sources for content analysis for articulations of privacy concerns
by Seda Guerses 03 Mar '10

03 Mar '10

i am looking for related work for a chapter of my thesis. in previously published work we used thematic analysis to study how privacy concerns with respect to web based social networks are articulated in the news and in blogs. in the chapter i would like to take a step back and talk about related work on analysis of community reporting, analysis of blogosphere themes or analysis of mentions of a specific theme across the web. references to advantages and disadvantages of doing such web based studies would also be interesting. i hope the question is specific enough. thank you, s. Pro-ana websites research
by Antonio A. Casilli 03 Mar '10

03 Mar '10

Hi all, As part of a research project at the EHESS (School for Advanced Studies in Social Sciences, Paris), my team and I are running a study on users of pro-ana / pro-mia websites in France and UK. The approach mainly brings together social network analysis and qualitative fieldworks. We would love to hear from people working on pro-ana blogs, forums and SNS targeting teenagers and young adults. Ethical implications are particularly challenging at this stage of our project, as they overcome the domain of ED-related online communities. Parental consent for younger respondents, for instance, seems to represent a major setback given the biases it might introduce in sample recruitment. Potential consequences for participants (being rushed to out their pro-ED identity to their parents if they want to take part in the study) should also be addressed. If, in the course of your own resarch, you have faced the same issues, how did you deal with them? Cheers for now, Antonio -- Antonio A. [AIR-L] Eating Behaviors of World of Warcraft Players
by Natalie DeWitt 02 Mar '10

02 Mar '10

--------------Please pass this study onto anyone whom you think may be interested in participation, and feel free to email me with any questions you might have. Thank you!----------------- Greetings, We would like to ask for your participation in our survey investigating food related behaviors and participation in virtual worlds, specifically World of Warcraft. You may participate in the survey via the following link. The survey should take approximately 15 minutes to complete. http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/wowfoodstudy3 As virtual worlds continue to grow in popularity as both locations for personal enjoyment and professional conduct, it is increasingly important for virtual world researchers and designers to better understand the practices of virtual world users. Much attention has been focused on people who play “video games” and their perceived eating habits and attitudes towards food, but little research has been conducted to shed light on how participation in a virtual world can affect food related behaviors. Please feel free to pass the link to the survey to anyone you think might be interested in participating in the study. If you have any questions regarding this study, please feel free to contact us via the email addresses provided. Future Internet and Society: Complex Networks Perspective
by jeremy hunsinger 02 Mar '10

02 Mar '10

ESF-COST High-Level Research Conference: Future Internet and Society: Complex Networks Perspective Acquafredda di Maratea, Italy, 2-7 October 2010 Closing date for applications: 1 June 2010 More information: www.esf.org/conferences/10341<http://www.esf.org/conferences/10341> The digital revolution and the advent of the Internet are transforming the way we work, how we spend our free time. These phenomena are also changing how we communicate with each other and the way in which we establish and maintain our social relations. The relationship between Internet and society is complex and bidirectional, leading to a co-evolution of the two systems. In fact, the Internet exists because humans need networking and the Internet evolution is ultimately driven by our ever-increasing use of it. The complexity of the current Internet structure and its future developments cannot be understood without taking a full multi-disciplinary approach. Such an approach must necessarily be based on the science of complex systems, and in particular complex network theory. It must also depend on social sciences and humanities to elucidate the underpinnings of the Internet at a societal and economic level. This conference will bring together experts in Information and Communication Technologies (ICT), social scientists, as well as experts in the area of complex systems They will assess the state-of-the-art, identify new trends and envision future developments in the intertwined domains of future Internet and society. Topics that will be covered in the conference include: - Internet topology and modelling - Complex techno-social networks - Modelling of collective social behaviour - Social and human dynamics - Spreading and epidemics in techno-social systems - Virtual social systems - Co-evolution of Internet and society - Internet as a socio-economical system - Mobile social networks - Internet enabled applications and business - Future Internet as a techno-social system. We welcome top-level presentations on the most recent results in analysis and modelling, from the point of view of complex systems and other techno-social issues. jeremy hunsinger Center for Digital Discourse and Culture Virginia Tech Information Ethics Fellow, Center for Information Policy Research, School of Information Studies, University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee (www.cipr.uwm.edu) () ascii ribbon campaign - against html mail /\ - against microsoft attachments http://www.aoir.org The Association of Internet Researchers http://www.stswiki.org/ stswiki http://transdisciplinarystudies.tmttlt.com/ Transdisciplinary Studies:the book series

