New Media in Small Group Communication Class
by Gordon Carlson 11 Mar '10

11 Mar '10

Hi All, I will be teaching a 300 level course in Small Group Communication/Team Building next fall. This year they really want a New Media focus. I imagine the course will see small groups/teams of students conducting term-long projects during which they produce a product or system (like put on an event and advertise it, raise money for a cause, etc...). I would very much welcome suggestions for general ideas for a new media angle (using social media, getting PR attention online, etc...) or specific readings/experiences you recommend. Thanks very much in advance for your feedback and let me know if you have questions or ideas. I will gladly share a summary of your comments with the list for the benefit of others. Feel free to respond off list. Thanks, Gordon Carlson

Nature Methods | Editorial > The Scientist And The Smartphone
by gerrymck 11 Mar '10

11 Mar '10

Nature Methods 7, 87 (2010) / doi:10.1038/nmeth0210-87 / Abstract > Mobile computing platforms such as the iPhone are beginning to make inroads into the laboratory—serious prospect or fairy tale? [snip] ... [The] metamorphosis of the cell phone into a mobile computing platform with voice capabilities is epitomized by the iPhone—one of a new breed of smartphone that is not only popular among the general public but seemingly ubiquitous among scientists. [snip] With a seemingly unlimited number of apps available, the iPhone can be quite a handy tool. An increasing number of apps are targeted to scientists, and lists of must-have apps for researchers have proliferated. There are apps to calculate how to prepare solutions, view restriction enzyme information, search online databases for papers and even store downloaded papers. Well-known product vendors for biological research are also beginning to release laboratory apps for the iPhone. Promega has an app with product information, tutorials, protocols and unit conversion calculators, and Bio-Rad has a quantitative PCR app. [snip] But will such devices be used in wet-lab procedures? The lab environment can be a dangerous place for a high-tech personal cell phone, and who wants to keep removing their gloves every time they go to a new step in a protocol? Although awkward, an easily removable skin would help alleviate some of these concerns. A killer laboratory app might convince at least some principal investigators to spring for dedicated devices for the lab. It may not be long before such a killer app makes an appearance. The barcode scanning ability of the autofocus camera on new devices suggests some possibilities. This is the basis of a popular app that is remarkably handy for checking prices when, for example, you are out shopping for a new HDTV. Barcode scanning combined with printing and database querying capabilities could turn the device into a powerful laboratory information management tool for samples and reagents. The camera combined with text recognition could be used to access the material safety data sheet for any chemical. Barcodes in scientific publications could direct readers to relevant online information or raw scientific data. The ability to interface with other devices using different wireless protocols could be used for remote sensing or instrument control. The camera can even potentially be used for direct data acquisition. Two winners of the 2009 Vodafone Wireless Innovation Project were compact microscopes that interface with a cell-phone camera. [snip] But for the present, the most immediate potential for these devices is in providing a painless way for researchers to keep up with their reading wherever they happen to be. Mass media publishers have embraced the iPhone for delivering their content, ... . But the situation is changing. Several publishers, including Nature Publishing Group, have apps that will go live any day. The nature.com app will let you read full-text articles, view full-size figures and save references. [snip] We would like to hear from you, our readers, what you use your iPhone or other smartphone for. Does it have a place in the lab? What is the must-have app you are looking for? One way or another, mobile computers have the potential to play a substantial role in the laboratory of the future. Just maybe, scientists and their mobile devices can live happily ever after. CALL FOR CHAPTER PROPOSALS: Virtual Community Participation and Motivation: Cross-Disciplinary Theories
by NABETH Thierry 09 Mar '10

