Colleagues/ K-12 Leading The Mobile Way ? /Gerry Technology Counts is Education Week's annual report on educational technology. Powering Up Change But lack of research on the educational impact of portable tech tools is a problem. Editor's Note Much like the shifting landscape in K-12 educational technology, this year's Technology Counts is changing to address the challenges of covering schools in the digital age. Profiles: Laptops Building on a Decade of 1-to-1 Lessons Sustaining a laptop program at a middle school in Michigan requires a wireless vision and parent purchasing power. EXPERT ADVICE: Wireless Issues Profiles: IPods Portable Playlists for Class Lessons Although still banned by many schools, a growing number of others are using iPods and other MP3 players as educational accessories. Profiles: TeacherMates Targeting Elementary Readers TeacherMate—a Game Boy-like device—is now being used by 40,000 students in 15 states with the aim to improve the reading skills of K-2 students. VIDEO: TeacherMates in Action Profiles: Smartphones Solving Algebra on Smartphones A project to use the devices as teaching and learning tools is showing promising results. Features Adding Up Mobile Costs Paying for initiatives that use portable tech tools goes far beyond the initial cost of the devices. Teachers Testing Mobile Methods Best practices are emerging as more educators use the devices in their classrooms. Configuring Content Developing meaningful lessons that fit the constraints of small-screen devices is a challenge. Full Speed Ahead in Higher Ed. Mobile learning is gaining momentum at colleges and universities faster than in K-12. Devices Deliver Learning in Africa Educators are finding innovative ways to bring education to students in remote areas. Tracking Trends Mobilizing the Research A growing number of studies in the U.S. and abroad is helping to build a better case for using portable digital tools. Ed-Tech-Stats This year, the Technology Counts data section shifts its focus from a state to a district lens, offering a host of charts showing how local schools and districts are using standard and emerging technologies to improve education. Draft Survey to Prioritize Online Local Participation Investments - Input by Monday Please
by Steven Clift 17 Mar '10

17 Mar '10

This is not a scientific or representative survey. OK, now that that is on table, we would really appreciate your input on how to improve this survey: http://pages.e-democracy.org/Participation_online_survey My goal is to get a sense from those who are going to do the heavy lifting of building, approving, funding, or initially participating in the next generation of local online civic engagement what is of _greatest priority_. What do they feel should be universal with e-participation/e-democracy to be viewed as a fully functioning and respectable local democracy? In a world of scarce resources, if your have $10,000 dollars or $1,000,000 to invest in strengthening democracy and you want to spend that online (or a portion) what will generate the best comparative results? Whether it is Tambouris et al Framework for Assessing eParticipation Projects and Tools or checking off the "factors and benefits" in the European eParticipation Summary Report, the grocery shopping list is far longer than can fit in the cart for any one local community. The result in my opinion (in my 15+ years in the field and visits to 25+ countries speaking to governments on the use of the Internet for civic engagement) is complete analysis paralysis and inaction at the local level in most local communities (particularly with governments, but also the civc sector). So, to kick off our Ford Foundation-funded Participation 3.0 - http://e-democracy.org/p3 - convening and outreach effort, we've decided to start off with an initial prioritization and idea submission online survey. My goal is to hear from a number of constituencies from "wired elected officials" and neighborhood online participants to researchers and technologists to see what next generation online civic engagement (transparency, participation, collaboration/problem-solving, inclusion, community building) ideas are of most interest among those who show up and want to make the future happen sooner than later across all local communities. The steps in our Next Generation Ideas process through 2010 are: 1. Participation 3.0 launch and outreach with online survey 2. Introduction/input webinar(s), includes some special calls for "wired local offcials" for example 3. Online working groups/input discussions 4. Top Ten theme drafting with outreach/partner building, broad outreach and input period 5. Open proposal/specifications - Partnership building, seek major funding 6. Launch funded projects, pilots, etc., Promote efforts that "move the field" The survey while short in questions is quite in-depth and might spin a few heads. I'd rather get 100 thoughtful responses than 1000 quick responses at this point. But I need your specific input on how to make this the best experience for those taking their time to contribute. So will this detailed draft generate some useful input? http://pages.e-democracy.org/Participation_online_survey (Click the link for the full draft.) Q2 Your Perspective Q3 Open Question Q4 Sharpening Priorities Q5 Open Data Q6 Open Government Directive Themes and Local Government Q7 Get Connected Options Please send along any input on the survey - as well as offers to help promote through various channels - in the next few days. We hope to go live next week with the survey. Early Planning Underway for JITP 2011 - "The Future of Computational Social Science" - PC Member and Keynote Nominations Being Accepted
by Stuart Shulman 17 Mar '10