UEL Public Lecture Series: Terri Senft on Teen Sexual Display on the Internet
by Theresa Senft 01 Mar '10

01 Mar '10

--PLEASE PASS ON TO INTERESTED PARTIES-- Hello, friends in London! I wanted to invite folks to join me next Tuesday at the University of East London Public Lecture Series, where I am giving a talk about--among other thing-- half-naked young girls on the internet. Because it's the sort of conversation that's best had in the presence of people under the age of 45, I hope students especially come for the lecture and join in the dialogue afterwards. (I could probably also visit a class or two briefly to talk, if that¹s of interest to anyone; this is a topic I never seem to lose interest in...) Here are some details about the lecture: PUBLIC LECTURE SERIES TITLE: ³From Personal Property to Speaking Subjects: Youth, Gender, and the Right to Credit in an Attention Economy.² SPEAKER: Dr. Theresa Senft, Senior Lecturer, Media Studies, UEL Date: Tuesday 9 March 2010 Time: 17:30 Venue: West Building G.02 (next to Oscars) University of East London, Docklands Campus Transport: Cyprus DLR Here is a quick summary: ³From Personal Property to Speaking Subjects: Youth, Gender, and the Right to Credit in an Attention Economy.² This talk engages with the politics of female sexual self-display over the Internet, especially focusing on teens in America and the U.K. I begin by discussing a recent U.S. law suit filed by two Indiana teens against their high school principal after he punished them for posting risqué photos in a private section of their MySpace accounts. Echoing current wisdom that there is never a guarantee of privacy on the Internet, the American Civil Liberties Union (representing the girls) has chosen to frame their activities as free-speech acts, arguing that these teens were expressing themselves to themselves in two sorts of bedrooms: their real-life one, and their online one. In this talk, I frame the case in terms of my recent work on a phenomenon I call ³micro-celebrity²: a new way to perform the self that combines the visual techniques of corporate branding with the distribution technologies of the Internet. I am particularly interested in how sexism and ageism converge within micro-celebrity¹s overwhelming investment in the so-called attention economies of the Web.¹ This speech returns to a question I raised in my book Camgirls: ³Why are women continually encouraged to express themselves in media through confession, celebrity and sexual display, yet punished with conservative censure and backlash when their representation becomes too much¹ to handle?² Dr. Theresa Senft is interested in how the Internet has been changing our notions of the public, the private and the pornographic in contemporary society. For her most recent book, Camgirls: Celebrity & Community in the Age of Social Networks, Terri ran a webcam out of her own home for a year and charted her experiences. Other books by Terri include History of the Internet, 1843-Present (co-author) and a special issue of Women & Performance devoted to sexuality & cyberspace (co-editor.) Terri's work has been published in The New York Times, she has appeared on National Public Radio (U.S.), and in the documentary Webcam Girls. ---------------- Note: this lecture will be an updated and revised-for-the-UK version of something I did earlier at Harvard last year. It will also tangentially addresses teen ³sexting,² a practice that is providing the foundation for a moral panic in the U.S. right now. The URL for that talk (if you want to read, or assign to students, or whatever), is: http://tsenft.livejournal.com/405387.html#cutid1 Feel free to contact me with any questions about the lecture, thoughts on the topic, or (especially) links to other work being done in this area, by you or anyone else you know. I'm at t.senft(a)uel.ac.uk Many thanks! -- Dr. Theresa M. Publication Venue?
by Ted Coopman 01 Mar '10

01 Mar '10

All, I have a grande size manuscript and I am looking for a publication venue. The text alone clocks in at a little under 10K words (about 11K+ for references, abstract, etc.). The issue is that it is qualitative research based on a new theory with large, interlocking, and reinforcing data sets. So I have to make the case for the theory, method, and report and contextualize the findings. I was looking at IJOC, but they have a 9000 word limit for everything (references, text, abstract, etc.). I have already cut it down from chapter size in my diss. I just do not know if I can make my case if I whack another 2K words. It's applying my theory of dissentworks to an examination of the global Indymedia network. Any suggestions for possible journals would be greatly appreciated. -TED -- Ted M. Coopman Ph.D. Lecturer Department of Communication Studies Department of Television, Radio, Film, & Theatre San Jose State University