09 Mar '10

Dear All, This is a call for chapter proposal that I post on the behalf of Dr. Honglei Li Swansea University, United Kingdom. Best regards, Thierry Thierry Nabeth Senior Research Fellow, INSEAD http://www.calt.insead.edu/?thierry.nabeth ======================================================================== ========= CALL FOR CHAPTER PROPOSALS Extended Proposal Submission Deadline: April 13, 2010 Virtual Community Participation and Motivation: Cross-Disciplinary Theories A book edited by Dr. Honglei Li Swansea University, United Kingdom To be published by IGI Global: http://www.igi-global.com/requests/details.asp?ID=762 Introduction This book intends to give a comprehensive view on virtual community participation. With the power to gather people with similar interests together, virtual communities have gained attention by not only practitioners, but researchers, as well. Various studies have been done to explore why people participate in virtual communities since it is only after aggregating a certain amount of members that a virtual community can be viable. Virtual community participation refers to those behaviours in which members mainly participate. Basically, past researchers have found two types of behaviours: lurking and active participation. Although many studies discussed the motivations to participate in virtual communities, including gift economy, pursuit of power, sense of belonging, sense of inclusion, relationship building, and so forth, none of them have given a clear and comprehensive framework on the reasons for virtual community participation. As the field is now in a position to call for a synthesis publication to integrate all aspects of virtual community participation theories, it's important to edit a book to give both researchers and general virtual community practitioner the theoretical guidelines. This book will bring together the issues that managers, practitioners, and researchers must consider when planning, implementing, and managing members in virtual communities. Objective of the Book The book gives in-depth coverage of state-of-the-art research on virtual community participation. It first covers the concept of virtual community participation, followed by several streams of virtual community participation theories. It will be written for professionals, researchers, practitioners, and designers who want to improve their understanding of the strategic role of virtual community participation within the development of digital communication. Target Audience This book appeals to those interested not only in virtual communities, but also in virtual worlds, virtual teams, and even online shopping. Virtual community researchers, as well as researchers from diverse fields--computer science, information systems, psychology, sociology, and telecommunications--will find valuable motivation theories discussed in this book. But this book appeals to more than just researchers. Practitioners and managers looking to organize virtual communities efficiently and effectively will also benefit from the case discussions, empirical studies, and data analysis. In addition, upper-level and graduate-level students will find this research useful in their course work and research. Finally, this book will be a welcome addition to academic libraries' research collections. Recommended topics include, but are not limited to, the following: --Virtual community participation behavior definition --Discussion of various virtual community behaviors --The interpersonal relationship reason of virtual community participation --The social capital perspective of virtual community participation --The attachment of virtual community participation --The belonging or inclusion perspective of participation -- Gift economy perspective of virtual community participation --Frameworks to explain virtual community participation --Behavior theories --Social psychological perspective of virtual community participation --The power side of virtual community participation --Knowledge management motivation to participation --The communicational perspective to participate --The psychological perspective to participate --The process virtualization perspective to participate Submission Procedure Researchers and practitioners are invited to submit on or before February 13, 2010, a 2-3 page chapter proposal clearly explaining the mission and concerns of his or her proposed chapter. Authors of accepted proposals will be notified by February 28, 2010 about the status of their proposals and sent chapter guidelines. Full chapters are expected to be submitted by April 13, 2010. All submitted chapters will be reviewed on a double-blind review basis. Contributors may also be requested to serve as reviewers for this project. Additional information about this can be found at: http://www.igi-global.com/requests/details.asp?ID=762 . Publisher This book is scheduled to be published by IGI Global (formerly Idea Group Inc.), publisher of the "Information Science Reference" (formerly Idea Group Reference), "Medical Information Science Reference," "Business Science Reference," and "Engineering Science Reference" imprints. For additional information regarding the publisher, please visit www.igi-global.com . This publication is anticipated to be released in 2010. Important Dates April 13, 2010: Proposal Submission Deadline May 28, 2010: Notification of Acceptance July 13, 2010: Full Chapter Submission August 30, 2010: Review Results Returned September 13, 2010: Final Chapter Submission September 30, 2010: Final Deadline Editorial Advisory Board Members: TBA Inquiries and submissions should be forwarded electronically (Word document) to: Dr. Honglei Li School of Business & Economics Swansea University Singleton Park, Swansea, SA2 8PP United Kingdom Tel.: +44 (0) 1792295680 * Fax: +44 (0) 1792295626 E-mail: hongleili(a)gmail.com or H.Li(a)swansea.ac.uk

Call for Papers: New Groups and New Methods? The Ethnography and Qualitative Research of Online Groups
by Maurizio 09 Mar '10

