fax: (802) 443-2805 Blog: http://go.middlebury.edu/justtv

How do you collect information about the total number of blogs in a given region?
by Fouad Bajwa 12 Apr '10

12 Apr '10

Dear Community Members, I would like to learn the various methods and tools used to determine the total number of blogs in a given region? Has anyone attempted such an endeavour and what were there findings? I would like to explore this for my country to identify the number of blogs in Pakistan, categorize them within active and non-active (within a given criteria of number of posts) etc. Kindly point me to available work, methodology, tools if any, how such data mining would actually be carried out etc. Appreciating your support in advance. -- Regards. -------------------------- Fouad Bajwa Internet Governance Advisor ICT4D Social Practitioner & Researcher Member Multistakeholder Advisory Group (IGF) Member Civil Society Internet Governance Caucus (IGC) My Blog: Internet's Governance: http://internetsgovernance.blogspot.com/ Follow my Tweets: http://twitter.com/fouadbajwa MAG Interview: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ATVDW1tDZzA

BODY { font-family:Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;font-size:12px; } Dear AoIR, I'm not sure why AoIR adds this line -" BODY { font-family:Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;font-size:12px;} "- to my emails, and turns my links into bibliographic citations. AoIR is the only list that does this to my emails from this account, as far as I know. Does anyone have a suggestion how to change this? Thanks very much. Apologies for cross-postings. Please send it to interested colleagues and students. Thanks! CALL FOR WORKSHOPS AND TUTORIALS The 5th International Conference for Internet Technology and Secured Transactions (ICITST-2010) Technical Co-Sponsored by IEEE UK/RI Communications Chapter, November 8–11, 2010, London, UK (www.icitst.org) The ICITST has been a prime international forum for both researchers and industry practitioners to exchange the latest fundamental advances in the state of the art and practice, Internet Technologies, Secured Transactions, Application of Agents, Human-Computer Interface and Interaction for Ubi-com, Cybernetics, Data Mining, E-Society, Web Sevices, Semantic Web and Ontology, Mobile, Ad Hoc and Sensor Network Security, Digital Information Management and identify emerging research topics. The ICITST-2010 encourages you to submit workshop or tutorial proposals. The workshop or tutorial duration can be one day or half a day. All the accepted papers will be included in the conference proceedings. You can consider organising a workshop that is related to ICITST-2010 topics. The workshops and tutorials provide researchers the opportunity for presenting novel ideas in a less formal and possibly more focused way than the conferences themselves. It offers a good opportunity for young researchers to present their work and to obtain feedback from an interested community. The format of each workshop or tutorial is to be determined by the organisers, but it is expected that they contain ample time for general discussion. The preference is for one day workshops, but other schedules will also be considered. Important Dates: Workshop or Tutorial Proposal Submission: April 30, 2010 Notification of Workshop or Tutorial Acceptance: March 15, 2010 The proposal must include: 1. The name of the workshop or Tutorial. 2. A statement of goals for the workshop. 3. The names and addresses of the organisers. 4. The names of potential participants, such as program committee members. 5. A description of the plans for call for participation (e.g., call for papers). 6. The expected number of attendees and the planned length of the workshop. 7. The topic of the workshop should be relevant to the main conference and details of any previous workshops. 8. The URL of the workshop web site. If you are interested in organising workshop or tutorial for the ICITST-2010, please email your proposal to workshop-tutorial(a)icitst.org Your proposal will be reviewed by the Steering Committee. Twitter Export App for Mac?
by Theodore Plothe 11 Apr '10

11 Apr '10

Tweesearchers (can I claim that?), Thanks for the suggestions thus far! Unfortunately, success has been limited. I am looking at the Twitter feeds of every player in the NFL from a two period in Dec. 2009 (again, I'm way behind). Twitter only keeps 10000 tweets from a single account, the date is irrelevant as I've discovered, but the amount of data saved is the key. Thus an account started in Jan. 2010 by a Twitter user with 12892 tweets will have already had data deleted. Accounts began in Mar. 2009 with only 2167 tweets, will still have all that info accounted for. I only discovered this by manually clicking "more" at the bottom of the page. After 27 clicks, you can sense the frustration building. Searchtastic does not allow one to search an individual feed. For hash tags, mentions, and retweets, it's great. Unfortunately, I'm not looking at that. I have begun using TwapperKeeper, but have found it unproductive at times, especially considering it ranks @person as the least of its search parameters. Thus the search collection takes an hour or more to do. I place a name in at 1 pm, guaranteed it's not ready for me to export by 2 pm. I created a person notebook for ShaunPhillips95, and 25 min later, still not filled. I have been unable to export the data in a reliable manner, nor have I have been able to reliably set date ranges to find the data I desire. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. Again, any help will be appreciated. Theo Plothe Graduate Student Northern Illinois University Until next time, Theo

Twitter Export App for Mac?

Theo, Several of us at Old Dominion focus on social media in one way or another, and one of the best resources we use at ODU is TwapperKeeper < www.twapperkeeper.com>. It's a web-based system that will archive tweets. There are limits to how far it can reach backward, so I'm not sure if it will help you much with collecting previous data. But, for active tweet streams, it's fantastic. It does provide the time-stamp information you're looking for. You can download the data into an Excel file, as well. I hope that helps.