17 Mar '10

JITP 2011 Conference Co-Chair John Wilkerson (University of Washington, Department of Political Science) and I are pleased to announce that early planning is underway for JITP 2011, tentatively titled: "JITP 2011: The Future of Computational Social Science," to be held on the campus of the University of Washington in May 2011. Building on recent workshops, we want to unite and foster social and computational scientists in functional collaborations that enrich the work of scholars in both fields. This is not easy, but we are making progress one algorithm and special issue at a time. This has been one part of the core mission of JITP since its founding. We still face substantial hurdles getting the reward structures of academe to validate these efforts. The conference theme is forward-looking and we hope it contributes to more dialog about the role of new, integrative digital methods in older, more established disciplines. If you would like to nominate anyone (including yourself) to join the JITP 2010 Program Committee, please send an email to JITP Managing Editor Michelle Sagan Gonçalves <mgoncalves(a)pubpol.umass.edu><mgoncalves(a)pubpol.umass.edu>indicating your interest. We are also accepting nominations for keynote speakers. thanks! ~Stu -- Dr. Stuart W. Culture Machine 12, CFP - The Digital Humanities: Beyond Computing
by Gary Hall 17 Mar '10

17 Mar '10

Apologies for cross-posting *** CALL FOR PAPERS THE DIGITAL HUMANITIES: BEYOND COMPUTING Special issue of Culture Machine, vol. 12; http://www.culturemachine.net edited by Federica Frabetti (Oxford Brookes University) The emerging field of the Digital Humanities can broadly be understood as embracing all those scholarly activities in the humanities that involve writing about digital media and technology as well as being engaged in processes of digital media production and practice (e.g. developing new media theory, creating interactive electronic literature, building online databases and wikis). Perhaps most notably, in what some are describing as a ‘computational turn’, it has seen techniques and methodologies drawn from Computer Science – image processing, data visualisation, network analysis – being used increasingly to produce new ways of understanding and approaching humanities texts. Yet just as interesting as what Computer Science has to offer the humanities, surely, is the question of what the humanities have to offer Computer Science; and, beyond that, what the humanities themselves can bring to the understanding of the digital. Do the humanities really need to draw so heavily on Computer Science to develop their sense of what the Digital Humanities might be? Already in 1990 Mark Poster was arguing that ‘the relation to the computer remains one of misrecognition’ in the field of Computer Science, with the computer occupying ‘the position of the imaginary’ and being ‘inscribed with transcendent status’. If so, this has significant implications for any so-called ‘computational turn’ in the humanities. For on this basis Computer Science does not seem all that well-equipped to understand even itself and its own founding object, concepts and concerns, let alone help with those of the humanities. In this special issue of Culture Machine we are therefore interested in investigating something that may initially appear to be a paradox: to what extent is it possible to envisage Digital Humanities that go beyond the disciplinary objects, affiliations, assumptions and methodological practices of computing and Computer Science? At the same time the humanities are not without blindspots and elements of misrecognition of their own. Take the idea of the human. For all the radical interrogation of this concept over the last 100 years or so, not least in relation to technology, doesn’t the mode of research production in the humanities remain very much tied to that of the individualized, human author? (Isn’t this evident in different ways even in the work of such technology-conscious anti-humanist thinkers as Deleuze, Guattari, Kittler, Latour, Negri, Ranciere and Stiegler?) So what are the implications and possibilities of ‘the digital beyond computing’ for the humanities and for some of the humanities’ own central or founding concepts, too? The human, and with it the human-ities; but also the subject, the author, the scholar, writing, the text, the book, the discipline, the university... What would THAT kind of (reconfigured) Digital Humanities look like? We welcome papers that address the above questions and that suggest a new, somewhat different take on the relationship between the humanities and the digital. Deadline for submissions: 1 October 2010 Please submit your contributions by email to Federica Frabetti: <kikka66it(a)yahoo.it> All contributions will be peer-reviewed. **************************************************** Established in 1999, CULTURE MACHINE http://www.culturemachine.net is a fully refereed, open-access journal of cultural studies and cultural theory. by Stuart Shulman 17 Mar '10