09 Mar '10

Apologies for Cross-Posting ERQ Call for Papers: New Groups and New Methods? The Ethnography and Qualitative Research of Online Groups Special Issue (volume 4, number 2, 2011) of “Etnografia e Ricerca Qualitativa” (Ethnography and Qualitative Research) Edited By: Stefano De Paoli & Maurizio Teli Online groups, also called "virtual worlds", "virtual communities", or “digital collectives”, are those social groups whose members’ interactions are mediated primarily by the Internet. Participation in these groups has a variety of purposes and takes place via a variety of technological platforms. These include, for instance, platforms for social networking (such as Facebook, Second Life and social networks in general), platforms that have a productive purpose for participants (such as projects for the development of Free and Open Source Software), or platforms whose goal is to provide entertainment or a pastime for users (for instance Multiplayer Online Games such as the Massive Multiplayer Online Games or Online Poker). Nowadays, the social relevance of this phenomenon has become quite clear in several areas. For example, social networks like Facebook or MySpace now count millions of users that interact online, with a variety of goals, practices and tools (Beer, 2008). The proliferation of socio-technical phenomena such as Wikipedia, Creative Commons and Free and Open Source Software has changed some of the traditional assumptions about organizational hierarchies and paid labour (Kelty, 2008). Or again, Online Games' virtual economies are tied to real economies, in ways that challenge traditional assumptions about property (Castronova, 2005). Social, cultural, economic, and technological dimensions are, therefore, closely intertwined in the phenomenon of Online Groups. In this special issue (volume 4, number 2, 2011) of “Etnografia e Ricerca Qualitativa” (Ethnography and Qualitative Research) we are looking for contributions with a strong empirical bias that can tackle this hybrid complexity and that specifically offer reflections and practical experiences for a discussion on the theoretical and methodological dimensions of the phenomenon. This involves reflecting on one or more of the following topics: Firstly, some reflections might focus on the theoretical dimension. Often the literature, in both the social sciences and economics, for example Benkler’s (2006) or von Hippel’s (2004) works, has associated the birth and proliferation of online groups with a process of democratization and the construction of a new democratic balance of power and knowledge. (Consider the case of Free and Open Source Software or the advent of Web 2.0 and User Generated Content.) However, this literature is often linked with individualistic approaches, the methodological dimension of which does not focus on the “fine grain” of social practices and on the power relationships these practices might imply. One of the goals of this special issue is therefore to stimulate a debate on how ethnographic or qualitative research in general can help to balance this optimistic view, in which "online" is seen as a place of pure democracy. Secondly, the research on online group interactions requires a discussion of and reflection on the assumptions of traditional qualitative and ethnographic research. Indeed, the researcher herself is required to take part in online interactions and to use the Internet to conduct the research. This consideration illustrates that there is an inherent reflexive element: the researcher studies a phenomenon that she is also contributing to identify. It is therefore important for researchers to reflect on the use in research of the same technologies and platforms used for online interactions. This includes, for instance, tools for collecting qualitative data, for analyzing data and also for the communication/dissemination of research results. Examples could be: the use of blogs or wikis as tools to keep and organize field notes or even to build a relationship with participants in the online groups themselves; the use of online resources (such as software tools) that can be used for data collection and analysis, for example extensions for the Firefox browser or web-based CAQDAS software; and the use of blogs, wikis and other platforms to disseminate research results, in this way contributing to the construction of online interactions. Finally, ethnographic and qualitative online research requires specific reflections on the ethical aspects of the research. For instance, the availability of archived material in a space that is neither public nor private, according to classical categories in the ethics of research, and whose authors are not always reachable, poses challenging problems. Indeed, often the user communications and interactions are public, in the sense that they are easily accessible by almost anyone through an Internet connection. This type of “sharing in a limited context” by users raises ethical questions for researchers, as the users' original purpose was not to provide “data” for researchers (Bakardjeva and Feenberg, 2001). Therefore, an approach that takes the situation into account should be used when discussing the status of public/private information in relation to Internet conversations and interactions (Teli, Pisanu, Hakken, 2007). In conclusion, we invite empirically grounded research papers that address one or more of the dimensions outlined above, but which may also expand them and include other aspects. Contributions might include (but are not restricted to): The ethnography and qualitative research of online groups: social networks, online games, Wikipedia, etc. The construction of groups: the role of the researcher and qualitative research Ethnographic and qualitative approaches to power and to online data Power and knowledge: digital archives, avatars Your experiences with using online technologies for the collection and analysis of qualitative data The ethics of qualitative research on online groups References Beer, D. post-doc position at Orange Labs, Paris
by Thomas Couronné 09 Mar '10

09 Mar '10

Hi Air-L, Please find here a 1 year PostDoc proposal, open at Orange Lab in Paris, for french speaking people.

Inclusion
by Steven Clift 08 Mar '10

08 Mar '10

I'd like to compare notes with researchers exploring the use of social media/online forums in lower income/diverse/high immigrant neighborhoods. E-Democracy.org has some new Ford Foundation funding to deepen our current efforts in Cedar Riverside in Minneapolis (large East African population) and Frogtown in St. Paul (large SE Asian, and African-American communities): http://e-democracy.org/inclusion Our goal is the create an integrative online experience that reflects the diversity of the area both in terms of registrants and with shared content. Part one in terms of registration, aided by in-person outreach (documented extensively on our blog - see link just above) happened over the previous year. Part two includes activities of our part-time "Community Outreach and Information Leaders" that I just hired to work with community groups and participants to spur diverse exchange. We use a mix of e-mail/web with forums piped into Facebook Fan pages and Twitter as well. Who has been active in this niche - either neighborhood activities online in general (I know about Keith Hampton's good work) or more specifically in working with content/exchange online for inclusion. (Going well beyond the computer training and access paradigm.) I am interested in both researchers and projects you know about. Please also reply to clift(a)e-democracy.org so I don't miss your reply. Cheers, Steven Clift E-Democracy.org P.S. We do have some coding projects exploring the next generation of nearest neighbor connections online emerging: http://e-democracy.org/neighborly - Also note http://pages.e-democracy.org/Block_activities
