DART-Europe is a partnership of research libraries and library consortia who are working together to improve global access to European research theses. DART-Europe is endorsed by LIBER (Ligue des Bibliothèques Européennes de Recherche), and it is the European Working Group of the Networked Digital Library of Theses and Dissertations (NDLTD). The DART-Europe partners help to provide researchers with a single European Portal for the discovery of Electronic Theses and Dissertations (ETDs), and they participate in advocacy to influence future European e-theses developments. DART-Europe offers partners a European networking forum on ETD issues, and may provide the opportunity to submit collaborative funding applications to achieve DART-Europe's vision for ETDs. DART-Europe is resourced through partner contributions. Partners support the following principles: 1.DART-Europe will encourage the creation, discovery and use of European e-theses, and will maintain a central Portal for e-thesis aggregation and access. 2.European libraries and consortia are invited to contribute metadata to the DART-Europe Portal. Contributors will determine the terms and conditions under which their metadata are contributed. 3.DART-Europe welcomes the contribution by partners of resources to support the management, discovery, usability and preservation of e-theses, and to further the aims and objectives of DART-Europe. 4.Partners will designate one representative to act as a contact for DART-Europe, and will nominate at least one representative to participate in the DART-Europe email lists. 5.DART-Europe welcomes offers from partners to host DART-Europe Project Board meetings, as occasion demands. 6.Partners will help to secure DART-Europe's status as an international network of excellence in information, expertise and resources relating to ETDs. 7.DART-Europe will be administered by UCL (University College London) and governed by a Board consisting of representatives of partner organisations. The constitution and Terms of Reference of the governing Board will be determined and from time to time reviewed by the Board. CALL FOR PAPERS. The GLOBAL FUSION 2010 Media & Communication Conference will be held at Texas A&M University, College Station, Texas, USA, October 22-24, 2010. This year’s conference theme is “Sustenance and Globalization.” We consider the concept of culture in relation to the nature of global communication processes. Those interested in the role of the print, electronic, and digital media might look at their role in sustaining and modifying cultures. For those interested in non-mediated communication, a focus could be brought to bear on the ways in which folklore, traditional cultural practices, and ecology can act to sustain and empower cultures.. Researchers exploring the development perspective on international communication might consider addressing community building, sustainability, development, and the roles of communication in changing and sustaining cultures, polities, and societies. Among many other possibilities, this theme also allows for an exploration of the ways in which communication technologies, both as software and hardware, can sustain and/or undermine cultures and environments. Submissions on this theme are preferred, but proposals for conference panels and papers may be on any topic related to global media and international communication. Panel and individual paper proposals may be submitted in the form of abstracts of 200-250 words, in MS Word or rich text format. Paper abstracts should be submitted anonymously, without the name or other identifying information about the author in the document. The Global Fusion conference offers a graduate student competition. Papers submitted for the graduate student paper competition should be full length (about 25 pages in APA format), and clearly marked on the title page as being a submission for the competition. The purpose of the Global Fusion conference series is to promote academic excellence in global media and international communication studies.. These conferences bring together scholars and professionals interested in media and communication in global contexts. The conference series is sponsored by a consortium of schools including Texas A&M University, the University of Texas at Austin, Ohio University, Temple University and Southern Illinois University. Creative, useful, innovative way of using Facebook: A local professional soccer player (next year will be MLS) used his Facebook Wall to have an 'auction' among his 700+ 'friends' (mostly fans I suspect) of various official game shirts (many signed) and other auction items like "2 hours doing anything in town with Defender Cameron Knowles - play on the pitch, have a beer, anything." The auction winners then had to donate said winning bids amount to the Red Cross Haiti Relief Fund, and bring receipt to meetup at pizza spot to get their auction item. http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=2624276&id=2514218 I thought it was a very innovative, immediate way for an individual in a fairly bright spotlight (the Timbers soccer club play in a stadium with game attendance around 10,000+) to use online social media to make an immediate impact.