17 Mar '10

JITP 2010: Politics of Open Source May 6 & 7, 2010 University of Massachusetts Amherst http://politicsofopensource.jitp.net/ The Politics of Open Source is an interdisciplinary conference organized by the Journal of Information Technology and Politics (JITP) that examines the politics associated with the Free/Libre and Open Source Software (FLOSS) Movement. Early registration is open until March 20. The conference features two keynote lectures: Eric von Hippel, Professor and Head of the Innovation and Entrepreneurship Group at the Sloan School of Management at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Fellow at the Berkman Center for Internet and Society at Harvard Law School. Dr. von Hippel specializes in research related to the nature and economics of distributed and open innovation. He also develops and teaches about practical methods that firms can use to improve their product and service development processes. He is the author of Democratizing Innovation (MIT Press, 2005) and The Sources of Innovation (Oxford, 1988). Clay Johnson, Director of Sunlight Labs. Prior joining Sunlight, Clay was one of the four founders of Blue State Digital, the progressive left's premier technology and online strategy firm. This firm, which was born out of the Howard Dean campaign, was also responsible for Barack Obama's Web presence. At Blue State Digital, Clay was responsible for developing the organization's brand and building its initial client roster. He also had a hand at building some of the company's early technical tools. Before joining Blue State, Johnson was the lead programmer for Dean for America in 2004, overseeing the development of grassroots tools like GetLocal, DeanLink and Project Commons. Prior to entering politics, Johnson was a technologist at Ask Jeeves (now Ask.com) where he helped to develop the company's Web syndication product. He also started the first Internet Knowledge Exchange, KnowPost.com, and worked as an entrepreneur-in-residence at a Venture Capital firm, but still claims that he learned the most from his first job -- as a waiter at Waffle House in Atlanta, Georgia. by Charles Ess 17 Mar '10

17 Mar '10

Dear AoIR-ists, The organizing committee of CATaC'10 (June 15-18, UBC, Vancouver, Canada) is very pleased to announce that the registration and accommodations pages for CATaC'10 are now available: <http://www.catacconference.org/> In conjunction with CATaC'10, we would also like to call your attention to the call for papers for a volume on New Media and Intercultural Communication, edited by Pauline Hope Cheong, Judith N. Martin & Leah Macfadyen - appended below. Please distribute to appropriate lists and potentially interested colleagues - many thanks! charles ess Department of Information- and Media Studies, Aarhus University Helsingforsgade 14 8200 Århus N. Denmark mail: <imvce(a)hum.au.dk> tel: (+45) 8942 9250 Distinguished Research Professor, Interdisciplinary Studies Drury University, Springfield, Missouri 65802 USA == CALL FOR PAPERS NEW MEDIA AND INTERCULTURAL COMMUNICATION Edited by Pauline Hope Cheong, Judith N. Martin & Leah Macfadyen We are searching for articles to accompany the essays we have already assembled for this volume which presents new scholarship on the intersections of communication, technology and culture. While there has been great deal of quantitative, social science scholarship focused on the features and uses of new communication technologies, there has been less emphasis placed on the role culture plays in new media use, particularly from interpretive and critical research perspectives. This collection of essays attempts to fill this intellectual void. In particular, we encourage submissions from CATaC¹10 presenters and participants whose work directly focuses on culture and its complex interactions with communication more broadly and contemporary Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) that exploit the multiple possibilities of the internet, including internet-enabled mobile devices. Essays included will address topics such as the impact of culture differences on new media use, particularly as it involves new media diffusion, appropriation and the digital divide(s), for instance, how culture influences the performance of gender, sexuality and identity in various social networks, the important implications of culture for distance education pedagogy, and how Web 2.0 imaging and texting interactions foster and/or threaten cultural diversity, privacy and surveillance. We define culture broadly as including gender, age, race/ethnicity, sexual orientation, and other social groupings that may self-identify as cultural groups as well as more traditional definition of culture as nationality. We are looking for articles that address these (and other issues) in a variety of contexts: educational, business and social. The articles can be theoretical as well as empirical (data-based). If you have written an article which you believe might fit our volume please send it to newmediaculture(a)gmail.com. Submission Details Please submit a 500-700 word abstract (including important and initial references) to the editors as an email attachment to newmediaculture(a)gmail.com no later than 1. May, 2010. Authors of accepted abstracts will be notified by 1. July, 2010, and will then be invited to submit a full paper to the editors. Articles will be reviewed by an editorial board and should be no longer 6500 words (including works cited), double spaced, in 12-point font, using APA format of in-text and works cited section. Use footnotes only for comments, not for bibliographical references.
