CFP: Exploring Produsage - Special Issue of NRHM
by Axel Bruns 15 Mar '10

15 Mar '10

Dear colleagues, Jan Schmidt and I are now calling for submissions to this special journal issue: Exploring Produsage A Special Issue of New Review of Hypermedia and Multimedia Call for papers The concept of produsage points to the shift away from conventional producer/consumer relationships, and highlights the more fluid roles of users and contributors within social media environments. Participants in open source projects, in Wikipedia, in YouTube and Second Life are no longer merely consuming or using preproduced material, but neither are they at all times acting as fully self-determined producers of fully formed new works; rather, they occupy a hybrid position as produsers of content. Produsage processes are now evident across a wide range of activities - mainly online, but increasingly also extending to the offline world - from citizen journalism and communal knowledge management through to collaborative artistic activities, from learner-led education models to citizen engagement in political processes. As such models establish themselves, what does an examination through the lens of the produsage framework reveal about their internal operations? How do they affect the existing institutional, industrial, social, and cultural environments within which they operate? How may they be guarded against cooptation and exploitation by corporate interests? What possible futures do they foreshadow? Potential contributions to this special issue could include, but are not limited to, areas such as: * Conceptualising produsage: theoretical frameworks for examining produsage activities, practical examples of produsage projects, ... * Historical and comparative perspectives: produsage and other forms of collaborative and commons-based work, precedents of produsage, ... * Technologies and practices of produsage: collaborative dynamics of leading produsage spaces, impact of the technological foundations of produsage, ... * Empirical perspectives on produsage: case studies of produsage and its effects, ethnographic research into produsage communities, ... * Methodology: research approaches to the study of produsage, tracking and evaluating produser activitities, ... * Critical perspectives: economic, legal, pedagogic, sociological perspectives on produsage, ... For this special issue of NRHM, we invite contributions on these and other topics related to produsage. Full papers should be around 7,000 words; shorter papers (around 3,000 words) for technical notes, industry perspectives or opinion pieces are also welcome. More detailed instructions for authors can be found online: http://www.tandf.co.uk/journals/nrhm. Queries should be directed to the Guest Editors. Software for social media research
by Christine Greenhow 14 Mar '10

14 Mar '10

A colleague and I are looking into software packages to help with social media research. Are you using or do you know of software that might work with analytic data from websites, look at social network membership, do thematic analysis of blogs, profiles or comments? I quickly skimmed the archives but didn't see this question answered. Thanks for any and all recommendations! BBC: The Virtual Revolution
by Richard Forno 14 Mar '10

14 Mar '10

(orig found via IP) The Virtual Revolution: How and when to listen http://www.bbc.co.uk/worldservice/programmes/2010/03/100311_virtual_revolut… Twenty years on from the invention of the World Wide Web, Dr Aleks Krotoski looks at how it is reshaping almost every aspect of our lives. Joined by some of the web's biggest names - including the founders of Facebook, Twitter, Amazon, Apple and Microsoft, and the web's inventor - she explores how far the web has lived up to its early promise. Part One: The Great Levelling In the first in this four-part series, Aleks charts the extraordinary rise of blogs, Wikipedia and YouTube. She also traces an ongoing clash between the freedom the technology offers us, and our innate human desire to control and profit. See The Great Levelling on BBC World television on Saturday 6 March 2010 at 0110GMT (repeated 1510GMT and at 0910GMT and 2210GMT on Sunday 7 March 2010) Part Two: Enemy Of The State Aleks charts how the Web is forging a new brand of politics, both in democracies and authoritarian regimes. With contributions from Al Gore, Martha Lane Fox, Stephen Fry and Bill Gates, the programme explores how interactive, unmediated sites like Twitter and YouTube have encouraged direct action and politicised young people in unprecedented numbers. Yet, at the same time, the Web's openness enables hardline states to spy and censor, and extremists to threaten with networks of hate and crippling cyber attacks. See Enemy Of The State on BBC World television on Saturday 13 March 2010 at 0110GMT (repeated 1510GMT and at 0910GMT and 2210GMT on Sunday 14 March 2010) Part Three: The Cost Of Free Aleks gives the lowdown on how, for better and for worse, commerce has colonised the web - and reveals how web users are paying for what appear to be 'free' sites and services in hidden ways. Joined by some of the most influential business leaders of today's web - including Jeff Bezos (CEO of Amazon), Eric Schmidt (CEO of Google), Chad Hurley (CEO of YouTube) and Bill Gates, the programme traces how business - with varying degrees of success - has attempted to make money on the web. She tells the inside story of the gold rush years of the dotcom bubble, and reveals how retailers such as Amazon learned the lessons. The programme also charts how, out of the ashes, Google forged the business model that has come to dominate today's web, offering a plethora of highly attractive, overtly free web services - including search, maps and video - that are in fact funded through a sophisticated and highly lucrative advertising system which trades on what we users look for. See Enemy Of The State on BBC World television on Saturday 20 March 2010 at 0110GMT (repeated 1510GMT and at 0910GMT and 2210GMT on Sunday 21 March 2010) Part Four: Homo Interneticus? Part Four will be available to listen on BBC World Service radio from 15 March 2010 Dr Aleks Krotoski concludes her investigation of how the World Wide Web is transforming almost every aspect of our lives. Joined by Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg, Bill Gates, Al Gore and the neuroscientist Susan Greenfield, the programme examines the popularity of social networks such as Facebook and asks how they are changing our relationships. And, in a ground-breaking test at University College London, Aleks investigates how the Web may be distracting and overloading our brains. See Enemy Of The State on BBC World television on Saturday 27 March 2010 at 0110GMT (repeated 1510GMT and at 0910GMT and 2210GMT on Sunday 28 March 2010) http://www.bbc.co.uk/worldservice/programmes/2010/03/100311_virtual_revolut…