Dear AoIRs ~ **Sorry for any potential cross-posting** I hope your semester is going as smooth as it can be! I write this email to request your help as paper reviewers for the annual meeting of the AEJMC (CTEC Division) in Denver. We expect a large turnout of submissions for the 2010 AEJMC conference in Denver. Because each submission is reviewed, ranked and rated by several judges, we need your assistance in the selection process. Reviews will take place in April so at this point I just need to confirm whether you are willing to review for CTEC. All divisions of AEJMC will be using the All Academic online system. Reviewer accounts will need to be created in mid-March and research papers will be submitted by Thursday, April 1. As a reviewer you will be asked to log onto the system, download the papers, and post the review forms between April 2 and May 1. Depending on the number of submissions and the number of reviewers, we will try to assign no more than three or four papers to each reviewer. Over 80 percent of respondents to the annual ECAR study of undergraduate students report owning laptops, yet usage of expensive public computer labs remains high. Although computer labs might still be necessary, one can’t help but feel that traditional labs are anachronistic in a world of wireless connectivity, iPods, and smart phones. Labs are expensive to equip, staff, and maintain, and often the layout maximizes the amount of equipment that can be put into a given space rather than the creation of a comfortable or stimulating learning environment. Rather than predicting an entirely new model, this presentation will focus on low-cost changes that can be made to the design, layout, and operation of existing computer labs to meet both the changing needs of students and the necessities of the economic recession. CALL FOR PAPERS Feminism and HCI: A Special Issue of Interacting with Computers (https://sites.google.com/site/feminismandhci/home) Special Issue Editors: Shaowen Bardzell (Indiana University School of Informatics and Computing) and Elizabeth F. Churchill (Yahoo! Research) Portrayals of feminism, in politics, the media, and even in Human Computer Interaction (HCI) conferences, suggest that this household word is not always well understood. Academically, feminism is a subdomain of critical theory that integrates a collection of theories, analytical and interpretative methodologies, ethical values, and political positions, which have evolved over the past two centuries. In recent years, HCI as a research discipline has expanded beyond preoccupations with how efficiently a system performs or how 'easy' it is to use; HCI researchers and practitioners are increasingly concerned with culture, society, and the experiential qualities of computing. HCI as a discipline stands to benefit from a deeper engagement with feminist perspectives on the design, promotion, adoption and adaptation of interactive, computer-based technologies. Feminist theories and concepts offer reflective considerations of dominant and alternative epistemologies; offer ways to understand the constitution of gender and the self in everyday life; give us perspectives through which to investigate the indirect effects of design; consider emotional landscapes in design, including pleasure, desire, attraction, sentiment, anger, fear and resistance; address issues of power and agency in how technologies are adopted by us or imposed upon us, including engagement with issues such as privacy, surveillance and gaze; study the adoption and adaptation of technologies in leisure activities such as crafts; consider issues in designing for homes, critically addressing the notion of "home" itself; and address broader issues such as embodiment, memory and performance. The “Feminism and HCI: New Perspectives” Special Issue seeks to provide a forum for scholarly contributions and applications of feminism to the discipline of HCI. Though the topic of feminism has many inputs and applications, we confine our focus to the interaction design implications of this problem space. Specifically, we are concerned with the design and evaluation of interactive systems that are imbued with sensitivity to the central commitments of feminism—agency, fulfillment, identity and the self, equity, empowerment, diversity, and social justice. We also seek to improve our understanding of how gender identities and relations shape both the use of interactive technologies and their design. Additionally, feminist HCI entails critical perspectives that could help reveal unspoken values within HCI’s dominant research and design paradigms, and underpin the development of new approaches, methods and design variations. We see the contribution of feminist theories and methods to HCI in the following ways and encourage submissions that address the following types of issues: · Fundamental and theoretical: how feminism critiques core operational concepts, assumptions, and epistemologies of the field, and what opportunities this critique opens up for the future · Methodological considerations: how feminism interacts with user research, iterative design, evaluation methodologies · User considerations: updating the notion of “the user” to reflect gender in a way that noticeably and directly affects design · Artifact considerations: critically examining how designs configure users’ femininity and masculinity—and what implications they bear for future design work · Your experiences: To what extent do you perceive feminist perspectives already informing your work in HCI? Do you sense that feminist perspectives are informing others’ work in the field? What current issues in HCI might benefit from the application of feminist perspectives? All submissions need to be based on original research and will be subject to the full review process of Interacting with Computers.