Thierry, Could you please clarify something for me? There seems to be a contradiction within the CfP. In the body of the text the proposal deadline is given as "invited to submit on or before February 13, 2010", however the table of deadlines gives the proposal submission date as "April 13, 2010: Proposal Submission Deadline". I'd like to know which is correct. Thank you. The Big Gaydar Workshop
by Sharif Mowlabocus 12 Mar '10

12 Mar '10

Dear All Please find details below of workshop that Ben Light and I are organising. The event is going to be held at the University of Sussex and is on May 28th. Would be great to have AoIR members at the event! Best wishes Sharif Mowlabocus The Big Gaydar Workshop: Connections, Tensions and Digital Interventions 28th May 2010, University of Sussex Call for Papers, Interest & Participation Gaydar is ten years old. In the decade it has been operating, the website has survived the bursting of the dotcom bubble, the rise of competitor services and the evolution of 2.0 social networking practices. Yet Gaydar continues to be the number one gay male dating site in Britain and the brand now extends beyond the web. Gaydar is a radio station, a brand, a sponsor of international gay events, a charity donor, a marketing tool and part of a company that also owns two commercial venues, in the heart of London’s gay district. Gaydar is …? As befits a phenomenon of this size, Gaydar encounters contradictions that reflect the tensions operating in contemporary gay male subculture. It is both a site for HIV prevention work and a space in which barebackers can find one another. It funds gay Pride events, yet is often criticised for ignoring the margins of the LGBT community. It provides opportunities for queer youth to explore their sexual identities while also interpolating gay men into a dizzying array of categories. It allows users to advertise themselves to one another, and mines that information for financial gain. It is also a digital environment firmly rooted in the material realities and the corporeal pleasures of the physical world. The big Gaydar workshop Organised in conjunction with the University of Salford, this one-day multidisciplinary workshop is hosted by the Centre for Material Digital Culture at the University of Sussex and will take place on 28th May 2010. Departing from the standard conference format, the organisers are keen to organise the day around a series of round-table discussions that explore different facets of and interactions with Gaydar. The topic of these discussions is currently open and at this stage we welcome proposals and suggestions from interested individuals, groups and organisations. Participation Do you work with, or find work through Gaydar? Have you used Gaydar for political or activist reasons? Do you use Gaydar for professional or personal motives? Do you have an opinion about Gaydar? We are interested in hearing from you! Each roundtable discussion will open with between one and three short positioning papers (5 minutes max). Following these brief presentations, the discussion will be opened up to the floor for response and further input. The organisers are keen to employ a range of techniques to ensure that all those who wish to speak get a chance to do so, and those preferring other forms of communication (Twitter, blogging etc) can exploit these technologies. We strongly encourage collaborative work within and across industries, disciplines and sectors and seek input from academic and non-academic experts alike. Interventions and positioning papers can take a variety of forms and should be aimed at opening up the discussion. The details Registration costs £10 (payable in advance) and refreshments will be provided. Please note that places are strictly limited and will, in the first instance, be allocated to those offering discussion topics and positioning papers. If you have a proposal for a discussion topic, or would like to discuss the workshop, and your potential involvement in it, please send an email (including your name, affiliation and any proposal) to the organisers. Timetable for application · Expression of interest by : 2nd April 2010 · Closing date for positioning papers: 30th April 2010 · Workshop date: 28th May 2010 Organisers Professor Ben Light School of Media, Music & Performance University of Salford b.light(a)salford.ac.uk Dr Sharif Mowlabocus School of Media, Film and Music University of Sussex s.j.mowlabocus(a)sussex.ac.uk
